Yes—an iPad can be used without Wi‑Fi, as long as the content or feature you need is already available on the device. Downloaded books and music, local files, and supported offline maps can work without an internet connection. To get online without Wi‑Fi, you need a Wi‑Fi + Cellular iPad with an active carrier plan or a separate hotspot.
What works on an iPad without Wi‑Fi?
Wi‑Fi is not required for every iPad task. The key distinction is whether an app can use content stored on the iPad or needs to contact an online service. Apple documents downloaded music and books for offline use, and its iPadOS 17 feature document describes downloading maps for use without Wi‑Fi or cellular signal.
Downloaded music, books, and audiobooks
Music that has been downloaded to the iPad can be played offline. Apple describes adding music through a subscription, buying and downloading it from the iTunes Store, or transferring it from a computer. Availability of services and features varies by region. Downloaded maps
Apple’s December 2023 iPadOS 17 feature document describes downloading maps for use when an iPad has no Wi‑Fi or cellular signal, including driving and walking routes. This documentation is specific to that feature and version; it does not establish that every iPad model, iPadOS release, map area, or navigation function behaves the same way. Files and app features that work locally
Files stored directly on the iPad can remain accessible without a network. Other apps may also provide offline functions, but availability depends on the app, its version, account or sign-in requirements, and whether the relevant content was downloaded rather than merely displayed from a cloud library. Do not assume a third-party app will work offline unless its documentation confirms that it does.

What needs an internet connection?
Without Wi‑Fi, cellular data, or a hotspot, the iPad has no internet connection. Websites, streaming, cloud-stored files that have not been downloaded, and live services that rely on a server will generally be unavailable until the iPad reconnects. A file or media item visible in an app is not necessarily stored locally; check that the download is complete before relying on it offline.
Can an iPad get online without Wi‑Fi?
That depends on the iPad’s configuration. Apple says Wi‑Fi + Cellular models can connect to a carrier cellular data network when Wi‑Fi is unavailable. This requires cellular service to be set up and may incur carrier charges. Apple also notes that cellular iPad models support data only—not ordinary cellular phone service. A Wi‑Fi-only iPad cannot connect directly to a carrier’s cellular network. It can still access the internet through a Personal Hotspot shared by an iPhone or another iPad with cellular service, if one is available. A hotspot provides a network connection; it does not make the iPad itself a cellular model.

Prepare your iPad before going offline
- Connect while you still have internet. Sign in to apps and complete any initial setup that might be required.
- Download what you plan to use. Save books, music, maps, and other app content to the iPad. For maps, download the target area if offline maps are supported on your device.
- Check local availability. Open the content and confirm it is downloaded, not simply listed in a cloud library. Where practical, test it while disconnected before your trip.
- Choose a way to get online if needed. Confirm that a Wi‑Fi + Cellular model has an active carrier plan, or arrange access to a Personal Hotspot.
Choosing between Wi‑Fi-only and Wi‑Fi + Cellular
If your goal is to use downloaded content away from a network, either configuration can do that; the deciding factor is whether you also need internet access while away from Wi‑Fi. A Wi‑Fi + Cellular model can use carrier data after service is set up, while a Wi‑Fi-only model depends on a separate hotspot for internet in those situations. Neither configuration makes streaming or cloud retrieval available when there is no connection, and the device purchase alone does not provide cellular service.
