No. An original PlayStation 2 controller is not compatible with a standard PS5, and a PS2-to-USB adapter does not add PS2-game support to the console. Sony documents PS5 backward compatibility for the overwhelming majority of PS4 games—not native PS2 software—and its PS5 Safety Guide specifically excludes DUALSHOCK and DUALSHOCK 2 controllers.
If you want to play a particular PS2 title, first check for an official PS4 or PS5 port, remaster or other release. Run that supported version with the controller Sony documents for its platform. If no such release exists, you need PS2 hardware or another separately configured, legally appropriate platform; an adapter alone cannot bridge the software gap.
The short answer: the controller and the game are two separate compatibility problems
People often ask whether a USB adapter can make a PS2 controller work on a PS5. That question combines two different layers:

- Software compatibility: whether the PS5 can install and run the PS2 game itself.
Solving only the first layer would not make the second layer work. Sony’s published PS5 support material identifies PS4 backward compatibility, not a general PS2 compatibility mode. The console can therefore reject an original PS2 controller and still have no way to launch a PS2 disc or digital package that has not been released for PS5.

A generic converter changes the plug or translates controller signals. It does not supply the PS2 game code, a PS2 operating environment or Sony’s platform authorization for unsupported software.
What Sony officially supports on PS5
PS4 games running on PS5
Sony’s PS5 backward-compatibility page says the console works with the overwhelming majority of PS4 games—more than 4,000 titles in Sony Interactive Entertainment’s 2020/current published figure. That number describes PS4 compatibility only; it is not a count of PS2 games supported on PS5.
For a supported PS4 game running on PS5, Sony lists three controller categories:
- DualSense wireless controllers
- DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controllers
- Officially licensed third-party gamepads
The specific game still matters. A title can be supported by the console while a particular accessory is not, so the game and accessory documentation should be checked separately.
Native PS5 games
Sony states that PS5 games can only be played with DualSense wireless controllers. A DUALSHOCK 2, a DUALSHOCK 3 and an unapproved adapter are not converted into DualSense devices merely by plugging them into USB.

What Sony excludes
The PS5 Safety Guide states: “Controllers intended for use with PlayStation®, PlayStation®2, and PlayStation®3 consoles, such as the analogue controllers (DUALSHOCK® and DUALSHOCK®2) and the DUALSHOCK®3 wireless controller, are not compatible with the PS5 console.” That wording covers the original PS2 controller you may know as DUALSHOCK 2. It is not a statement that only wireless pairing is unavailable; the controller is outside the PS5’s supported controller family.
Why a PS2-to-USB adapter does not create PS2 backward compatibility
USB is only the connection, not a compatibility guarantee
A PS2-to-USB lead or converter can present a PS2 controller’s signals over USB. The PS5 must still recognize the attached device as an accepted game controller, and the running game must accept the resulting inputs. Neither condition is guaranteed by the presence of a USB plug.
More importantly, the adapter has no role in loading a PS2 game. It cannot turn a PS2 disc drive into a PS5 feature, install a missing PS2 emulator, or make a PS2 license appear in the PS5 software library. If the console does not support the title, changing the controller connection leaves the software problem untouched.
Adapters have a direction
Before buying any converter, identify which console is the host and which controller is the accessory. A product advertised for “modern controller on PS2” performs the opposite job from “PS2 controller on PS5.” A converter can be perfectly functional in its intended direction and useless in the reverse direction.
That distinction is important for Brook’s Wingman PS2. Brook places it in its retro-console converter range for PS2/PS1 hardware. Its documented purpose is to let supported modern controllers operate on those older consoles. It is not documented as a PS5 accessory for a DUALSHOCK 2, and it does not add PS2 games to a PS5.

Compatibility lists are not universal guarantees
Brook’s Wingman PS2 FAQ says that its list contains controller and stick models tested to work with the converter; devices not listed may be incompatible or simply not tested. Even a controller that appears on an adapter’s list is not thereby approved for every console. The host-console specification, the adapter’s intended direction and the game’s own controller requirements all remain relevant.

Choose the correct path for the game you want to play
- Identify the software release. Determine whether you own a native PS2 disc, a PS2 download, or a separately published PS4/PS5 version. A title’s name alone is not enough; different releases can have different platform support.
- Check the PlayStation Store or the publisher’s release information for an official PS4 or PS5 version. Look for a port, remaster or other release explicitly sold for the newer console. Do not infer compatibility from the fact that another game in the same series runs on PS5.
- Match the controller to that release. Use DualSense for a native PS5 game. For a supported PS4 game on PS5, Sony documents DualSense, DUALSHOCK 4 and officially licensed third-party gamepads.
- If it is only a PS2 release, stop treating an adapter as the solution. Use original or compatible PS2 hardware, or another separately configured and legally appropriate platform that actually supports the title. A USB converter can change input wiring but cannot supply the missing game support on an unmodified PS5.
- Check accessories independently. If you are considering a third-party controller or converter for a supported PS4 release, verify that it is officially licensed or otherwise documented for that host and game. For a retro converter, read the manufacturer’s tested-device list and confirm that the product is designed for your console direction.

How to check whether your PS2 game has a usable PS5 alternative
Start with the exact edition
Write down the title, region and format you have. A PS2 disc is not automatically the same product as a later digital remaster. Search the PlayStation Store on the console or the publisher’s official product page for an edition explicitly marked PS4 or PS5. If the listing names only PS2, assume the PS5 does not run it unless Sony or the publisher separately documents support.
Check the controller requirement on the newer release
When a PS4 port runs on PS5, the relevant question is no longer “Can the PS5 read my PS2 pad?” It is “Which controller does this supported PS4 release accept?” Sony’s documented choices are DualSense, DUALSHOCK 4 and officially licensed third-party gamepads. If a game has been rebuilt as a native PS5 title, use DualSense.
Do not confuse a remaster with backward compatibility
A remaster or port is a new, separately supported release. It may have different menus, performance, trophies, downloadable content or controller behavior from the original PS2 version. Buying or launching that newer edition is what supplies the supported software path; an adapter is not what performs the conversion.
Common purchase mistakes and how to avoid them
“It has USB, so the PS5 will accept it”
USB describes the connector, not Sony’s compatibility decision. The PS5 Safety Guide’s exclusion of DUALSHOCK and DUALSHOCK 2 remains relevant even when a cable or adapter ends in USB.

“A PS2 adapter should work because it says PlayStation”
Read the host-console wording. A converter built for PS2/PS1 hardware may be intended to put a modern controller on an old console. That is the reverse of putting a PS2 controller on a PS5. Product families often contain similar names for different directions, so verify the exact model and supported host before purchase.
“The adapter list includes my controller, so any PlayStation will work”
A tested-device list applies to the converter and host for which it was published. Brook’s FAQ warns that an unlisted controller may be incompatible or merely untested; it does not promise operation on PS5.
“Sony supports thousands of games, so PS2 games must be included”
Sony’s more-than-4,000 figure is for PS4 games playable on PS5. It should not be read as a PS2 catalog or as evidence that PS2 discs and downloads are generally supported.

The PS5 does not respond to a DUALSHOCK 2
That behavior is consistent with Sony’s stated incompatibility. Try no sequence of pairing, rebooting or USB-port changes expecting to turn it into a supported PS5 controller. Switch to DualSense for PS5 software, or to a controller Sony documents for the supported PS4 release you are playing.

Power or an illuminated indicator only shows that the adapter is receiving electricity. Confirm three things in order: the game is a supported PS4 or PS5 release, the adapter is designed for the PS5 host rather than PS2/PS1 hardware, and the controller is in the adapter’s tested list. If the product’s documented direction is modern controller to PS2, it is not the right device for a PS2 controller to PS5.

The PS2 disc will not launch
No controller converter can change the PS5’s software catalog. Look for an official PS4/PS5 port or remaster. Without one, move the disc to PS2 hardware or another platform that explicitly supports that release.
A third-party pad works in one game but not another
Check whether the games are native PS5 titles or supported PS4 titles. Sony’s controller guidance differs by generation: native PS5 games require DualSense, while supported PS4 games have the broader documented controller set. A controller working with one supported PS4 game does not establish support for every title or for native PS5 software.
What you actually need to buy or connect
- For a native PS5 version: a DualSense wireless controller.
- For a supported PS4 version on PS5: DualSense, DUALSHOCK 4 or an officially licensed third-party gamepad, subject to the game’s support.
- For an original PS2 release: PS2 hardware and the appropriate controller, or another separately configured, legally appropriate platform that explicitly supports the game.
- For a retro converter: only purchase after confirming the host console, controller direction and tested-device list. A PS2/PS1 converter is not a PS5 backward-compatibility upgrade.
Do not spend money on a generic PS2-to-USB adapter expecting it to unlock PS2 software on PS5. At most, such a device addresses signal conversion; it does not alter Sony’s supported software and controller boundaries.

Bottom line for the most common questions
An original PS2 controller cannot be used with a standard PS5 according to Sony’s safety documentation. A PS2-to-USB adapter does not change that, and it cannot make native PS2 games run. Brook Wingman PS2 is aimed at using modern controllers with PS2/PS1 hardware, so it is the wrong direction for this request. The workable route is to find an official PS4 or PS5 release of the game and use the controller Sony documents for that release; otherwise, play the original PS2 version on PS2 hardware or another platform that explicitly supports it.
