What the compatibility means
FLEXVOLT is DEWALT’s dual-voltage battery system. DEWALT says a FLEXVOLT battery can be used with compatible tools in its 20V MAX and 60V MAX systems; the DCB612 product page also lists compatibility with 120V MAX tools. When the battery is moved between compatible tools, it switches voltage automatically. You do not have to change a setting on the pack or install a voltage-conversion adapter.
DEWALT’s system page states: “FLEXVOLT® batteries are compatible with DEWALT 20V MAX* power tools.” The asterisk matters: the voltage labels use DEWALT’s “MAX” convention, rather than describing nominal voltage. The compatibility statement applies to DEWALT tools in the supported systems, not to every tool that happens to use a similar voltage label or battery shape.
In practical terms, the pack is meant to move between compatible DEWALT tools without a separate conversion step. Use it according to the tool’s instructions; the switch happens inside the FLEXVOLT system, not through a setting the user selects. The compatibility statement is direct manufacturer guidance, not a third-party adapter workaround.

Why “20V MAX” and “18V” can both appear
DEWALT explains that 20V MAX is the battery’s maximum initial voltage, measured without a workload. The corresponding nominal voltage is 18V. The same convention applies to its other FLEXVOLT system labels: DEWALT gives maximum initial and nominal figures of 60V and 54V, and 120V and 108V, respectively.
Those numbers describe different voltage measurements, not two competing compatibility standards. A tool or pack marked 20V MAX belongs to DEWALT’s 20V MAX system even though the nominal figure is 18V. Preserve the “MAX” wording when comparing product labels; it avoids treating the maximum initial figure as a typical loaded operating voltage.
That distinction is useful when reading a label or product listing that mentions both figures. The 20V MAX name is not a promise that the tool runs at 20 volts under load, and the 18V nominal figure does not mean the pack belongs to a different DEWALT system. For the compatibility question, use the system designation and the specific tool’s manual rather than comparing the numbers in isolation.

DEWALT’s FLEXVOLT system page lists the DCB606, DCB609, DCB612, and DCB615 battery models. The product details available for the DCB606 and DCB612 provide capacity and runtime claims; the information summarized here does not establish comparable capacities or runtimes for the DCB609 and DCB615.

The “up to” runtime figures are DEWALT product-page comparisons with a named 1.5Ah baseline battery, not independent test results or a guarantee for every tool. Actual runtime for a particular tool and task is not established by those comparisons. A demanding application, the tool being used, and the work being done can all affect how long a pack lasts; the product-page figures should not be read as a prediction for a specific job.

How to check your tool before using the battery
For a specific tool, confirm the exact model and its battery guidance rather than relying only on a general system label. Use this check before fitting a pack:
- Find the tool’s model number. Check the label on the tool or its documentation so you are looking up the right model. A brand or voltage label alone may not identify the exact compatibility guidance.
- Open the tool’s manual or DEWALT compatibility information. Look for the battery system or pack models supported by that tool. The manufacturer’s general statement covers compatible DEWALT 20V MAX tools, but the manual is the right reference for a particular model.
- Confirm the pack is a DEWALT FLEXVOLT model. The DCB606 and DCB612 are named examples; DEWALT’s system page also lists DCB609 and DCB615. Check the exact model number printed on the pack if you are comparing batteries or checking a manual.
- Seat the battery as directed in the manual. Do not force a pack that does not fit or appears damaged. Consult the tool and battery instructions if anything seems wrong.
- Use the tool’s normal operating instructions. The voltage switching is automatic; it is not a user-selected mode. There is no separate FLEXVOLT-to-20V conversion setting to activate.
If you are unsure whether a tool qualifies, pause and check its manual or ask DEWALT support. A general statement about 20V MAX compatibility is not a substitute for confirming an unusual, older, or otherwise uncertain model. The same is true if the tool has a different system label: do not infer compatibility from a similar voltage number or a pack that appears to fit.
Keep tool compatibility and charger compatibility as separate checks. A tool’s manual addresses which battery packs it supports; the charger’s manual addresses which packs it can charge. Confirm both if you plan to use the same FLEXVOLT pack across a kit with multiple tools and chargers.
Can you charge a FLEXVOLT battery on a 20V MAX charger?
For the DCB612, DEWALT states that it is compatible with all 20V MAX chargers. DEWALT’s DCB118 charger manual search result also describes that charger as designed for DEWALT 20V MAX lithium-ion and FLEXVOLT packs, and directs readers to a compatibility chart.

Do not assume that every charger is covered by those specific statements. If your charger is a different model, check its manual and compatibility chart for the battery model. Tool compatibility and charger compatibility are separate checks: a pack being suitable for a tool does not by itself establish that every charger can charge it.

When checking a charger, use its exact model number and look for the pack type in the manual or compatibility chart. The DCB612’s “all 20V MAX chargers” statement is specific to that battery model. For another FLEXVOLT pack or a charger you cannot identify, follow the charger’s documentation rather than extrapolating from the DCB612 or DCB118 information.
Do you need an adapter?
No adapter is indicated when using a DEWALT FLEXVOLT battery in a compatible DEWALT 20V MAX tool. DEWALT directly states that FLEXVOLT batteries work with compatible 20V MAX tools, and the pack handles its voltage switching automatically.
DEWALT’s battery-adapter products address a different situation: its adapter page describes adapters such as the DCA1820 as enabling 20V batteries to be used on compatible 18V tools. That is not the route required for a FLEXVOLT battery in a 20V MAX tool. Do not buy an adapter on the assumption that it is needed for this pairing.
The distinction is the direction and system involved: the adapter described by DEWALT is for using a 20V battery on certain compatible 18V tools. It is not evidence that a FLEXVOLT pack needs an adapter to work in a DEWALT 20V MAX tool. Check the exact tool and adapter documentation if you have a different pairing in mind.
