Sometimes, but not through one universal Android-for-Mac companion app. “Desktop companion app” can mean a phone-to-computer desktop mode, wireless sharing, USB file transfer, or backup and migration. Each has different platform support. Samsung describes DeX as a PC-like Android experience and mentions macOS in general product information, but that wording does not confirm that every Galaxy device, macOS release, or DeX connection method works today. Google’s documented Quick Share computer app is for Windows, while USB transfer and Samsung Smart Switch provide practical Mac workflows for files and backups.
The reliable approach is to start with the task you need, then verify the exact Android model, software version, Mac version and connection method. Support for one feature does not prove support for another.
What “Android desktop companion app” can mean
People use the phrase for several unrelated functions. A desktop-mode product may put a phone’s apps on a larger display. A sharing utility may send photos and documents between devices. A transfer tool may expose the phone’s storage over USB. A migration utility may create a backup or move data to a replacement phone. These functions use different protocols and have different Mac support.

- Nearby sharing: wireless transfer between Android and a computer, such as Quick Share.
- USB file transfer: copying files through Android’s MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) connection.
- Backup and migration: saving phone data to a Mac or moving it to another Galaxy device with Smart Switch.
None of these categories should be treated as proof that Android apps run natively in ordinary macOS windows. File transfer and backup move data; they do not turn the Mac into an Android application runtime.

Does Samsung DeX work with a Mac?
Samsung’s developer page says: “Samsung DeX Mode allows your device to cast a PC-like experience to the big screen with the same apps you use on your phone every day.” That is a description of the DeX concept, not a promise that every current Galaxy phone can use every DeX route with every Mac.
The same information includes macOS in a general description, while its requirements are tied to particular devices and DeX modes. Some requirements shown there are legacy or mode-specific. A phone may support DeX on an external monitor but not a computer-hosted DeX application, or it may require a particular USB-C connection, wireless-display capability or version of Samsung software.
How to check DeX before buying or setting it up
- Identify the exact Galaxy phone or tablet model, including regional model variation if relevant.
- Install the latest available Android and Samsung system updates for that device.
- On Samsung’s current support or developer pages, check the model’s supported DeX modes rather than relying on the word “DeX” alone.
- Confirm whether the intended route is an external monitor, a television, a USB connection to a computer, or a wireless display. These are separate compatibility paths.
- Check the Mac’s current macOS version and whether Samsung lists it for the specific DeX software or connection method.
- Test with the intended cable, dock or network before moving important work to the setup.
If Samsung does not list the exact combination of device, mode and macOS version, treat DeX-on-Mac as unconfirmed. A general macOS mention is insufficient evidence for a purchasing or deployment decision.
Does Quick Share work on macOS?
Google’s official Quick Share computer-app instructions describe installation on Windows, not macOS. The documented computer requirements include Windows 10 64-bit and later; Windows 11 and later are specified for ARM-based PCs. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are required, and Android 6 or later includes Quick Share on the phone side.

That documentation does not establish a supported Mac desktop app. Do not infer Mac support from the fact that an Android phone has Quick Share, and do not assume that a Windows installer will run through an unofficial compatibility layer. If your destination is a Mac, use a documented USB workflow or another transfer method that explicitly supports macOS.
What this means in practice
- Android-to-Windows Quick Share support does not equal Android-to-Mac Quick Share support.
- The phone’s Android version is only one part of compatibility; the computer application and operating system must also be supported.
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth requirements apply to the documented Windows computer workflow, not as evidence that a Mac client exists.
How to transfer Android files to a Mac over USB
USB is the most clearly documented Mac path for ordinary files. Motorola’s support instructions use Android File Transfer on Mac. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance covers the same underlying MTP connection and explains what to do when the computer does not recognize the phone.
Before connecting
- Use a USB cable with the correct connectors for both devices and with data-transfer capability. A charging-only cable cannot expose the phone’s files.
- Unlock the Android phone before authorizing the connection.
- Have Android File Transfer installed or ready according to the phone manufacturer’s Mac instructions.
- If the Mac has several ports, note which one you use; hubs, adapters and damaged ports can interrupt MTP.
Wired transfer procedure
- Connect the unlocked Android phone to the Mac with the data-capable USB cable.
- On the phone, open the USB notification or USB preferences.
- Select File transfer, Transferring files or MTP, depending on the Android manufacturer’s wording. Leave it on Charging only and the Mac will not receive the storage connection.
- Approve any Android prompt asking to allow MTP, file access or the connected computer.
- On a Motorola phone, follow Motorola’s Android File Transfer instructions on the Mac and browse the phone’s available folders.
- Copy files to a Mac folder, wait for the transfer to finish, then eject or disconnect the phone safely.
Android folder names and what they contain vary by manufacturer and app. Camera photos are commonly stored under a DCIM folder, but do not delete or reorganize unfamiliar folders until you know which application uses them.
When the Mac does not recognize the phone
Recognition failures usually mean the phone is charging but has not established an MTP session. Work through these checks in order.

Check the cable and port
Try a different cable known to carry data, not merely power. Connect directly to the Mac instead of through a hub, dock or monitor, and try another Mac port. A cable that charges successfully can still have no data lines.
Change the Android USB mode
Keep the phone unlocked, open the USB notification and choose File transfer/MTP. If the notification is missing, disconnect and reconnect, then look in Android’s connected-device or USB settings. Samsung specifically advises selecting file transfer and allowing the MTP connection prompt.
Reauthorize the connection
Disconnect the phone, unlock it, reconnect and accept the authorization prompt. A denied prompt can prevent the Mac from seeing storage even when the cable is good.
Repair Smart Switch recognition problems
If Smart Switch is the tool that fails to recognize a Samsung phone, Samsung recommends checking the cable and port, allowing MTP access, setting USB to file transfer and, when necessary, reinstalling the device driver through Smart Switch. These steps address Smart Switch’s connection, not general Mac support for Android desktop mode.

Restart both sides
Restart the phone and Mac after changing USB permissions or installing transfer software. Then reconnect with the phone unlocked and the USB mode set to file transfer. If the phone still never offers MTP, update the phone’s system software and consult the manufacturer’s current support instructions for that model.
Using Smart Switch on a Mac
Samsung Smart Switch has a different purpose from DeX. Samsung documents it for backing up a Galaxy phone to a PC or Mac and for transferring or synchronizing data onto a new Galaxy. It is useful when replacing a phone or preserving a copy of selected content, not for opening Android apps in macOS.
What Smart Switch can help with
- Creating a backup of supported phone data on the Mac.
- Moving supported contacts, messages, photos and other content to a replacement Galaxy.
- Guiding a migration process instead of requiring manual folder-by-folder copying.
Important transfer limits
Samsung notes that some app data, encrypted content and DRM-protected content may not transfer. A completed Smart Switch operation therefore does not guarantee an identical application state, saved game, protected media library or encrypted file set on the new device. Check the destination app’s own export or cloud-backup procedure for anything important.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoosing Smart Switch or USB copy
- Choose USB file transfer when you need ordinary files immediately and want to select folders yourself.
- Choose Smart Switch when the goal is a structured Galaxy backup or migration.
- Use both when appropriate, while treating Smart Switch’s supported-data list and exclusions as the authority for what will move.
Common assumptions that cause problems
“The phone is Android, so every Android computer tool should work.”
Android is an operating-system family, not a guarantee of identical manufacturer features. DeX, Quick Share, Android File Transfer instructions and Smart Switch belong to different vendors or product paths. Verify each feature separately.

“A Mac mention on a DeX page means my phone is supported.”
Samsung’s macOS wording is general, while the listed requirements are associated with particular DeX modes and devices. Confirm the exact model and route with current support information.
“The phone appears in Finder, so Android apps should run there.”
Seeing files, or creating a backup, does not provide an Android application runtime. The Mac can access supported data without executing the phone’s apps as native Mac software.
“Any USB-C cable will transfer files.”
USB-C describes a connector shape, not guaranteed data capability. Use a cable specified for data transfer and test another cable if the phone only charges.

Quick Recap
A practical decision guide
- Need Android apps on a large screen? Investigate DeX or another model-specific desktop mode. Confirm the device, mode, Mac version and connection route; do not rely on a generic macOS statement.
- Need photos or documents on the Mac now? Use a data-capable USB cable, select File transfer/MTP and follow the manufacturer’s Mac transfer instructions.
- Need nearby wireless sharing? The documented Quick Share computer app is for Windows. Choose a Mac-supported alternative rather than assuming macOS compatibility.
- Need a Galaxy replacement or safety backup? Use Smart Switch on the Mac, then verify that important app, encrypted and DRM-protected data is covered.
What to verify before depending on the setup
- Exact Android phone or tablet model and region.
- Current Android, Samsung or Motorola software version.
- Current macOS version and the manufacturer’s stated compatibility.
- Whether the desired feature is desktop mode, wireless sharing, file transfer or migration.
- Required hardware: data cable, adapter, display, keyboard, mouse or Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
- What data is excluded from a backup or migration.
- A recovery plan, such as retaining the original phone and a second copy of important files until the transfer is verified.
