Short answer: not through Chromebook’s built-in phone connection or its normal Bluetooth pairing screen. Google’s documented Phone Hub features handle notifications, photos, messages, tethering and unlocking, but do not turn a phone into a Chromebook cursor or keyboard. Google Chromebook Help also states, “You can’t pair your phone to your Chromebook with Bluetooth.”
If you need dependable input, use a Bluetooth mouse, Bluetooth keyboard, or a keyboard with an integrated touchpad that your Chromebook supports. Apps such as KDE Connect advertise remote-input features, but the available documentation does not establish that those features control the ChromeOS desktop, so treat that route as experimental rather than a guaranteed fix.
What you can and cannot do
A phone can connect to a Chromebook for several useful phone-integration features, but that connection is different from remote input. ChromeOS does not document a supported setting that lets you move the Chromebook pointer by sliding a finger on your phone or type Chromebook text from a phone keyboard.
- Documented: connecting an Android phone for notifications, recent photos, messages, tethering and phone-based unlocking.
- Not documented: using the phone display as a trackpad, using the phone keyboard as a Chromebook keyboard, or sending mouse clicks from the phone to ChromeOS.
- Blocked in the ordinary pairing flow: pairing a phone to a Chromebook as a Bluetooth peripheral.
- Supported alternative: compatible Bluetooth keyboards and mice.
That distinction matters because an app may show a “remote mouse” or “touchpad” feature without having a connection path that ChromeOS accepts for desktop control. Installing a phone app alone cannot overcome the Chromebook’s device-pairing rules.

Why Phone Hub does not turn your phone into an input device
Phone Hub is Google’s built-in connection between a Chromebook and an Android phone. Google documents it for practical hand-off and communication tasks: seeing phone notifications, accessing recent photos, handling messages, sharing a phone connection through tethering and unlocking the Chromebook when the phone is nearby.
Those features do not include a virtual mouse or keyboard. The phone remains a connected companion, not a Bluetooth Human Interface Device (HID) that ChromeOS can use for pointer movement and keystrokes. Opening Phone Hub and enabling every available option therefore will not create a cursor-control panel.
Compatibility requirements for the documented phone connection
Google lists ChromeOS 71 or later and Android 6 or later for the documented connected-phone features. These versions describe Phone Hub compatibility; they are not requirements for remote mouse or keyboard input, because Google does not document that input function.
How to connect a phone for Phone Hub features
- On the Chromebook, open Settings.
- Open the section for Connected devices and choose the Android-phone connection option.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to select the phone and approve the requested permissions on both devices.
- Open the phone controls from the Chromebook shelf or Settings to use the features Google provides, such as notifications, photos, messages, tethering or unlocking.
If the phone connects successfully but no mouse or keyboard control appears, that is expected. Phone Hub has connected the devices for its supported functions; it has not installed a remote-input service.
The Bluetooth limitation is decisive
Google Chromebook Help gives a direct rule: “You can’t pair your phone to your Chromebook with Bluetooth.” The same guidance separately identifies keyboards and mice as device categories compatible Chromebooks can connect to, assuming the particular Chromebook supports Bluetooth and the peripheral is compatible.

The USB receiver is not on the bottom of the mouse, and in opening the box, there are two slots next to the mouse dedicated to the receiver.
This rules out the most common proposed workaround: installing a phone-side app that claims to emulate a Bluetooth mouse or keyboard, then trying to add the phone from Settings > Bluetooth on the Chromebook. The normal ChromeOS pairing flow will not accept the phone as that peripheral.
What the normal pairing screen is for
Use the Chromebook’s Bluetooth screen for supported accessories such as a mouse, keyboard, headphones or other compatible devices. A phone may have Bluetooth hardware, but that does not make it pairable as a Chromebook input accessory. Bluetooth capability on both devices is not the same as support for every Bluetooth profile.

- Repeatedly toggling Bluetooth on the phone and Chromebook will not change Google’s phone-pairing restriction.
- Changing the phone’s Bluetooth name, visibility or pairing PIN does not make it a supported ChromeOS mouse or keyboard.
- Installing multiple “phone as mouse” apps does not bypass the Chromebook’s requirement for a supported connection method.
- Phone Hub and Bluetooth pairing are separate systems; fixing one does not add remote input to the other.
Method comparison
The realistic choices differ in both support status and reliability. The table separates what is officially documented from what an app advertises.
| Method | Officially documented for ChromeOS input? | Extra computer-side software | Expected reliability | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Phone Hub | No; documentation covers phone-integration features, not cursor or text input. | No separate remote-input app. | Reliable for its documented features, not for mouse or keyboard control. | Notifications, photos, messages, tethering and unlocking. |
| Phone paired through Chromebook Bluetooth | No. Google says a phone cannot be paired to a Chromebook with Bluetooth. | Not applicable. | Unavailable through the ordinary pairing flow. | Do not use this as a troubleshooting path. |
| KDE Connect | Not established by the available ChromeOS documentation. | Yes. The Android app says a computer companion is required. | Conditional and unverified for controlling the ChromeOS desktop. | Experimenting only when you can tolerate setup and failure. |
| Compatible Bluetooth mouse | Yes, as a supported peripheral category on compatible Chromebooks. | No phone app; pair the mouse directly. | Dependable when compatible and charged. | Pointer movement, clicking and scrolling. |
| Compatible Bluetooth keyboard | Yes, as a supported peripheral category on compatible Chromebooks. | No phone app; pair the keyboard directly. | Dependable when compatible and charged. | Typing and keyboard shortcuts. |
| Keyboard with integrated touchpad | The keyboard and mouse functions follow the Chromebook’s support for those peripheral categories. | No phone app; pair the unit directly. | One-device solution, subject to compatibility. | Getting both typing and pointer control without buying two accessories. |
Try the supported phone connection first—without expecting input
If your immediate goal is to use phone features on the Chromebook, set up Phone Hub. This also confirms whether the devices meet Google’s documented version and account requirements, but it does not test mouse or keyboard support.
- Update the Chromebook and Android phone if updates are available. The documented minimums are ChromeOS 71 and Android 6.
- On the Chromebook, open Settings, then Connected devices, and start the Android-phone setup.
- Choose the phone shown by ChromeOS and complete the approval prompts on the phone.
- Check the connected-phone controls for the features you actually need: notifications, photos, messages, tethering or unlocking.
- Stop looking for a hidden trackpad or keyboard switch. No such Phone Hub control is documented by Google.
If your account is managed by a school or employer, an administrator may disable some connected-device features. That can affect Phone Hub availability, but enabling those features still would not create remote input.

Use a Bluetooth mouse or keyboard for reliable control
When you need a cursor or physical typing, the dependable route is a peripheral that ChromeOS supports directly. Google’s Bluetooth guidance includes keyboards and mice among compatible device categories.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePair a Bluetooth mouse
- Turn on the mouse and put it into pairing mode according to its instructions.
- On the Chromebook, open Settings and select Bluetooth.
- Turn Bluetooth on if it is off, then select the mouse when it appears in the available-devices list.
- Accept any pairing prompt and move the mouse to confirm pointer control.
If the mouse does not appear, charge it, leave pairing mode and re-enter it, move it close to the Chromebook, and remove an old pairing from the mouse if its memory is full. A Chromebook may also fail to list a device that uses a proprietary receiver instead of standard Bluetooth; check the accessory’s connection type.
Pair a Bluetooth keyboard
- Turn on the keyboard and activate its pairing mode.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth on the Chromebook.
- Select the keyboard from the list.
- If ChromeOS displays a numeric code, type that code on the physical keyboard and press Enter.
- Open a text field and type a short test sentence.
Keyboard layouts can differ by language or region. If symbols appear in unexpected places, check the Chromebook’s keyboard-language setting rather than assuming the Bluetooth connection failed.
Use one device for both jobs
A Bluetooth keyboard with an integrated touchpad can provide typing and pointer control in one accessory. This is an editorially practical category, not an endorsement of a particular model. Verify that the product uses Bluetooth, not only a USB receiver, and confirm that your Chromebook supports Bluetooth peripherals before buying.
What KDE Connect can—and cannot—establish
The Android listing for KDE Connect advertises a virtual touchpad and says that a computer companion app is required. That makes it a potential remote-input tool in supported computer setups. KDE’s project documentation discusses Linux desktop support, while Google describes Chromebook Linux as a sandboxed development environment.

Those facts do not establish that KDE Connect’s remote input controls the ChromeOS desktop. Running the Linux environment on a Chromebook is not the same as giving a Linux application permission to move the cursor in the ChromeOS user interface. The available documentation therefore does not support a verified Chromebook recipe.
If you decide to experiment
- Read the app’s current compatibility information and install the computer companion only if you understand that ChromeOS desktop control is unverified.
- Use a trusted network and review the permissions requested by both the phone app and computer component.
- Keep a physical keyboard, mouse or the Chromebook’s built-in controls available so you can recover if pairing or input capture fails.
- Do not treat a successful device connection, file transfer or notification feature as proof that remote cursor control works.
- Remove the companion software and revoke permissions if it does not provide the input behavior you need.
A successful experiment on a particular Chromebook model, ChromeOS channel or Linux configuration should not be generalized to every Chromebook. ChromeOS updates, administrator policies and hardware differences can change the result.

“My phone connects, but I cannot move the cursor.”
This is the expected result of Phone Hub. Confirm that you are using the connection for notifications, photos, messages, tethering or unlocking. For cursor control, switch to a supported mouse or a keyboard with an integrated touchpad.
“The Chromebook cannot find my phone in Bluetooth.”
That is not normally a discovery failure. Google’s rule is that a phone cannot be paired to a Chromebook with Bluetooth. Use the phone through Phone Hub for its documented functions, or pair a compatible keyboard or mouse instead.
“A phone mouse app says it is connected, but ChromeOS does nothing.”
The app may have established a network or companion connection without obtaining control of the ChromeOS desktop. Check whether the developer explicitly supports ChromeOS desktop input; do not assume that Android, Linux or another desktop result transfers to Chromebook.

“My Bluetooth keyboard or mouse will not pair.”
- Confirm Bluetooth is enabled in Chromebook Settings.
- Put the accessory into pairing mode rather than merely turning it on.
- Charge the accessory or replace its batteries.
- Move it close to the Chromebook and temporarily turn off nearby devices that may reconnect to it.
- Remove an obsolete entry from the Chromebook’s Bluetooth list, restart both devices, and try again.
- Check whether the accessory requires a USB receiver, a proprietary driver or an operating system feature that ChromeOS does not provide.
- On a managed Chromebook, ask the administrator whether Bluetooth accessories are restricted.
“I need input immediately and have no accessory.”
Use the Chromebook’s built-in keyboard and touchpad, touchscreen or accessibility controls if available. Phone Hub cannot substitute for those controls. If the built-in hardware has failed, borrowing a compatible Bluetooth mouse, keyboard or combined keyboard-touchpad is more predictable than attempting an unsupported phone-emulation setup.
Security and privacy considerations
Remote-input software can receive keystrokes, pointer events or network access, so treat it as privileged software. Install only from a source you trust, read the permissions, and avoid using an experimental setup for passwords, banking or other sensitive work until you understand exactly where the input travels.
Phone Hub has a narrower documented purpose and uses the Chromebook’s account and device settings. Even so, review notification and message permissions if other people can see the Chromebook screen. Disconnect the phone or turn off individual Phone Hub features when you are using a shared Chromebook.

- You want notifications, photos, messages, tethering or unlocking: set up Phone Hub.
- You want a reliable pointer: pair a compatible Bluetooth mouse.
- You want reliable typing: pair a compatible Bluetooth keyboard.
- You want both in one accessory: consider a Bluetooth keyboard with an integrated touchpad, after checking Chromebook compatibility.
- You want to experiment with software: KDE Connect is a conditional lead that requires a computer companion; ChromeOS desktop control is not established, so keep a fallback.
- You want to pair the phone directly over Bluetooth: do not pursue this route; Google explicitly says it is not supported.
The practical answer is therefore a change of device category: use the phone for the connected-phone features ChromeOS documents, and use a supported Bluetooth input peripheral when you need a mouse or keyboard.
