Yes—AirPlay can work without internet, and in some supported setups it can work without an existing Wi-Fi network. The distinction matters: devices on the same local Wi-Fi network may stream to each other even when that network has no internet service. If there is no local network at all, AirPlay’s peer-to-peer mode may connect compatible devices directly.
Wi-Fi and internet are different requirements
A Wi-Fi network is a local connection between devices; internet service is what lets them reach online services. AirPlay can use a local network without internet access, so a router outage does not necessarily prevent streaming between devices connected to the same Wi-Fi.
Apple’s usual consumer instructions tell you to connect the iPhone, iPad, or Mac and the AirPlay receiver to the same Wi-Fi network. That is the simplest setup when a network is available. Apple also documents peer-to-peer AirPlay, which can establish a direct temporary connection without either device joining an existing network.

Apple explains that AirPlay can discover receivers through Bonjour on a network, Bluetooth Low Energy advertisement, or peer-to-peer discovery. In peer-to-peer mode, devices create or join a temporary direct network. Apple’s deployment guidance says devices do not need to be on the same network—or on any network at all—for supported AirPlay discovery and connection methods. That statement is not a guarantee that every AirPlay receiver supports peer-to-peer operation.

What devices support peer-to-peer AirPlay?
Apple’s published requirements specify these Apple TV and sending-device combinations:
- Receiver: Apple TV HD with tvOS 9 or later, or Apple TV 4K with tvOS 11 or later.
- Sender: iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices from late 2012 or later, running the latest version of their operating system.
These are Apple’s stated thresholds in its AirPlay deployment guidance. Check your particular model and installed software rather than relying on the product family name alone. Apple’s cited requirements identify Apple TV models; they do not establish peer-to-peer support for every third-party smart TV. For a non-Apple receiver, confirm the exact model’s capabilities with its manufacturer.

What can you play without internet?
A local AirPlay connection does not make online content available offline. A photo or video already stored on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac can be sent over the local connection. A movie or show that an app must fetch from the internet can still require internet access, even if AirPlay has successfully connected to the TV.
Apple notes that internet connectivity is useful for software updates and internet-provided content. Whether a particular app can play a downloaded title offline depends on that app and the content; check its offline-playback requirements if the media is not stored directly on your device.

How to try AirPlay without internet
When a Wi-Fi network is present
- Connect the sending device and the Apple TV or other AirPlay receiver to the same Wi-Fi network. The network does not necessarily need internet service for local device communication.
- On iPhone or iPad, open the video and tap the AirPlay control, or open Control Center and choose Screen Mirroring. On a Mac, use the AirPlay or screen-mirroring control and select the receiver.
- Select the receiver. If prompted for a code or password, follow the on-screen access-control prompt.
Apple’s consumer instructions describe same-Wi-Fi streaming and mirroring in Use AirPlay to stream video or mirror the screen.
When there is no existing network
- Check that the sending device and receiver meet Apple’s peer-to-peer compatibility requirements, and update their operating systems if possible.
- Turn on the receiver, keep the devices nearby, and check that AirPlay is enabled and permitted in the receiver’s settings.
- Open the AirPlay or Screen Mirroring controls on the sending device and look for the receiver. If it appears, select it and complete any passcode prompt.
Discovery or access settings can prevent a connection even when the equipment is compatible. A passcode request is an access-control measure, not a sign that internet access is required. Apple says peer-to-peer AirPlay uses device authentication; Apple TV also lets owners control who can stream and whether a password is required.

If the receiver does not appear
- For standard Wi-Fi AirPlay: Verify both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network, then check that the receiver is powered on and AirPlay is allowed.
- For peer-to-peer AirPlay: Recheck the exact receiver model and operating-system requirements. Not every AirPlay-enabled television is confirmed to support peer-to-peer connections.
- For either setup: Bring the devices closer, make sure they are on, and check for software updates. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance recommends these checks and the same-Wi-Fi check for a standard network setup.
- If connection succeeds but playback fails: Determine whether the media is stored locally or needs to be fetched online. A local AirPlay connection cannot replace internet access required by a streaming service.
