No. A Maya Mobile eSIM cannot be used while the phone is carrier-locked. The phone must also support eSIM and be an exact model or variant that Maya Mobile lists as compatible. Check both conditions before purchasing or installing a plan.
The direct answer: a carrier lock prevents Maya eSIM activation
A carrier-locked phone is restricted to the network that applied the lock. That restriction can prevent the phone from installing or activating an eSIM issued by another provider, including Maya Mobile. Maya’s Frequently Asked Questions says the device must be carrier-unlocked, and its terms also require an eSIM-compatible device.
There are therefore two independent checks:
- Carrier status: the phone must be unlocked so it can accept service from another carrier.
- Hardware and model support: the specific phone must contain eSIM capability and appear on Maya’s current compatibility checker or device list.
Passing one check does not pass the other. An unlocked phone may still be an unsupported regional variant, while an eSIM-capable phone can remain blocked by a carrier lock.
Check the phone before you buy or install a plan
1. Check an iPhone’s Carrier Lock field
On an iPhone, Apple exposes the relevant status in the Settings app:

- Scroll to Carrier Lock.
Maya’s support article, Error “Unsupported eSIM”, says No SIM restrictions means the iPhone is unlocked. If the field shows a different value, treat the phone as locked and do not expect a Maya plan to install until the locking carrier removes the restriction.
If you do not see the field or the result is unclear, ask the carrier that sold or financed the phone to confirm its lock status. Do not infer that a phone is unlocked merely because it has a working SIM, has been paid off, or was purchased second-hand.
2. Confirm the exact model’s eSIM compatibility
After checking carrier status, use Maya’s compatibility checker or device list through its FAQ. Select the exact model and, where applicable, the regional or storage variant shown on the phone. Manufacturers sometimes sell different variants under a similar product name, and eSIM support can vary by model, region, or edition.

This check is separate from the iPhone Carrier Lock field. “No SIM restrictions” proves only that the carrier lock is not present; it does not establish that Maya supports that particular device.

3. Check Android and other phones with the carrier and Maya
Menu labels and lock indicators differ among Android manufacturers and other platforms, so there is no single universal path that can be stated for every device. Check the phone’s exact model in Maya’s compatibility resources, then ask the current carrier to verify whether the handset is locked. Give both parties the model and regional variant exactly as displayed in the phone’s settings or purchase documentation.
What to do if the phone is locked
Request an unlock from the carrier that applied the lock
Maya cannot remove another carrier’s restriction. Its support guidance is explicit: “Please contact your carrier to have your device unlocked.” The carrier may process the request through customer service or live chat, and Maya says the change can usually be delivered over the air.
Carrier eligibility rules and processing times are not universal. They can depend on the account, payment status, financing agreement, fraud or loss flags, and the carrier’s own policies. Because those details are carrier-specific, confirm them directly rather than relying on a general waiting period.
- Identify the carrier that locked the phone, even if you now use a different network.
- Ask whether the device is eligible for an unlock and what account information is required.
- Complete any eligibility steps the carrier gives you.
- Wait for the carrier’s confirmation or over-the-air update.
- Restart the phone if instructed, then repeat the Carrier Lock and Maya compatibility checks.
Do not assume that a third-party unlocking gadget or service can legitimately bypass the lock. The documented route for this use case is an unlock performed by the carrier that controls the device restriction.

If you already purchased a Maya plan
Interpret an “Unsupported eSIM” message carefully
An “Unsupported eSIM” error does not automatically identify one single fault. On an iPhone, Maya says the message can indicate that the device is carrier-locked and cannot install a plan from another carrier. It can also occur when the phone is not a supported eSIM model or variant.
Before trying another installation, check the iPhone’s Carrier Lock field or obtain the lock status from the carrier. Then verify the exact model in Maya’s compatibility checker. This two-axis check—carrier status and device support—prevents you from treating an incompatible model as an unlocking problem or a locked model as an installation glitch.
Ask Maya support about a plan that cannot be installed
If the plan remains unused and the phone fails because it is locked or incompatible, review Maya’s current Terms and Conditions and contact Maya support. The terms describe a possible refund, less applicable payment-processing fees, when all of these conditions are met:
- The plan has not been installed because the phone is locked or incompatible.
- No data has been consumed.
- The refund request is made within 30 days of purchase.
This is a policy condition, not an automatic credit. Keep the purchase details and error information, and ask support to assess the request under the current terms. If any data has been used or the 30-day period has passed, the cited policy does not establish that a refund is available.

Unlocking does not replace the eSIM compatibility check
Removing the carrier lock solves only the network-restriction part of the problem. Maya’s terms require an unlocked, eSIM-compatible device, and its compatibility listings can change as model support is updated. A phone that passes the unlock test can still fail because its regional edition lacks eSIM hardware or because Maya does not support that model.
Conversely, a model listed by Maya can still reject installation while it carries a carrier lock. Treat the checks as a sequence rather than as alternatives: establish unlock status, then confirm the exact model, before installing a paid plan.

Once the carrier confirms the unlock and Maya confirms the model, follow Maya’s installation instructions. Its How eSIM Works guide explains that the eSIM can remain installed and be selected for cellular data when you arrive at your destination. That setup flow assumes the phone already meets the unlock requirement; leaving an eSIM installed does not remove a carrier restriction.
Use the phone’s normal eSIM-add process and Maya’s provided activation details. If installation still fails, record the exact message, verify that the Carrier Lock field still shows No SIM restrictions on an iPhone, and recheck the model listing before contacting support.

Maya does not provide a physical SIM workaround
Maya says it offers eSIM data plans only and does not offer physical SIM cards, according to Does Maya Mobile offer physical SIM cards? A regular physical Maya SIM therefore cannot be used as a fallback for a locked or eSIM-incompatible phone. You would need the carrier to unlock the phone and a model that Maya supports, or use a different connectivity option that is compatible with your device and carrier status.

Situations that commonly cause confusion
A second-hand phone appears to work with one SIM
Working service on the seller’s or previous owner’s network does not demonstrate that the phone accepts another carrier’s eSIM. Check the lock indicator and the exact Maya model listing instead of relying on the seller’s description.
The phone is paid off but still reports a lock
Payment completion and technical unlock status are separate facts. If the phone does not show No SIM restrictions on an iPhone, ask the original carrier to confirm whether its unlock has actually been applied.

A Maya plan will not bypass a pending carrier unlock. Ask the carrier for its current eligibility and processing information, and avoid consuming data on a plan while you are still trying to establish whether the device can install it.
The phone is unlocked but installation fails
Return to the second check: confirm the exact model and regional variant in Maya’s compatibility resources. If the model is supported and the lock status is clear, give Maya support the device details and the precise installation error rather than buying another plan.
Pre-purchase checklist
- On an iPhone, verify Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock shows No SIM restrictions.
- For any platform, identify the exact model and regional variant.
- Confirm that model in Maya’s current compatibility checker or device list.
- If locked, contact the carrier that applied the lock; do not count on a third-party bypass.
- Remember that Maya supplies eSIM plans only, not physical SIM cards.
- Keep the purchase record and error message if a plan cannot be installed.
Following these checks answers the practical question before payment: a Maya Mobile eSIM works only on a phone that is both carrier-unlocked and supported for Maya eSIM service.
