For local over-the-air (OTA) channels, use an OTA antenna—not the reflector from an old satellite dish. The dish and a broadcast antenna receive different signals. The coax cable already routed through your home may be reusable, but that depends on the cable path and any splitters, switches, or powered components attached to it.
What can you reuse from an old satellite installation?

Fairfax County’s overview distinguishes broadcast television, received by antenna, from satellite television, received by dish and carried by cable. The existing coax is a separate question from the dish itself; general use of coax in home communications does not confirm that a particular installation will pass OTA signals. How to connect an OTA antenna and scan for channels
- Connect the antenna. Attach an OTA antenna to the TV’s Antenna In, Air, or Cable input. If you want to use the old coax route, first identify where it goes and which components are connected along the way.
- Select the antenna source. If the TV offers an Air/Cable choice, select Air.
- Run an automatic channel scan. Use the TV’s channel setup menu to search for available broadcast channels.
- Adjust and rescan if needed. If no channels appear, check the connections and setup, reposition the antenna, and scan again. Available stations vary by location.
These connection and troubleshooting steps follow DISH’s HDTV Over-the-Air Antenna Support guide. Its guidance supports using a purpose-built OTA antenna; it does not certify an unidentified satellite cable run or its attached distribution equipment.
Check whether your TV has a digital tuner
An older television without a digital tuner may need a converter box to receive broadcast channels. Check the TV’s manual or labels for indications such as DTV, HDTV, ATSC, or digital tuner. If it lacks a digital tuner, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for using a compatible converter box.

Satellite service and local broadcast TV are different setups

DISH describes OTA viewing as connecting an antenna to the TV and switching TV inputs. That is a different receiving setup from satellite service; a retired dish does not itself become a broadcast antenna.

In the United States, the Federal Communications Commission’s Consumer and Governmental Affairs Bureau says its OTARD rules protect installation, maintenance, or use of certain antennas in areas under an owner’s or tenant’s exclusive use or control. The covered types include an antenna designed to receive local television broadcast signals. The guide also describes safety and historic-preservation exceptions, and says the rule does not apply to common areas such as many shared building roofs or exterior walls.
