Usually, no. An “18V” label alone does not make a battery interchangeable between tool brands. Compatibility depends on the exact battery platform, tool and charger—and sometimes the model year or battery type. Use the battery and charger specified for the tool unless its manufacturer confirms that exact combination is compatible. Makita’s platform FAQ and Milwaukee’s M18 FAQ describe compatibility within their own platforms, not between brands.
Why matching voltage is not enough
Voltage describes an electrical characteristic; it is not a shared battery standard. A pack also has to fit the tool’s connection and meet the tool’s requirements for battery communication and protection. The charger must be designed for that battery, too. A pack that slides into a tool—or can be made to fit with an adapter—is not automatically electrically compatible or approved for use.
Check the platform name and the exact tool, battery and charger models in the manufacturer’s documentation. Makita distinguishes its CXT, LXT and XGT platforms and says batteries are compatible within their respective platforms. Milwaukee’s statement that all M18 batteries work with M18 tools and chargers is likewise specific to M18. Neither statement establishes compatibility with another brand. There are legitimate multi-brand battery systems, but they apply only to products included in the named system. Do not assume that every 18V tool from a participating manufacturer belongs to the same alliance.

Bosch Professional and AMPShare
AMPShare is Bosch Professional’s shared 18V system for Bosch tools and products from alliance members. Confirm that the specific tool and battery are part of AMPShare; the name does not make other brands’ 18V platforms compatible. Bosch Professional also says its 18V batteries work with Bosch 18V tools since 2018, while identifying exceptions: GML 20/50 and GKS 18V-LI tools made before 2018 may not work with ProCORE batteries. Bosch DIY and POWER FOR ALL
POWER FOR ALL is a separate system for Bosch green 18V products and products from its named alliance brands. Bosch says the system dates to 2007 and names Gardena, Bosch Home Appliances, Husqvarna, GLORIA, Wagner, Rapid, Steinel, Kübler Workwear and PerfectPro. Its page describes an ecosystem of 100 tools from 10 brands; that is Bosch’s own count, not an independently audited total. Check that the exact product is identified as POWER FOR ALL compatible. This DIY/home system is not interchangeable with Bosch Professional/AMPShare merely because both use 18V batteries. Bosch DIY POWER FOR ALL

- Allows for use of 20V MAX* Lithium Ion batteries in most 18V DEWALT tools
- Requires use of 20V MAX* DEWALT charger
- Do not use with premium DEWALT batteries in DC970 or DC759 tools
- This Adapter will not work with 20V/60V FLEXVOLT Batteries
- The DCA1820 adapter is compatible with the following batteries only: 1.5 Ah, 2.0 Ah, 3.0 Ah, 4.0 Ah, and 5.0 Ah XR
What about an adapter?
Adapters can bridge particular products within a brand, but that does not make batteries universally interchangeable. DEWALT’s DCA1820 is an official example: it lets specified DEWALT 20V MAX batteries work in most DEWALT 18V tools. It is not a cross-brand adapter. DEWALT’s compatibility information separates tools where the adapter does not fit, fits but does not function, or works. It also warns against using certain premium battery packs with the DC970 and DC759 compact drills. Check the full tool and battery models against the current list before buying or using it. Do not treat a third-party adapter as proof of safe, supported compatibility. The reviewed manufacturer sources do not establish universal compatibility for generic adapters. Makita Power Tools (HK) Limited, in a safety statement dated January 2, 2026, says: “Makita genuine lithium-ion battery products are designed exclusively for use with Makita cordless power tools and their corresponding chargers.” The statement warns against unapproved cross-brand use in the Hong Kong subsidiary’s stated scope; its English version is translated from Chinese, and the Chinese original prevails if they differ. - 【Breathe New Life into Your Old 18V Tools】This DCA1820 adapter allows you to power your existing 18V NiCd/NiMH tools (drills, nailers, saws, etc.) with 20V MAX lithium batteries (DCB200, DCB201, DCB203, DCB204, DCB206). It delivers the same performance as original setup, saving money while keeping your trusted tools running. Stop being forced to replace perfectly good 18V tools just because of a battery platform change.
- 【Works as OEM Adapter – Specifically for Older Nailers】Our DCA1820 actually works with older 18V nailers. If you invested heavily in 18V nail guns and want to continue using them with new 20V batteries, this is the solution that truly works.
- 【Solid Build That Takes a Beating】This adapter fits tightly with no wobble or connection issues, and holds up well under regular job site use. The performance and savings are well worth it.
- 【Truly Easy to Install & Remove】Designed for easier removal than original adapters. Simply snap the adapter into your 18V tool, then attach your 20V battery – This is an adapter, not a battery. Do not charge the battery while the adapter is attached. Remove the adapter before placing the battery on a charger.
- 【Safe & Support】Complies with FCC, RoHS, and CE safety standards. Perfect for homeowners and pros who want to bridge the 18V–20V gap without replacing a workshop full of tools.
How to check a specific battery and tool
- Read the platform labels. Note the exact battery platform and tool model—not just the voltage printed on the pack.
- Check the manufacturer’s compatibility page or manual. Look for the exact battery-to-tool pairing, and check any model-year, battery-type or regional caveats.
- Check the charger separately. Use a charger the manufacturer specifies for that battery; tool compatibility does not establish charger compatibility.
- Verify any adapter against both models. Confirm that the adapter is manufacturer-approved for the exact pairing and read exclusions for fit, function and battery type.
- Follow the manufacturer’s safety guidance. If documentation does not confirm the combination, do not assume it is safe or supported.
What to compare when choosing a battery platform
If you are deciding which ecosystem to invest in, compare documented compatibility rather than voltage labels or broad brand claims.
- Exact coverage: Which batteries, tools and chargers are confirmed compatible?
- Alliance membership: Is the particular tool included in the named shared system?
- Exceptions: Are there model-year, battery-generation or capacity limitations?
- Adapter scope: Is it made or approved by the tool manufacturer, and does its list cover your exact models?
- Safety guidance: What does the manufacturer say about use, charging and unsupported combinations?
The manufacturer pages cited here do not provide a common independent performance dataset for ranking these systems. For any specific pairing, the tool’s current manual and compatibility list are the deciding references.
