Sometimes—but pairing a game controller usually lets you navigate Android’s focused buttons and menus, not move a free-position mouse cursor. A cursor may be possible with a controller’s integrated touchpad or a compatible third-party app. On phones and tablets, a Bluetooth or USB mouse is the documented direct-pointer option.
What a standard game controller does on Android TV
Google documents a connected gamepad as a way to navigate Android TV: use the D-pad to move focus between on-screen items, then press A to select the focused item. Home and Back are also supported controls. This focus-based navigation is useful in TV interfaces, but it is not mouse control: it does not mean an analog stick will move a cursor freely across the screen. Google’s Android TV controller guide describes the standard workflow.
Can Android turn any gamepad into a mouse?
Android’s documented controller settings cover pairing and, on supported devices, reassignment of buttons or joysticks. They do not describe a general system-wide setting that converts an ordinary gamepad stick into a mouse. On Android phones and tablets, Google’s documented setup is to connect a compatible controller by cable or Bluetooth, then use controller settings for supported reassignment. Menu names and availability can vary by device and Android version. Google’s Android controller setup instructions explain the supported options.

Use an integrated touchpad
Some game controllers include a touchpad. Android’s developer documentation says touching an integrated controller touchpad can generate an on-screen mouse pointer for mouse-like navigation. This depends on the controller having that feature and the device and software supporting it; it is not a capability to assume for every gamepad. Android Developers’ controller documentation describes touchpad pointer input.

Try a compatible cursor app
The Google Play listing for Gamepad Mouse advertises using a gamepad stick to move an Android cursor and mapping buttons, including for Android TV and tablets. The app listing says it needs Accessibility Service access to display the cursor, perform clicks, and invoke system actions such as Back and Home. Its troubleshooting guidance specifies X-input mode. These are claims and instructions from the app listing, not confirmation that it works reliably with every controller, device, or Android version. Use a mouse with an Android phone or tablet
If you need a visible pointer on a phone or tablet, Google documents connecting a Bluetooth or USB mouse. The right connection may depend on your device’s ports and whether an adapter is needed; consult the device instructions for the exact steps. Google’s Android accessibility guide covers connecting external devices and notes that specific navigation and feature names may vary by market and device.

What to check before troubleshooting
- On Android TV, try D-pad focus movement and A selection first; do not treat the absence of a cursor as a pairing failure.
- If a cursor is essential, check whether your controller has an integrated touchpad or whether a cursor app supports your specific device and Android version.
- Before enabling an app’s Accessibility Service, review its current Play Store permissions and make sure you know how to return to ordinary controller use.
- For phones and tablets, consider a Bluetooth or USB mouse when you need direct pointer control rather than gamepad navigation.
