For a personally owned Meta Quest, assume you need a Meta account. Meta uses that account to sign in to the headset and manage purchased apps. You do not have to connect Facebook or Instagram, so “without Facebook” is supported; “without a Meta account” is not the normal consumer setup. The only documented no-account Quest path is a narrowly controlled Shared Mode deployment for organization-owned devices, not a workaround for an individual buyer.
The short answer for a personal Meta Quest
Meta’s current account model separates the login needed for the headset from the social accounts you may choose to connect. When you buy a Quest for yourself, the Meta account is the account layer used to log into the VR device and view or manage apps you have purchased. Meta describes this account as the way to continue using its VR devices, even though it is not a Facebook profile.
Facebook and Instagram linking is optional. A person who does not want Facebook or Instagram features in VR can leave those accounts unconnected. Linking can add social functions such as finding Facebook friends or chatting through Messenger, but those features are benefits of linking rather than the basic Quest login.
That distinction matters when reading “no account” claims online. A Quest can be used without a Facebook account, but the published consumer setup does not provide an account-free personal ownership mode. If avoiding every Meta account is a firm requirement, do not buy a personal Quest expecting to activate it anonymously.

Meta account, Meta Horizon profile, Facebook, and the phone app are different things
Several names appear during setup, and treating them as interchangeable creates unnecessary confusion.
Meta account: the device and purchase login
The Meta account is the underlying account used for VR-device login and app management. Meta’s own wording is explicit: “Your Meta account is not a social media profile; it lets you log into your VR devices and view and manage your purchased apps in one place.” That statement comes from Meta’s July 7, 2022 announcement introducing the account system and Horizon profiles.
Because purchases are associated with this account, changing accounts is not equivalent to changing a local headset user name. Apps, entitlements, and account-level settings are managed through the account that owns them. The available official material does not establish what happens to every app or entitlement after an account is suspended or removed, so do not assume that deleting an account creates a transferable, account-free library.
Meta Horizon profile: your social identity in VR
A Horizon profile is created after the Meta account. It is the identity other people can see in Meta’s social VR surfaces: you choose a username, display name, photo, avatar, and visibility or privacy controls. Meta says one Horizon profile can be created per Meta account.
The profile is therefore not a substitute login. You need the Meta account first, and the profile sits on top of it. Adjusting profile visibility does not remove the account requirement for the headset.
Facebook or Instagram: optional connections
Meta allows people who do not want Facebook or Instagram in VR to keep those services disconnected. You can still use a Meta account for Quest without turning the headset into a Facebook login. If you later want connected social features, you can link the relevant account; the decision is separate from creating the Meta account itself.

Meta’s mobile app: a setup companion, not the account itself
Meta’s current “Getting started” help hub covers Quest 3S, Quest 3, Quest Pro, Quest 2, and the original Quest, and includes material about login and mobile-app syncing. That documentation confirms the app is part of the setup guidance, but it does not establish that a phone is never needed under every setup condition. Plan for a compatible phone and the current Quest app during initial setup unless the instructions for your exact headset and region say otherwise. Do not confuse the app with a separate requirement to maintain a Facebook account.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat changed in 2022–2023, and what that means now
Meta announced the new account system on July 7, 2022, with an update on August 23, 2022. Existing users who signed in with an Oculus account were given a transition period. Meta said they would need a Meta account and a Horizon profile from January 1, 2023, to continue using Meta VR devices.
January 1, 2023 was a migration deadline for the old Oculus-login arrangement, not a current deadline that new buyers must meet again. The durable policy point is the separation of layers: Meta account for device login and app management, optional Facebook or Instagram connections, and Horizon profile for the social identity. A current buyer should follow the setup instructions for the specific Quest model rather than treating the historical migration date as a special activation code or expiry date.
What setup normally looks like for an individual owner
The exact screens can change with firmware, app releases, and region, but the account sequence is stable in Meta’s published explanation. Use this checklist before opening the box:
- Create or sign in to a Meta account.
- Use that account when the headset asks for VR-device login.
- Complete the Horizon-profile step, choosing the public-facing details and privacy controls you want.
- Use Meta’s current Quest setup guidance and mobile-app syncing instructions for your model.
- Keep Facebook or Instagram disconnected if you do not want their linked social features.
- Review which account owns any paid apps before buying software, especially if more than one person may use the headset.
The practical implication is straightforward: removing Facebook from the plan does not remove the Meta login step. If a retailer, video, or forum post says a factory reset will let you skip the account, treat that as unverified; the official consumer material does not describe a reset-based account-free mode.

Can you use Quest without Facebook?
Yes, according to Meta’s account explanation. Facebook or Instagram do not have to be connected to the Meta account. You can decline those links and still use the account layer required for Quest login and app management.

Some connected capabilities will not be available without the link. Meta specifically describes benefits such as finding Facebook friends and chatting through Messenger when accounts are connected. Those are optional social integrations, not prerequisites for owning the headset.
If privacy is your concern, separate the decisions:
- Decide whether you are willing to create the Meta account required for personal Quest use.
- Leave Facebook and Instagram unlinked if you do not want those services connected to VR.
- Set the Horizon profile’s username, visibility, and other privacy controls deliberately.
- Check the permissions and information shown by the current setup screens instead of relying on old screenshots.
This approach meets a “no Facebook” preference, but it does not satisfy a “no Meta account of any kind” requirement.
The narrow no-account exception: organization-managed Shared Mode
Meta for Work documents a Shared Mode for organization-managed Quest devices in Meta Horizon Device Manager. An administrator can configure whether a managed device requires each user to sign in with an account. In the no-login configuration, users run the apps assigned by the organization rather than setting up the headset as personal owners.
| Shared Mode configuration | What the administrator controls | Age threshold stated by Meta for Work | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Account required | Users sign in with a managed Meta account; the first person signing in sets up a Horizon profile. | 18+, subject to applicable local legal requirements. | Organization-managed hardware where individual sign-in and profiles are required. |
| Account not required | Users access only the apps assigned to the device, under the organization’s administration. | 13+, subject to applicable local legal requirements. | Schools, businesses, training rooms, and similar managed deployments. |
These age thresholds are conditions in Meta for Work’s managed-device documentation, not a general consumer age policy and not a promise that every country applies the same rules. The administrator must enroll and manage the hardware; the mode is designed around controlled app access and organizational ownership.
That distinction is decisive for buyers. You cannot purchase a normal consumer Quest, select Shared Mode from an ordinary account menu, and turn it into an anonymous personal headset based on this documentation. The exception proves only that Meta supports an administrator-controlled deployment in which end users may not need individual accounts.

Guest use is different from buying a headset without an account
People often mean “I want someone else to try my headset” when they ask about no-account use. That is a guest-access question, not an ownership question.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Apple Vision Pro Guest User
Apple documents Guest User as a temporary session on an already set up Vision Pro. The owner authorizes the guest and can allow all apps or only selected apps. The guest is borrowing an existing device; this mode does not show that a new Vision Pro owner can complete first-time setup without an Apple Account.
For the nearby iPhone or iPad authorization route, Apple specifies visionOS 2.4 or later on the Vision Pro and iOS or iPadOS 18.4 or later on the nearby device. The same Apple Account, with two-factor authentication enabled, must be signed in on the Vision Pro and the approving iPhone or iPad, and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth must be on. Apple also documents a way to continue without an iPhone or iPad by double-clicking the Digital Crown during the new-guest flow.
Guest privacy needs attention. A guest may see information inside apps the owner allows, including playlists or health data exposed by those apps. A passcode restricts access to certain Settings areas, but it does not replace the owner’s responsibility to choose accessible apps carefully.
Why this does not answer the Quest ownership question
Guest mode assumes a host device, a host account, and an owner who controls the session. It is not an account-free activation path for a buyer. The same ownership-versus-borrowing distinction applies when evaluating any headset: ask whether you are setting up your own hardware, using an organization’s managed hardware, or temporarily borrowing somebody else’s.
Could a PlayStation headset avoid the Meta account requirement?
A console headset uses a different hardware ecosystem, but the available Sony setup guide does not establish an account-free PlayStation experience. Sony’s quick-start material covers original PS VR setup with PS4 and PS5. It also states that PS VR2 is compatible only with PS5.

Original PS VR adds console-dependent equipment, including its camera and, when using the original headset with PS5, a camera adapter. PS VR2’s PS5-only requirement is a separate hardware dependency. These facts may matter if your objection is to a standalone headset tied to one company’s account system, but they do not prove that every PlayStation use case works without a PlayStation account. Do not buy a console headset on an assumption the cited setup guide does not support.
| Question to compare | Meta Quest personal ownership | Organization-managed Quest Shared Mode | Apple Vision Pro Guest User | PlayStation VR family |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Is this a normal new-owner setup? | Yes; a Meta account is part of the consumer login and app-management model. | No; it is an administrator-managed deployment. | No; it is temporary use of an already set up headset. | Depends on the console setup; the cited guide does not settle account requirements. |
| Can the end user avoid a personal account? | Not in the documented personal setup. | Yes, in the administrator-selected no-account mode. | The guest uses the owner’s device and authorization, not independent ownership. | Not established by the cited setup guide. |
| What hardware is required? | Standalone Quest headset category, with setup guidance that includes mobile-app syncing. | Managed Quest hardware and Meta Horizon Device Manager administration. | An already configured Vision Pro; nearby iPhone/iPad route has version and account conditions. | PS4 or PS5 for original PS VR; PS5 only for PS VR2. |
| Who controls app access? | The signed-in account and platform controls. | The organization assigns the available apps. | The owner chooses all apps or selected apps for the guest. | Console and platform settings; account details are not established here. |
Choose based on the account constraint you actually have
If you only want to avoid Facebook
A personal Quest remains consistent with that requirement. Create the Meta account needed for the headset, leave Facebook and Instagram unlinked, and configure the Horizon profile’s privacy settings. This is the supported distinction Meta makes in its account announcement.
If you want no Meta account at all
Do not treat a personal Quest as meeting that requirement. The official consumer materials reviewed do not describe anonymous activation, permanent offline ownership without account login, or a factory-reset bypass. The managed Shared Mode exception is for organizations and cannot be generalized to retail hardware.
If you are equipping a classroom, lab, or business
Investigate Meta for Work’s Shared Mode and its administration requirements. Decide whether users should sign in with managed accounts or use the no-login configuration with assigned apps. Check local age and legal requirements because Meta lists 18+ for account-required Shared Mode and 13+ for no-account Shared Mode, subject to local law.
If you are lending a headset
Look for a documented guest or multi-user feature on the specific platform. On Vision Pro, the owner controls app access and should consider the personal information visible inside allowed apps. Do not infer that a guest session changes the account requirement for the owner’s initial setup.
If you are comparing console-based alternatives
Include the console, camera, adapter, and platform-account dependencies in the total decision. PS VR2’s PS5-only compatibility may be more important to your budget and room setup than the headset’s account policy, which the cited quick-start guide does not fully specify.
Common misconceptions and how to avoid them
- “Meta account” means “Facebook account.” False. Meta introduced a separate account layer for VR; Facebook and Instagram connections are optional.
- A Horizon profile is an alternative login. False. It is the social-facing profile created after the Meta account.
- Shared Mode makes every Quest account-free. False. It is an administrator-controlled mode for organization-managed devices.
- A guest session means a new owner needs no account. False. Guest access presumes a host who already set up and controls the headset.
- A console headset is automatically account-free. Unproven. Hardware compatibility and account policy are separate questions.
- An old 2023 migration notice is a current setup deadline. False. January 1, 2023 concerned the transition from Oculus accounts; current buyers should follow current model-specific setup guidance.
- Not using the phone app guarantees no account is needed. Unsupported. Meta’s help hub covers mobile-app syncing, but the reviewed material does not establish a universal phone-free or account-free path.
Pre-purchase checklist
- Write down the actual constraint. Is it no Facebook, no social profile, no phone during setup, no company account, or no account of any kind? Each leads to a different answer.
- For Quest, budget for a Meta account. Treat it as part of personal ownership and app management.
- Decide on Facebook and Instagram separately. Leave them unlinked if you do not need their connected features.
- Review Horizon-profile privacy controls. Choose a username, display name, avatar, photo, and visibility settings intentionally.
- Confirm who owns purchases. The account that manages purchased apps should be the one you expect to keep using.
- If this is shared equipment, identify the owner. Organization-managed hardware may qualify for Shared Mode; a family purchase is not automatically an organization deployment.
- If you are borrowing, check guest controls. On Vision Pro, verify software versions, nearby-device conditions, and which apps expose personal information.
- For PlayStation VR, include the console. Original PS VR works with PS4 and PS5; PS VR2 requires PS5. Confirm account requirements separately rather than assuming they are absent.
- Recheck official setup pages immediately before purchase. Account policy, app flows, and software minimums can change by model, region, and date.
Bottom line for buyers
A personal Meta Quest is not documented as usable without a Meta account. It is documented as usable without linking Facebook or Instagram. The Meta account handles headset login and purchased-app management; the Horizon profile is the social identity layered on top; Facebook and Instagram are optional connections.
