Yes—but only when that specific Qi2 power bank supports pass-through charging. Pass-through lets the bank recharge through USB-C while it wirelessly charges a phone. Qi2 branding by itself does not guarantee the feature. Check the exact model’s manual or manufacturer FAQ for simultaneous charging, reduced output and temperature limits before using it this way.
What “using it while charging” means
A power bank has two separate electrical jobs: receiving energy through its USB-C input and delivering energy through its wireless charging coil. With pass-through charging, the electronics are designed to perform both jobs at once. You connect a USB-C charger to the bank, place a compatible phone on its magnetic charging surface, and the bank accepts input while sending wireless power to the phone.
Without pass-through support, connecting the USB-C cable may charge only the bank, stop wireless output, or prevent the bank from charging at all until the phone is removed. That behavior is controlled by the product’s firmware, power-management circuitry and thermal protection—not by the Qi2 label alone.
Qi2 is a wireless-charging standard. It addresses interoperability, magnetic alignment and safety characteristics, while pass-through is a separate feature that each manufacturer must implement and document. The Wireless Power Consortium explains Qi certification and safety on its consumer site, but you still need the exact battery bank’s instructions for simultaneous input and output: Wireless Power Consortium Qi consumer guidance.

How to check whether your Qi2 bank supports pass-through
- Identify the exact model. Read the model code on the rear label, packaging or regulatory marking. A product family can contain versions with different power-management behavior.
- Open the current manual or support page. Search within it for “pass-through,” “simultaneous charging,” “charge and use,” or “recharge while charging a device.” Do not rely on a retailer’s generic Qi2 description.
- Confirm both directions of power. The documentation should state that the USB-C input can recharge the bank while the wireless pad is charging a device. A statement that the bank can charge a phone wirelessly is not enough.
- Look for simultaneous-use output. Some banks reduce wireless output when their own battery is charging. Record the reduced wattage and treat it as the expected behavior, not a defect.
- Check input and thermal conditions. The manual may specify a USB-C charger requirement, prohibit use in high temperatures, or disable pass-through when the electronics become too warm or the available input power is insufficient.
- Verify phone and case compatibility. Magnetic alignment, Qi generation, case thickness and metal accessories can determine whether charging starts or overheats.
If the instructions do not explicitly permit pass-through, assume that the feature is unsupported. Qi2 certification alone is not evidence that the bank will accept input and produce wireless output simultaneously.

Belkin’s FAQ states: “The power banks are charged using the USB-C port. They support pass-through charging that lets you charge your device and recharge the power bank at the same time.” That answer is attached to models BPD006, BPD007 and BPD008, not to every magnetic battery bank sold under the same general category: Belkin support FAQ.

Expect slower wireless charging during pass-through
Pass-through does not promise the bank’s maximum advertised wireless rate. The bank must divide incoming power among the phone, battery charging and its own conversion losses. It may also reserve power for thermal management.
The clearest documented example is the Clas Ohlson HKPB1562-050C: its manual says wireless charging is reduced to 5W when the bank is charging at the same time. That is a safety limit for that model, not a universal Qi2 specification. Read the manual at Clas Ohlson’s product manual.
Other products may show a different reduction, negotiate a lower rate dynamically, or stop wireless output altogether. A phone that displays “charging” may therefore gain battery slowly while the bank is plugged in. If you need the fastest possible wireless charging, recharge the bank first and use it afterward.

Heat, foreign objects and cases
Wireless charging already produces more heat than a direct cable connection because energy crosses an air gap and the coils must remain aligned. Simultaneous charging adds another conversion process inside the bank. Warmth is therefore possible, but excessive heat is a reason to stop and investigate.

Qi Certified products are described by the Wireless Power Consortium as protected from heat and capable of detecting foreign objects on the charger: Qi consumer safety guidance. This does not establish a universal operating temperature or guarantee that every product marketed with Qi2 wording has identical protections. Confirm certification and protections for the exact item.
Xiaomi identifies several factors that can increase warmth:
- Metal objects between the phone and charging surface, including coins, keys or magnetic plates.
- A case that is too thick or contains metal.
- High ambient temperature or poor ventilation.
- Misalignment that makes the charging system work inefficiently.
For the Xiaomi magnetic power banks covered by its FAQ, the company recommends a non-metal case no thicker than 2mm. It specifically lists iPhone 12, 13, 14 and 15 series phones that support magnetic wireless charging; compatibility with other phone models is not guaranteed by that statement.

If the bank or phone becomes uncomfortably hot, remove the phone, unplug the USB-C cable and let both devices cool on a hard, uncovered surface.

Safe setup: charge the bank and phone together
- Use the specified USB-C charger and cable. Follow the bank’s input rating. An underpowered adapter can trigger a power-limit condition, while an unsuitable adapter may create unnecessary heat.
- Place the bank on a cool, ventilated surface. Avoid beds, couches, direct sunlight, dashboards and enclosed bags while both devices are operating.
- Remove metal objects. Keep keys, coins, magnetic plates and metal card holders away from the charging interface.
- Fit the phone or case correctly. Use a compatible magnetic alignment system. If the manufacturer gives a case limit—Xiaomi’s guidance is a non-metal case up to 2mm for its documented banks—follow it.
- Connect USB-C to the bank. Wait for its indicator to show that the battery is charging.
- Attach the phone to the wireless pad. Check that the phone reports charging and that the bank’s indicator remains in its normal charging state.
- Monitor the first session. After several minutes, check for abnormal heat, repeated connect-and-disconnect sounds, warning lights or a falling rather than rising phone battery percentage.
- Stop if protection activates. Disconnect the phone and allow the bank to cool. If the manual says pass-through is disabled under thermal or power limits, charge the bank by itself before trying again.
Why pass-through may not work
The bank charges, but the phone does not
The product may not support simultaneous output, or it may have disabled wireless charging because the incoming USB-C power is insufficient. Remove the phone, let the bank reach a partial charge, then check the manual’s pass-through instructions. If the documentation does not promise the feature, use the bank sequentially.
The phone charges, but the bank percentage does not rise
Wireless output and conversion losses can consume most or all of the incoming power. A low-power adapter, a high phone load or a reduced-output safety mode can make the bank recharge very slowly. Use the manufacturer’s recommended input and test with the phone screen off. Do not interpret slow progress as proof that the bank is defective.
Charging repeatedly starts and stops
Check magnetic alignment, remove metal accessories and try a thinner non-metal case. Excess heat, unstable input power and foreign-object detection can all interrupt charging. Xiaomi specifically recommends checking the case, metal objects and ambient temperature when warmth is excessive.

Some products deliberately disable pass-through for thermal or power reasons. Noise’s help guidance identifies those limits and recommends charging the power bank first: Noise pass-through support article. Follow that product-specific instruction rather than repeatedly reconnecting the cable.

A warning indicator appears
Consult the indicator table in the manual. Xiaomi says a rapidly flashing red indicator on its 6000mAh model signals over-temperature protection. Disconnect the phone, unplug the bank and cool it before retrying. If the warning returns in a normal environment with no metal objects, stop using the simultaneous mode and contact the manufacturer.
When simultaneous charging is useful
Pass-through is practical at a desk, airport seat or hotel room when one USB-C outlet needs to serve both devices. You can leave the phone aligned on the bank while the bank replenishes, reducing the number of separate charging sessions.
It is less useful when you need maximum speed, when the environment is hot, or when the phone is performing demanding tasks. In those situations, charge the bank and phone separately, or connect the phone directly to a wall charger. The documented output reduction on the Clas Ohlson model demonstrates that simultaneous operation can be intentionally slower.
How to compare Qi2 power banks for this feature
Compare the exact model documentation rather than the marketing category. A useful checklist includes:
- Explicit pass-through or simultaneous-charging support.
- Wireless output while USB-C input is active.
- USB-C input rating and required charger type.
- Phone models and Qi generations covered by the manufacturer.
- Maximum case thickness and restrictions on metal accessories.
- Thermal protections, foreign-object detection and status-indicator meanings.
- Conditions that disable pass-through and the recommended recovery procedure.
There is no universal pass-through rating for all Qi2 banks. Treat each manufacturer’s limits as controlling for that model, and do not assume that a newer Qi2 logo means the bank can recharge and wirelessly charge at full speed at the same time.
Bottom line
You can use a Qi2 power bank while charging it when the exact bank supports pass-through charging. Verify that feature in the manual, expect wireless output to change on some models, keep the phone and pad free of metal and excess heat, and charge the bank by itself whenever its protection system disables simultaneous use.
