Yes—on a Windows PC, the 8BitDo Retro Mechanical Keyboard is officially supported from Windows 10 version 1903 onward. It works as a conventional keyboard, with Bluetooth, 2.4G wireless and wired USB connection options. The word “joystick,” however, can describe two different products: the optional Super Stick keyboard extension, whose exact Windows input behavior is not fully documented on the product page, or the separate Arcade Stick for Xbox, which 8BitDo explicitly lists with joystick and gamepad modes. Your game must still accept the resulting keyboard or controller inputs; Windows compatibility is not a promise of identical support in every title.

What you can use on a modern Windows gaming PC

8BitDo lists the standard Retro Mechanical Keyboard as compatible with Windows 10 (1903) and later, as well as Android 9.0 and later. The 87-key board can connect over Bluetooth Low Energy, 2.4G wireless or wired USB, and supports programmable keys through 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2. Those specifications establish that Windows can use it as a keyboard; they do not make it a universal game controller.

The Xbox-styled appearance does not change that distinction. The Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard – Xbox Edition is also listed for Windows 10 (1903) and later, with Bluetooth 5.0, 2.4G wireless and wired USB. Its official support FAQ answers “No” when asked whether it can be used on Xbox consoles. In other words, “Designed with Xbox” identifies the design and licensing, not console compatibility.

  • Super Stick: an extension named for the Retro Mechanical Keyboard. The official product page does not specify whether it is analog, how it enumerates in Windows, or whether every game sees it as a gamepad.
  • Arcade Stick for Xbox: a separate controller. 8BitDo lists Windows 10 and later support, wired USB-C and 2.4G wireless, plus joystick and gamepad modes.

Keyboard, Super Stick and Arcade Stick: the important differences

Hardware Role Windows support stated by 8BitDo What that means for games
Retro Mechanical Keyboard 87-key mechanical keyboard Windows 10 (1903)+; Android 9.0+ Use it wherever a game accepts normal keyboard keys. Programmable keys can be assigned with Ultimate Software V2.
Super Stick Named keyboard extension Detailed input emulation is not stated on the reviewed product page Check what Windows and your game report after connecting it; do not assume analog-stick or gamepad behavior.
Arcade Stick for Xbox Standalone arcade controller Windows 10+; wired USB-C and 2.4G wireless Its joystick and gamepad modes are intended for arcade play, including fighting games, but each title still needs to support the selected mode.

The Super Stick is therefore not interchangeable with the Arcade Stick. The former belongs to the keyboard accessory ecosystem; the latter is a complete arcade controller. If a listing bundles a Super Stick, verify the contents of that specific listing rather than assuming every keyboard package includes one.

What “compatible with Windows” does—and does not—promise

Compatibility means the operating system requirement is met and the device is designed to communicate with Windows. It does not guarantee that a game will expose every key, accept a programmable assignment, recognize an accessory as an analog axis, or allow simultaneous keyboard and controller mappings.

Game support is determined by the title’s own input layer. A PC game that offers keyboard bindings should generally let you assign keys from the Retro Mechanical Keyboard. A game that only accepts XInput-style gamepads may ignore a device that Windows presents as a keyboard. Conversely, a title with a controller menu may detect the Arcade Stick in its gamepad mode but not in its joystick mode. The official pages do not provide a game-by-game compatibility list, so treat the in-game binding screen as the final authority.

  • Programmable keys, Dual Super Buttons, and Super Stick, with independent control panel.
  • 87 keys. Top mount style with Kailh Box White Switches.

How to set up the Retro Mechanical Keyboard

Start with a wired connection when you are diagnosing a game. USB removes wireless pairing and battery variables and gives you a clear baseline.

  1. Confirm the operating system: use Windows 10 build 1903 or newer, or a current Windows 11 release. If the PC is below that requirement, update Windows before troubleshooting the keyboard.
  2. Choose a connection: plug in the supplied USB cable, pair through Bluetooth, or use the 2.4G receiver. Keep the receiver directly connected to the PC while testing rather than through an unpowered hub.
  3. Verify Windows input: open a text editor and press several letter, number and modifier keys. This confirms ordinary keyboard communication before you open a game.
  4. Install the configuration utility only if needed: use 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2 for supported programmable keys. Record the original assignments before changing them so you can restore a known layout.
  5. Bind keys inside the game: open the title’s Settings or Options menu, select Keyboard or Controls, choose an action, press the desired key, and save. If the game offers separate keyboard and controller profiles, edit the keyboard profile.

Some games capture a key as soon as you press it; others require clicking an “Apply” or “Save” button. If a key does not appear in the binding field, test the board in a text editor and then try the wired mode again. A successful text-editor test shows that Windows receives the key, while a failed in-game assignment points to the title’s input restrictions or its selected control profile.

How to evaluate the Super Stick without making assumptions

8BitDo’s Retro Mechanical Keyboard page lists the Super Stick alongside the Super Button and Super ABXY as keyboard extensions. It does not document an analog range, a Windows device class, axis calibration, or a universal controller-emulation mode. Avoid describing it as an analog gamepad stick unless the manual for your exact hardware says so.

  • 108-key full layout. Integrated numpad and function key shortcuts.
  • Kailh Box White Switches V2. Dye-sub PBT keycaps. Top mount style. Hot-swappable PCB. Support n-key rollover.
  • Dye-sublimation PBT keycaps with MDA-like height.
  • Fast-mapping on programmable buttons (no software needed).
  1. Connect the keyboard and Super Stick according to the instructions supplied with your revision.
  2. In Windows, check whether movement produces keyboard keystrokes, a joystick/game-controller device, or no input in the game you are testing. The exact Windows panel can vary by version; the important observation is what the game’s own control screen detects.
  3. Open the game’s controls menu and try assigning the movement or buttons to the desired actions. If the title only offers keyboard bindings and the Super Stick does not generate keys, it may not be usable in that title without an officially supported remapping layer.
  4. Test one game at a time. A result in one title is not evidence that another title will interpret the extension identically.

This cautious process is necessary because the manufacturer’s published information establishes the accessory’s relationship to the keyboard, not a complete input specification.

Using the Arcade Stick for Xbox on PC

If by “joystick” you mean a dedicated arcade controller, the Arcade Stick for Xbox is the clearer match. 8BitDo lists Windows 10 and later compatibility, USB-C wired operation and 2.4G wireless, and identifies joystick and gamepad modes. The product is aimed at arcade play and specifically calls out fighting games.

  1. Connect in wired mode first: attach the USB-C cable and wait for Windows to finish detecting the device.
  2. Select the appropriate mode: use joystick mode when the game exposes a generic joystick configuration; use gamepad mode when the title expects controller buttons or an XInput-like layout. The switch or selector name depends on the hardware revision, so follow the included manual.
  3. Open the game’s controller page: choose the detected device, assign directions and buttons, and save the profile.
  4. Test menu navigation and gameplay separately: some games accept controller input during play but keep menus on the keyboard, while others require a controller profile to be enabled before launch.
  5. Only then try 2.4G wireless: if wireless behaves differently, return to USB to determine whether the issue is pairing, receiver placement or the game’s device selection.

“Joystick mode” and “gamepad mode” are product features, not guarantees that every modern PC game supports both. Fighting games and arcade emulators commonly provide explicit controller mapping, but the title’s documentation and control menu determine the final result.

Steam Input: keep the claims separate

8BitDo’s Steam compatibility page describes Steam Input features for compatible controllers, including button mapping and gyro configuration. It does not identify the Retro Mechanical Keyboard or Super Stick as Steam-compatible controllers in the material available here.

Steam can launch a game that uses keyboard input without treating the keyboard as a Steam controller. If you add a keyboard key to a game’s in-game binding menu, that is ordinary keyboard support. If you want Steam Input remapping, first confirm that Steam detects the device in the controller settings and that the specific game accepts the resulting controller profile. Do not infer controller support for the keyboard from the existence of a general 8BitDo Steam page.

Xbox Edition details that affect PC use

The Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard – Xbox Edition keeps the 87-key layout and lists Windows 10 (1903)+ and Android 9.0+ compatibility. Its connection choices are wired USB, Bluetooth 5.0 and 2.4G wireless. The included Dual Super Buttons are programmable, but the support information says the Xbox button itself does not support remapping.

That fixed Xbox button matters when designing a custom layout: assign other supported keys for game actions and leave the Xbox button as a system or decorative control. The official product page and its support FAQ are the appropriate references for edition-specific behavior.

Connection choices and practical trade-offs

Connection When to choose it What to check
Wired USB First setup, troubleshooting, tournaments or any situation where you want the fewest variables Use a functioning data cable and a direct PC port; confirm Windows detects the device.
2.4G wireless A cable-free desk while retaining the supplied receiver workflow Keep the receiver accessible and verify that the correct device mode is selected.
Bluetooth Convenient pairing when your PC has Bluetooth enabled Remove stale pairings if the device connects but inputs go to another profile; retest with USB if necessary.

The standard keyboard page specifies Bluetooth Low Energy, while the Xbox Edition page specifies Bluetooth 5.0. These are the manufacturer’s connection descriptions for the respective editions; do not assume that every revision has identical radio behavior.

Troubleshooting when a game does not respond

Windows sees nothing

  • Switch to wired USB and try another direct port.
  • Confirm the PC meets Windows 10 version 1903 or later.
  • Reconnect the 2.4G receiver or remove and re-pair the Bluetooth device.
  • Test in a text editor. If no keys appear there, the problem is below the game level.

Windows works but the game ignores the keyboard

  • Open the game’s keyboard-binding screen instead of its controller screen.
  • Disable a conflicting controller profile temporarily and bind one action at a time.
  • Check whether the game requires a restart after changing input devices.
  • Use the keyboard’s standard keys first; add programmable assignments only after the default layout works.

The Super Stick does not move a character

  • Determine whether the title detects it as keys, a joystick or nothing; the official product page does not define that behavior.
  • Try the game’s keyboard mapping and controller mapping separately.
  • Test a second title only as a comparison, not as proof of universal compatibility.
  • Consult the exact accessory manual or listing for your revision before buying adapters or software.

The Arcade Stick is detected in the wrong way

  • Toggle between joystick and gamepad modes while the game is closed, then relaunch it.
  • Rebind directions and buttons after changing modes; a game may store separate profiles.
  • Use USB to rule out 2.4G pairing or receiver placement issues.

Which setup should you choose?

Your priority Most suitable option Reason
Typing, strategy, simulation or games with robust keyboard bindings Retro Mechanical Keyboard Its Windows 10 (1903)+ support and programmable keys address keyboard-first play.
A keyboard plus an experimental or accessory control Retro Mechanical Keyboard with Super Stick It is the named extension ecosystem, but verify the extension’s actual input behavior for each game.
Fighting games and arcade-focused play Arcade Stick for Xbox It is a separate Windows-compatible controller with stated joystick and gamepad modes.
Playing on an Xbox console Neither keyboard option described here The Xbox Edition support FAQ explicitly says the keyboard cannot be used on Xbox consoles.

Before purchasing, confirm the edition, included accessories, connection method and return policy. The Super Stick may be sold separately or bundled differently, and a product name that includes “Xbox” does not by itself establish console support.

Bottom line for modern PC games

You can use an 8BitDo Retro Mechanical Keyboard on a modern Windows PC when the computer meets the Windows 10 (1903)+ requirement, and games that accept keyboard input should let you bind its keys. Treat the Super Stick as an accessory whose detailed input behavior must be verified in your own titles. If you need a clearly defined joystick-style controller, choose the separate Arcade Stick for Xbox and select its joystick or gamepad mode according to the game. In every case, test the exact device and mode in the game’s control settings rather than equating general Windows compatibility with universal game support.
