Sometimes—but a digital driver licence is not accepted everywhere, and the way you display it matters. As of 7 October 2026, South Australia, New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria offer digital driver licence services. Each licence is still issued and governed by its jurisdiction; national standards are intended to make credentials easier to verify across borders, not to create one national licence or guarantee acceptance by every business or agency.
A mobile driver licence (mDL) is also different from a general-purpose digital identity account. A licence may be used to prove identity in one service without being presented as a digital licence in another, and privacy controls depend on the particular feature and verifier.
Where can you use a digital driver licence as ID?
Availability is not the same as universal acceptance. The Australian Passport Office provides a specific example: it accepts an Australian digital driver licence for passport applications and collections when you display it on your smartphone for a visual check. It does not accept a screenshot or an offline version for that purpose. Physical licences remain accepted.
That rule applies to passport services; it is not evidence that other government agencies, police, venues or private businesses must accept a digital licence, or that they use the same verification method. The Australian Passport Office’s current New! Digital driver licence guidance is the source for its procedure. For any other task, check the recipient’s rules before relying on your phone instead of your physical card.

What is changing in Australia’s digital driver licences?
Driver licences remain jurisdiction-issued credentials. The national effort is about making digital credentials more consistently verifiable, including across state and territory borders. Austroads says the Commonwealth, states and territories agreed on 21 June 2024 to use ISO 18013 and ISO 23220 for verifiable digital credentials that need cross-border verification, with the mDL as the first application. Austroads says it has been working with jurisdictions toward new mobile driver licences in 2026.
Austroads’ Digital Trust Service is part of that harmonisation effort. It is verification infrastructure, not a consumer app and not a national licence issuer. Its purpose sits alongside the licence services operated by individual jurisdictions.
What the standards are meant to address
Austroads’ 21 December 2023 harmonisation roadmap identifies several policy concerns that common standards and trust infrastructure are intended to help address:
- Verifying licences across jurisdictions and internationally.
- Giving licence holders control over which information they share.
- Confirming securely and in real time that a licence remains current.
- Allowing a licence to be used as an identity document where a recipient accepts it.
The roadmap also notes that transport agencies have only marginal control over some important digital-identity design decisions. That makes governance and representation—who sets verification rules and how jurisdictions participate—part of the interoperability question, not just technical details.

What information can a verifier see?
It depends on the licence service, the feature being used and the verifier’s request. “Digital” does not by itself mean less data is collected. A visual check can expose whatever details are displayed on the licence; selective disclosure requires a feature and a verification flow that actually limit what is shared.
NSW’s upgraded licence: consent-based QR requests in a pilot
In September 2026, New South Wales began piloting an upgraded Digital Driver Licence with selected residents in Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains. The state describes this as a staged pilot ahead of a planned wider rollout. More than 19,000 residents in those areas had signed up to be ready to use the upgrade, according to the NSW Government’s 30 September 2026 release; that is a signup figure, not a count of active users.
The upgrade supports QR-code-based requests for licence information. A holder can accept or decline a request, and only the information the holder approves is shared. The state says a verifier can use the Service NSW app. This is a specific feature of the NSW upgrade; it should not be assumed to work the same way in other jurisdictions or with every verifier.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe NSW Government described the intended change as letting “the individual select[] the information to be shared rather than the current practice of sharing too many personal details.” Its 30 September release said $11.5 million was being invested in digital identity enhancements that year, including the licence upgrade pilot. That investment figure covers the broader enhancements, not the licence pilot alone.

Service NSW explicitly distinguishes the Digital Driver Licence from NSW Digital ID. The licence is a jurisdiction-issued credential; NSW Digital ID is a separate identity service. They may relate to identity tasks, but one is not simply another name for the other.
Proving you are over 18 without showing your birth date
Selective age disclosure is a useful example of what privacy-preserving verification can mean. The Australian Government’s Age Assurance Technology Trial, in Part C on age verification, describes a model in which a holder consents to share a digitally signed claim such as “Over 18.” The verifier can receive a match/no-match result without receiving the holder’s date of birth.
This is an official trial model, not proof that Australian venues already accept mDL age claims. Service NSW says privacy-first capabilities such as proving over-18 status without revealing date of birth, address or other details are planned over time for its upgrade. Keep that future-facing NSW feature separate from the federal trial’s described architecture: neither establishes that every existing state app or venue supports selective age disclosure today.
How is a driver licence connected to Commonwealth myID?
Commonwealth myID can use a driver-licence photo check to help verify a person’s photo and potentially strengthen their myID when combined with other documents. This is identity proofing: it is not the same as showing a mobile licence to a venue or an enforcement officer.

As of myID’s 24 August 2026 update, Western Australian licence holders could use the feature. myID says broader access depends on state and territory participation in the National Driver Licence Facial Recognition Solution. An IDMatch June 2026 update said South Australia and Victoria had signed agreements to participate and were doing technical connection work; other jurisdictions were still considering arrangements. That uneven participation is one reason not to treat the feature as nationally available.
Commonwealth Digital ID figures give context for the broader identity system, but they are not mDL adoption figures. The Australian Government Digital ID System reported 80 million ID-verified transactions in the prior year and 15 million Digital IDs accessing 246 online government services in its 4 December 2025 update. The same update described 2.2 million Western Australian driver licence and learner’s permit holders in the progressive Strong Digital ID rollout; that is the rollout population, not completed enrolments.
How to decide whether to rely on your phone
- Check the recipient’s rule for the exact task. A service that accepts a digital licence for one purpose may not accept it for another. Do not infer acceptance from another organisation’s policy.
- Confirm the required presentation method. A verifier may visually inspect a live licence on screen or use a QR-based request. Those methods are not interchangeable. For passport services, the Australian Passport Office requires the on-screen licence and rejects screenshots and offline versions.
- Review the information request before approving it. In the NSW upgrade pilot, holders can accept or decline QR-based requests and approve only the information to be shared. Do not assume equivalent controls exist in another app or verification flow.
- Keep a physical licence available when acceptance is uncertain. The Australian Passport Office continues to accept physical licences, but the sources do not establish a single fallback rule for all recipients.
Is the rollout complete or compulsory?
No. As of 7 October 2026, the national standards and trust-service direction is advancing, but state services and Commonwealth identity-proofing participation remain at different stages. NSW’s upgraded licence is in a staged pilot, myID’s photo check is available to Western Australian licence holders with expansion dependent on jurisdiction participation, and the available official guidance does not establish a comprehensive acceptance list for police, venues or private-sector organisations.
