Yes. On a phone that supports dual SIM, you can install a travel eSIM for mobile data while leaving your regular line enabled. Your home number remains configured for calls and text messages, but that does not guarantee service in every destination or prevent roaming charges. Whether calls and SMS arrive depends on your phone model, carrier, plan, Wi-Fi calling support and the country you visit.
The safest arrangement is to assign the travel eSIM to cellular data, confirm your home carrier’s international terms, and test the two-line setup before departure. A travel eSIM can reduce data costs without automatically replacing your home number.
What “keep my home number active” actually means
When you leave your home line enabled, the line stays installed and registered on the phone. You can continue using its number for services such as account recovery, two-factor authentication, incoming calls and SMS when your carrier and destination support them. The line may also remain available for outgoing calls and messages if your plan allows international use.
Recommended Free Tools
Active does not mean free or universally reachable. Your home carrier can charge roaming fees while the line is switched on, even when another eSIM supplies your data. A country may have no roaming agreement for your carrier, or the phone may temporarily lose the home line’s service. If the home line has no network connection, an incoming call can go to voicemail rather than appearing on the handset.

Data-only travel eSIMs normally provide internet access, not your established home number. They do not automatically carry your carrier’s voice service, SMS inbox or account identity. Treat the travel eSIM and home line as two separate services with separate coverage and billing rules.
Check compatibility before buying a travel eSIM
Your phone must support the required SIM combination
Dual-SIM behavior differs by model, software version and regional edition. Apple documents that iPhone 13 and later can use two eSIMs, as well as a physical SIM plus an eSIM. Earlier iPhones and some regional variants can have different limits. These capabilities are examples, not a guarantee for every iPhone sold in every market.
Google’s Pixel guidance says Pixel 3a and later can use one physical SIM and one eSIM. Using two eSIMs at the same time requires Pixel 7 or later, carrier support and a compatible model. Check the specifications and support page for your exact Pixel before removing a physical SIM or purchasing a second eSIM.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe phone may need to be unlocked
A carrier-locked phone can reject an eSIM from a separate travel provider. Check the device’s SIM-lock or network-lock status and the carrier’s unlock policy before travel. An unlocked phone still needs compatible radio bands, a supported destination and a plan that works on local partner networks.

Confirm carrier and destination eligibility
- Verify that your home carrier permits international roaming in the destination.
- Check whether the travel eSIM covers the countries and territories on your itinerary, including transit stops.
- Read whether the travel plan is data-only or includes a local telephone number, voice and SMS.
- Check the plan’s allowance, validity period, activation conditions and network partners.
- Ask whether local registration or identity verification is required. Some jurisdictions require identification before an eSIM can be activated.
Set up the travel eSIM while retaining the home line
- Review the home plan. Ask the carrier whether calls, SMS, voicemail, mobile data and incoming texts incur roaming charges in each destination. Check for an international pass or an included roaming allowance. Do not assume that disabling home-line data eliminates every possible voice or SMS fee.
- Confirm the phone is unlocked and compatible. Check the exact model, operating-system version, eSIM limit and supported combinations. Install pending system updates before leaving reliable Wi-Fi.
- Purchase a plan that matches the trip. Compare coverage, data volume, duration, activation timing and whether a local number is included. A worldwide plan may advertise coverage in “over 190 countries or regions,” but that description does not guarantee that every individual plan works in every listed place.
- Install the eSIM. Follow the travel provider’s instructions. Activation may use a QR code, an app or a carrier download. Keep the QR code and confirmation details available until installation is complete.
- Label the lines clearly. Use labels such as “Home” and “Travel” so that calls, messages and data settings are easy to identify. A mistaken line selection can cause unintended roaming.
- Choose the travel line for cellular data. This is the key control that makes the travel eSIM the normal internet connection. Leave the home line enabled only if you want its number available and have accepted the carrier’s roaming terms.
- Review switching controls. Turn off automatic data switching unless you deliberately want the phone to use the home line when the travel line loses service. Automatic switching can create unexpected home-line data usage.
- Test before departure. With both lines enabled, place a test call, send an SMS, receive an SMS and open a webpage using the travel line. Test again at the destination because partner-network behavior can differ by country.
iPhone settings and limitations
Choose the line for data
On an iPhone, open Settings > Cellular (or Settings > Mobile Data in some regions), select cellular-data settings and choose the travel eSIM. Apple’s current iOS 26 flow may present options labelled Travel eSIM Only or Travel eSIM and Current eSIM. Labels can change with the iOS release, region and installed lines.
Keep the home line turned on if you need its number for calls or SMS. The travel line can be the only line used for data, or it can be enabled alongside the current eSIM. Review the data-roaming switch for each line and confirm that roaming is disabled on the home line if your carrier recommends that control.
Understand call behavior during another call
iPhone uses Dual SIM Dual Standby. Only one number uses cellular data as the default at a time. Receiving a call on the other number while you are already on a call depends on carrier Wi-Fi calling and the phone’s settings. If the other line has no service, an incoming call may be sent to voicemail. This behavior is separate from whether the travel eSIM can provide data.
Apple explicitly warns that keeping both lines on can still produce home-line roaming charges. Its guidance states: “If you choose to use both lines, your travel eSIM will be used for data. You might still incur roaming fees from your home eSIM.” Contact the home carrier for the applicable rates or a travel pass before relying on the line abroad.

Google Pixel settings and limitations
Select travel data on Pixel
On supported Pixel phones, open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs. Choose the travel eSIM for mobile data, then set your preferred SIM for calls and texts. Google’s guidance summarizes the data rule as: “Only one SIM can be the default for data.” The available controls and wording can vary by Android version and country.
Keep the home SIM enabled for its number, and check whether automatic data switching is active. If it is enabled, the phone may move data to the home SIM when the travel line has a weak connection. Turn it off when avoiding home-line roaming is more important than maintaining data at all times.
Pixel call handling varies by model
Google’s documentation says Pixel 8 and earlier models listed in its guidance cannot receive a call on the other SIM while you are already on a call. Pixel 8a and later can support a dual-call flow when specific requirements are met, including mobile data enabled on both SIMs, automatic data switching and carrier Wi-Fi calling. These are model-specific conditions, not a universal Android feature.

Because dual-call behavior depends on the carrier as well as the phone, test an incoming call to the home number while using the travel line before you depend on it for urgent communication.

Will calls and text messages still arrive?
SMS and verification codes
Incoming SMS can work while the home line is abroad, but only when the carrier has roaming service in that destination and the phone can register on a partner network. Some carriers charge for received or sent texts; others include certain messages. Banking and account-recovery codes may be delayed or blocked by carrier security rules, so test the specific services you need.
Incoming and outgoing calls
Calls to the home number use the home carrier’s roaming service unless they arrive through a supported Wi-Fi-calling configuration. The travel eSIM’s data connection does not by itself make those calls free. Outgoing calls can be billed as international or roaming calls, depending on the number dialled and your plan.
Wi-Fi calling is a separate dependency
Wi-Fi calling can help the home line work when cellular roaming is unavailable, but it must be supported by the carrier, enabled on the line and permitted in the destination. Some phones need the travel line’s data connection or a Wi-Fi network to route the call. Do not assume that Wi-Fi calling will work merely because the phone has the feature.
Travel eSIM versus the home carrier’s roaming option
Both approaches can keep your established number available, but they solve different problems. The home carrier’s pass is usually simpler for one-line billing and support. A separate prepaid eSIM can provide a larger or cheaper data allowance while the home line remains installed for calls and SMS.

| Decision point | Home-carrier roaming plan or pass | Separate prepaid travel eSIM |
|---|---|---|
| Number retention | Uses the existing home number directly. | Home number stays on the home line; the travel eSIM may be data-only or may include a different local number. |
| Data billing | Added to the home carrier account under its roaming terms. | Billed by the travel-eSIM provider under its allowance and validity rules. |
| Coverage | Depends on the home carrier’s roaming partners in each destination. | Depends on the travel plan’s listed countries, local networks and activation terms. |
| Voice and SMS | Home-line voice and SMS follow the carrier’s international policy. | Often data-only; voice or SMS requires a plan that explicitly includes those services. |
| Activation | Often enabled through the existing carrier account or support channel. | Usually installed digitally through a QR code or app; local identification can be required. |
| Cost exposure | Roaming fees can apply to data, calls or messages according to the home plan. | Prepaid pricing limits the travel plan’s charge, but home-line roaming fees can still occur while that line is enabled. |
Compare the total cost, not only the advertised data price. Include the home line’s standby roaming risk, the cost of calls and SMS, validity dates, top-up rules and any activation fee.
How to choose the right travel plan
For data only
A data-only plan is suitable when you use internet calling or messaging services and do not need a local telephone number. Keep the home line available for important SMS only after checking the carrier’s charges. Disable home-line data and automatic switching to prevent accidental usage.
For a local number
If hotels, restaurants, delivery services or local contacts require a domestic number, choose a plan that explicitly includes voice and SMS and states the number’s country. A data allowance alone does not provide that capability.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

For several countries
Check each border crossing and the plan’s validity clock. Some plans begin when installed; others begin when they first connect to a covered network. A plan advertised for many countries can still have different partner networks, speeds or restrictions in each location.
For heavy data use
Look at the full allowance, throttling policy, hotspot support and expiration date. A short-validity plan may be poor value for a long trip even if its initial price is low.
Troubleshooting common failures
The travel eSIM is installed but has no data
- Confirm the travel line is turned on and selected under mobile data.
- Check that the plan has started, has remaining allowance and covers the current country.
- Turn off automatic data switching if the phone is selecting the home line.
- Restart the phone after installation and verify the required network or access-point settings from the provider.
The home number cannot receive calls or SMS
- Check that the home line is enabled and shows network registration.
- Confirm international roaming or Wi-Fi calling is supported for the destination.
- Verify that call forwarding, voicemail and carrier-level blocks are not redirecting messages.
- Try a test SMS and call from another phone; service may fail on one partner network while working on another.
Unexpected roaming charges appear
- Review which line was selected for mobile data and whether automatic switching was enabled.
- Check outgoing calls, sent SMS, voicemail retrieval and background data on the home line.
- Ask the carrier to explain the charge and request a roaming block if you do not need home-line service.
Before-you-fly checklist
- Record the exact phone model, software version and eSIM limit.
- Confirm the phone is unlocked for a separate travel provider.
- Check destination coverage and the home carrier’s roaming terms.
- Install and label the travel eSIM over dependable Wi-Fi.
- Select the travel line for mobile data and review automatic switching.
- Keep the home line enabled only when its availability justifies possible charges.
- Test data, an incoming call, an outgoing call and an SMS before departure.
- Save carrier support details and the eSIM activation instructions offline.
Bottom line
A compatible, unlocked dual-SIM phone can use a travel eSIM for data while keeping your home number enabled. The arrangement is practical, but it is not a roaming workaround: the home carrier can still charge for service, and calls or SMS may fail when the carrier, destination, device or Wi-Fi-calling setup does not support them. Set the travel eSIM as the data line, verify every roaming term with the home carrier, and test the exact phone-and-plan combination before relying on it abroad.
