Yes. Browser-based projects offer a Visual Basic 6-style coding experience, but they are independent implementations—not Microsoft’s original VB6 IDE running in a web page, nor proven drop-in replacements for existing VB6 applications. For browser-based experimentation, they may be useful; for maintaining a legacy project, check compatibility with its files, controls, APIs, and runtime before relying on one.
What “browser-native VB6 IDE” means
It means an IDE inspired by classic Visual Basic that runs in a browser. For example, VB6 Studio Web describes a browser environment built with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, alongside a source runtime and controls library. Its README explicitly says it is “Not a complete, native or pixel-identical Microsoft VB6 replacement.” That is the project’s own compatibility boundary, not an independent certification.
A browser implementation has a different execution model from Microsoft’s native VB6 compiler and runtime. Familiar syntax or control names alone do not establish that an old project will load, compile, or behave as it did in VB6. The project describes a source compiler/runtime and browser-based control implementations; installed COM/OCX execution is available only through an explicitly granted Windows companion, not as native binary execution in the browser.

Use a browser IDE when the goal is to write or try VB6-style code in a browser. If you need to maintain a real legacy application, evaluate project import, language behavior, control and API coverage, COM/OCX integrations, and compiled-binary behavior separately; “VB6-compatible” can refer to only some of these.

What Microsoft still supports
Microsoft distinguishes the VB6 IDE from the runtime. Its support statement says VB6 development is no longer supported and the IDE has been unsupported since April 8, 2008. Microsoft lists the IDE as unsupported on Windows 11. This does not mean every existing VB6 program stopped working: Microsoft says specified runtime files remain supported for the lifetime of supported Windows versions in which they ship, with support limited to serious regressions and critical security issues for existing applications.
Microsoft’s policy states: “Microsoft’s goal is “It Just Works” compatibility for pre-existing Visual Basic 6.0 applications on supported Windows versions.” That runtime compatibility statement is not support for creating or maintaining applications with the old IDE. VB6 runtime files remain 32-bit only; on 64-bit Windows, applications and runtime components are supported only in the WOW emulation environment, while the 32-bit IDE is not supported on 64-bit Windows.

How to choose a browser IDE for a real project
- Check project-file handling: Confirm whether the tool can open the project and form files you have, rather than assuming that VB6 syntax support includes project import.
- Check behavior, not just syntax: Identify the language features, controls, APIs, and COM/OCX components your application uses, then verify each one against the tool’s documentation.
- Understand where code runs: A web runtime or source interpreter is not the same as Microsoft’s native compiler and runtime. Ask how the tool executes and packages a project.
- Review browser data limits: The VB6 Studio Web project warns that browser origin policies can affect access to local files, clipboard features, and persistent storage. Keep independent backups of important work.
- Separate compatibility goals: If you need a more modern VB6/VBA-oriented development path, twinBASIC documents a backward-compatibility aim, but its beta status and non-browser description are material differences.
Bottom line
You can use a VB6-style IDE in a browser for browser-based development and experimentation. Treat it as a separate implementation unless its documentation and your own compatibility checks establish that it supports the particular legacy project you need. Microsoft’s support for specified runtime files on supported Windows versions should not be confused with support for the VB6 IDE.
