Yes, but only for selected tasks. An Xbox Series S or X can open Microsoft Edge, and both Xbox and PS5 can accept a keyboard and mouse for supported navigation or text entry. That is useful for browsing, searching and messaging, but it does not make a console a Windows desktop. Console operating systems do not provide established support for the full range of Windows applications, file workflows, browser extensions or work tools.
The practical answer depends on what you mean by “like a Windows PC”: browsing and typing, playing games with PC-style controls, or replacing a computer for school and work. Those are separate capabilities.
Three different meanings of “use a console like a PC”
Browsing and typing
This is the area where consoles come closest to a basic computer. Xbox Series S and X include Microsoft Edge, and Microsoft describes using a connected keyboard and mouse to browse. On PS5, Sony documents USB and Bluetooth keyboard and mouse support for entering text and selecting items on screen.

Peripheral support at the system level does not mean every game accepts those controls. Each game decides whether keyboard and mouse input is enabled, and support can differ between platforms, modes and versions.

Running Windows software
A console browser and PC-style peripherals are not evidence that the console runs Windows or can install ordinary Windows desktop programs. If your requirement includes a particular Windows application, local file management, extensions or a complete office workflow, treat a Windows PC as a separate device rather than assuming the console can substitute for it.
What Xbox Series S and X can do
Microsoft’s official Edge guide for Xbox covers the Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X. It explains that Edge is available on the console and that a keyboard and mouse can be connected for browsing. The guide says, “With the keyboard, you can use shortcuts on your console, like any computer, and still have quick access to your favorite games.” The wording describes keyboard shortcuts and access to games; it does not promise Windows application support.
For a living-room setup, a USB keyboard and mouse combination is the simplest accessory choice when the devices are compatible with the console. A wired set avoids battery and pairing issues. Wireless sets may work through a USB receiver or Bluetooth where supported, but the exact model matters, so check compatibility before buying.

Typical Xbox uses
- Entering search terms, passwords and messages more quickly than with an on-screen keyboard.
- Moving a pointer around supported web pages in Edge.
- Using keyboard shortcuts while browsing.
- Opening game, account and help pages without switching to another device.
These uses are best understood as console browsing features, not as a hidden Windows desktop. The available browser behavior, downloads, websites and extensions are not established by the official guidance cited here, so do not assume that a work site or browser add-on will behave exactly as it does on a computer.
What PS5 can do
Sony’s PS5 keyboard and mouse support page documents connecting USB and Bluetooth keyboards and mice. The devices can be used for text entry and for selecting items in supported parts of the interface. Sony also cautions that not all keyboards and mice work with the console.
Connecting a USB device
- Plug the keyboard or mouse into an available USB port on the PS5.
- Wait for the console to recognize the device, then test text entry or pointer movement in a screen that accepts it.
- If it is not detected, try another USB port, remove an unnecessary hub and confirm that the device works on another computer.
Connecting a Bluetooth device
- Put the keyboard or mouse into Bluetooth pairing mode according to its manufacturer’s instructions.
- Open the PS5 accessory settings and select the device when it appears in the list of available Bluetooth accessories.
- Complete pairing and test the device. If it does not appear, charge it, move it closer to the console and check Sony’s compatibility caveat before replacing it.
PS5 support should therefore be treated as input-device compatibility, not as a promise that every game, website or productivity service will accept the device.

The table highlights why “can it use a keyboard?” and “can it replace my PC?” have different answers. A console can cover a narrow interaction need while still lacking the software environment required for general desktop work.

- Define the task first. Decide whether you need web searches, messages, game controls or a specific work application. This prevents buying peripherals for a task the console cannot perform.
- Check the exact console model. The Microsoft documentation cited here applies to Xbox Series S and X. Sony’s instructions apply to PS5. Do not extend those statements automatically to older generations or other platforms.
- Choose a compatible keyboard and mouse. A basic USB combination is the least complicated option for supported browsing and typing. For wireless products, verify the console, connection method and regional model before purchase.
- Connect one device at a time. Plug in the keyboard, test text entry, then connect the mouse and test pointer movement. Isolating devices makes troubleshooting easier.
- Test the exact destination. Open the intended browser page, sign-in screen or game and check whether typing, pointer movement and shortcuts work there. System recognition does not guarantee support in every app or game.
- Keep a controller available. Some menus and games still require a controller, even when a keyboard and mouse are connected.
Keyboard and mouse gaming: local console play versus cloud gaming
Do not confuse local console support with the separate Xbox Cloud Gaming announcement from May 15, 2024. Xbox Wire’s announcement describes mouse and keyboard support for Xbox Cloud Gaming in a browser and in the Xbox app on PC, and directs players to games specifically designated as supporting those inputs.
That announcement is about cloud gaming in the contexts it names. It is not a list of every locally installed Xbox game that accepts a keyboard and mouse. For local play, inspect the individual game’s control options or publisher documentation. If the game does not implement those inputs, connecting the devices will not add support.

Why support differs by game
- Developers may enable keyboard and mouse only for selected modes.
- Competitive games may separate input types for matchmaking or balance.
- A game can support the devices on one platform but not another.
- Menus may accept a mouse while gameplay still requires a controller.
What a console does not reliably replace
Windows-only applications
Accounting packages, desktop editors, engineering tools and other Windows programs require their own supported operating environment. The cited Xbox and PlayStation documents do not establish a method for installing or running those applications on a console.
Full file management
A computer is built around folders, removable storage, application data and user-controlled files. Console storage is primarily managed for games and system content. The available evidence does not establish a general-purpose file workflow equivalent to Windows Explorer.
Browser extensions and work portals
Having a browser does not guarantee that every extension, document editor, upload tool or authentication system will work. If your school or employer requires a named extension or desktop client, verify that service independently before relying on a console.

Multitasking and peripherals
Consoles prioritize games and controlled system experiences. They are not documented here as supporting the monitors, printers, scanners, storage devices and multitasking patterns commonly used with a desktop PC.
Troubleshooting keyboard or mouse problems
The console does not detect the device
- Reconnect the USB plug or try another port.
- Remove a USB hub and connect the device directly.
- Replace or recharge batteries in a wireless device.
- For Bluetooth, repeat pairing mode and keep the device close to the console.
- Check the manufacturer’s compatibility information and Sony’s warning that not every device works with PS5.
The device works in menus but not in a game
This usually indicates a game-level limitation rather than a failed accessory. Look for the game’s own input settings and platform documentation. A console can recognize a keyboard while a particular title ignores it.
Typing works but browsing is limited
Confirm that you are using the supported browser experience for the console model. If a website depends on a desktop extension, local file access or a Windows application, use a PC or another supported device instead of treating the limitation as a keyboard fault.

Buy them when your main goal is faster typing, easier text selection or a game that explicitly supports those inputs. A basic USB keyboard and mouse combo is a practical optional accessory, provided you verify compatibility with the exact console and device.
Keep using a Windows PC when you need desktop applications, dependable file handling, specialized browser extensions, broad peripheral support or a work-and-school environment. Use the console as a supplement when it meets a specific browsing or gaming need; do not purchase it expecting a general Windows replacement.
