Yes—Insta360 says you can use a phone case with Flow and Flow Pro when the case is no thicker than 1.5 mm. That limit is only the first check. With the case installed, the complete phone-and-case setup must stay within the gimbal’s recommended thickness, width and weight range, and the magnetic clamp must hold the phone firmly in the correct position.

What Insta360’s 1.5 mm case limit means

Insta360’s Flow and Flow Pro FAQ answers the question directly: a case is permitted, provided it is no thicker than 1.5 mm. This is product-specific guidance for those gimbals, not a universal guarantee that every case shape will work on every phone.

Thickness is measured at the case itself, but the clamp actually holds the combined assembly. A slim case can still create a poor fit if it has a raised camera island, unusually rigid edges, a built-in ring, a wallet section, a textured bumper or another feature that prevents the clamp from sitting flat. Treat 1.5 mm as a maximum case thickness, not as permission to ignore the rest of the fit.

In practical terms, a bare phone that is already close to the gimbal’s upper thickness limit may become unsuitable after a case is added. Conversely, a phone with enough clearance may work well with a thin, flat case. The only reliable way to know is to measure and test the complete mounted setup.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Check the complete phone-and-case dimensions

Insta360’s Flow-series compatibility guidance recommends these physical limits for the phone being mounted:

Measurement Recommended range How to apply it when using a case
Thickness 6.9–10 mm Measure the phone with the case installed, including any part that contacts the clamp.
Width 64–84 mm Measure across the complete setup where the clamp grips it.
Weight 130–300 g Weigh the phone, case and any attached item that remains on the phone while filming.

Flow 2’s official compatibility page lists the same physical dimensions and weight range. Insta360 warns that a phone outside those limits may not clamp securely and could fall. The warning matters even when the case itself is under 1.5 mm: a slightly oversized, heavy or awkwardly shaped setup can shift the center of gravity or prevent the jaws from gripping evenly.

Measure with the case fitted, rather than adding the bare-phone specification to the case manufacturer’s advertised thickness. Case dimensions are often quoted for the back panel and may not include lips, corners or raised sections. If a protective cover varies in thickness, use the thickest area that will sit inside the clamp.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

How to measure before mounting

  1. Install the case completely. Fit every corner and close any flap or modular section that you would keep on during recording.
  2. Measure thickness at the clamp area. Use a caliper if available; otherwise, use a ruler carefully and check both sides. Include the case, but do not count a camera lens protector that sits outside the clamp unless it changes how the phone rests.
  3. Measure width across the gripping zone. Avoid measuring only the display glass if the case has thick side rails.
  4. Weigh the assembled phone. Include a case-mounted battery, grip, card holder or other accessory that will remain attached. Remove temporary items such as a charging cable before weighing.
  5. Compare each result with the table. A setup that exceeds any recommended range deserves a cautious test without the case, and it may not be suitable for safe use.

Mount the phone so the clamp can hold it securely

Even a correctly sized phone can slip if it is off-center. The Flow Pro manual instructs users to stretch the clamp around the middle of the phone and align the clamp’s magnetic notch with the raised bump on the gimbal. Follow the same alignment principle whenever you mount a cased phone: the clamp should sit centrally, the phone should be straight, and the magnetic connection should meet cleanly.

  1. Power off or place the gimbal in a stable position. Keep the arms from swinging while you attach the phone.
  2. Open the magnetic phone clamp. Make sure its contact surfaces are clear of grit, loose film or a case flap.
  3. Position the clamp around the phone’s middle. Do not grip only the top or bottom third. Keep the clamp’s jaws on the case’s solid side rails rather than over a flexible button cover.
  4. Align the magnetic notch and raised bump. The notch in the clamp must meet the corresponding raised feature on the gimbal. Misalignment can leave the phone attached but poorly seated.
  5. Center the phone before releasing it. Check that the camera, screen and case are not forcing the clamp to one side.
  6. Perform a stationary security check. Hold the gimbal over a soft surface, gently tilt it in several directions and watch for movement. Stop if the phone shifts, rotates or separates from the clamp.
  7. Run a short motion test. Walk slowly and pan through the movements you expect to use. Recheck the clamp after the test before recording anything important.

These checks are prudent handling steps based on Insta360’s secure-clamping warning; they are not a separate manufacturer certification for every case design. If the phone feels loose, cannot be centered or needs unusual force to fit, remove the case before continuing.

Cases that are most likely to cause trouble

  • Thick protective shells: A case over 1.5 mm does not meet the Flow and Flow Pro FAQ’s stated limit.
  • Raised corners or camera surrounds: A thick rim can keep the clamp from sitting flat even if the back panel is thin.
  • Wallet and folio cases: A cover, card pocket or hinge can interfere with the clamp or shift the phone away from the center.
  • Built-in rings and stands: Hardware on the back may prevent the magnetic clamp from making a flat, stable connection.
  • Very soft silicone: Flexible material can compress unevenly, allowing the phone to creep during movement.
  • Adhesive accessories: A plate, grip or mount left on the case adds thickness and weight to the mounted setup.

A case does not need to be removed merely because it is protective. The deciding factors are the 1.5 mm case limit, the complete setup’s dimensions and weight, and whether the clamp closes evenly and remains secure.

What to do when the phone does not fit

The clamp will not close or the phone is too tight

Do not force the jaws over the case. Check for a flap, raised corner, button cover or accessory caught between the clamp and phone. Remove the case and test the bare phone. If the bare phone fits but the cased phone does not, the case is outside the practical fit even if its advertised thickness is close to 1.5 mm.

The phone fits but slides or rotates

Recenter the clamp around the phone’s middle and clean the contact surfaces. Confirm that the magnetic notch is aligned with the gimbal’s raised bump. If movement continues, remove the case and repeat the test. A loose mount is a safety issue because Insta360 says phones larger or heavier than the recommended limits may not clamp securely and could fall.

The gimbal vibrates or struggles after the case is installed

Check the combined weight and thickness, not just the phone’s specifications. A case-mounted battery, grip or other accessory can move the setup toward or beyond the recommended 130–300 g range. Remove the extra accessory first, then test without the case if necessary. Do not continue filming while the phone is visibly pulling the gimbal off balance.

The phone mounts physically but features in the app are unavailable

Physical mounting and app compatibility are separate checks. A phone can fit the clamp while still lacking the operating-system, device or app compatibility needed for particular Flow features. Flow 2’s compatibility information discusses those software requirements separately from the physical dimensions. Check the compatibility information for your exact gimbal, phone and operating-system version before assuming that a successful mount means every app function will work.

Flow and Flow Pro versus Flow 2 and Flow 2 Pro clamps

If you need a replacement clamp, identify the gimbal generation first. Insta360’s accessory table distinguishes the clamp used by Flow and Flow Pro from the clamp used by Flow 2 and Flow 2 Pro:

Gimbal generation Compatible clamp family Cross-generation warning
Flow and Flow Pro Flow/Flow Pro magnetic phone clamp The Flow/Flow Pro clamp is marked unsupported for Flow 2 and Flow 2 Pro.
Flow 2 and Flow 2 Pro Flow 2/Flow 2 Pro magnetic phone clamp The Flow 2/Flow 2 Pro clamp is marked unsupported for Flow and Flow Pro.

Do not assume that two clamps that look similar are interchangeable. Read the model name printed on the gimbal or its original packaging before ordering a replacement. A clamp from the wrong generation may not seat correctly, regardless of whether the phone and case meet the dimensional limits.

A safe pre-recording checklist

  • The case itself is no thicker than 1.5 mm for Flow or Flow Pro.
  • The phone-plus-case assembly measures 6.9–10 mm thick, 64–84 mm wide and 130–300 g, within Insta360’s recommended physical range.
  • No wallet flap, ring, stand, plate or other accessory prevents a flat clamp connection.
  • The phone is centered and the clamp grips its middle rather than an edge.
  • The magnetic notch is aligned with the gimbal’s raised bump.
  • A gentle stationary tilt test produces no sliding, rocking or separation.
  • A short walking test remains stable before you begin a full recording.
  • The phone and operating system meet the separate app-compatibility requirements for your gimbal.

If any item fails, remove the case or accessory and test again. If the bare phone still exceeds the recommended dimensions or weight, the problem is not the case and the setup may be outside the gimbal’s safe fit range.

Answer in one sentence

You can use an Insta360 Flow or Flow Pro with a phone case up to 1.5 mm thick, but only when the complete cased phone remains within the 6.9–10 mm thickness, 64–84 mm width and 130–300 g weight recommendations and is held firmly by the correctly aligned magnetic clamp.
