Yes, you can use a Chromebook offline, but only for apps and content that support offline mode and were prepared while you were connected. Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Gmail, Keep, selected Drive files, downloaded books or videos, local files, photos and some games can continue working without Wi‑Fi.

Offline mode is not a switch that makes every website or streaming service work. Cloud files must be synced or downloaded first, storage space must be available, and a work or school administrator may restrict features. Changes made in supported apps normally synchronize when the Chromebook reconnects.

Can you use a Chromebook offline?

A Chromebook can be useful without an internet connection for several common tasks. You can create and edit supported documents, read synchronized email, write Keep notes, open files stored on the device, view downloaded media and use apps labeled as working offline. The exact result depends on the app, account type, device storage, administrator policies and whether you completed the required setup before going offline.

Think of offline use in two categories:

  • Local content: files, photos or downloaded media already stored on the Chromebook.
  • Prepared cloud content: Google services that have cached selected files or messages for offline access.

A website that needs a live server, a file that was never synchronized or an app that requires continuous authentication will not become available merely because the Chromebook is powered on.

What to prepare before disconnecting

Complete preparation while you still have an internet connection. Open each service, enable its offline setting, download the material you need and look for an offline or checkmark indicator. Test one file or message before leaving coverage.

Google Docs, Sheets and Slides

Docs, Sheets and Slides can be viewed, created and edited offline after setup. Google’s offline editor instructions require an internet connection during setup, Chrome or Microsoft Edge, a non-private browsing window, the Google Docs Offline Chrome extension and enough free storage on the device.

  1. While online, open Google Drive or the Docs, Sheets or Slides settings.
  2. Turn on the Offline option.
  3. Install or enable the Google Docs Offline extension if prompted.
  4. Mark important files as available offline. In Drive, use the file’s menu and choose the offline-availability option.
  5. Open a prepared file once and check its offline status indicator before disconnecting.

Some recent files may be saved automatically when space permits, but do not rely on that behavior for essential work. Select the documents you know you will need. A managed account can have offline access disabled by an administrator, in which case the setting may be unavailable.

Google Drive files

On a Chromebook, individual Drive files and folders can be made available offline from the Files app. A checkmark indicates that the item is stored for offline use. You can edit supported files without a connection; those edits synchronize after the Chromebook reconnects.

Google identifies Google Maps and Google Forms as unsupported offline file types in its Chromebook guidance. Other cloud items may also be unsuitable if the associated app requires a live connection. Confirm the status of each file instead of assuming that everything visible in Drive has been cached.

Chromebook Plus: synchronize My Drive

Chromebook Plus devices provide an additional option to synchronize all files in My Drive. Enable it from the Chromebook’s system settings and make sure the device has enough free storage. Files display a checkmark after synchronization completes.

This setting applies to My Drive, not every item you can access through Google Drive. Shared content, shortcuts or other locations may still require individual preparation, so verify the exact folders you intend to use.

Gmail Offline

Gmail can read, search and respond to synchronized messages offline. To configure it, open Gmail while online, open its offline settings, enable offline mail, choose how many days of messages to synchronize and save the setting. Use mail.google.com after the Chromebook loses connectivity.

Gmail Offline does not work in an Incognito window. An email composed without a connection is placed in a new Outbox folder. It remains there until connectivity returns, then sends automatically if the account can reconnect. Work and school administrators may control whether offline mail is allowed or how much mail can be synchronized.

Google Keep

Keep needs time online to save its notes locally. After the app has finished saving, you can read and edit existing notes and create new ones without a connection. Keep uploads the changes when the Chromebook reconnects. Open the notes you expect to need before going offline so they have a chance to cache.

What you can do offline day to day

Work with local files and photos

The Chromebook Files app opens documents and other files already stored on local storage. You can also view and edit photos with the built-in photo editor. Save downloads to a local folder rather than leaving them only in a cloud location if you know you will be traveling without service.

Web pages saved as HTML files can be read offline. This is different from leaving a browser tab open: a live page may fail when it tries to load scripts, images or data from its server.

Use offline-capable web apps

When looking for additional Chromebook software, filter the Chrome Web Store for apps marked “Runs offline.” That label is a useful check, but still test the app with Wi‑Fi disabled. Some applications allow only limited offline features, such as viewing but not exporting or synchronizing.

Read books

Google Play Books supports downloading eligible ebooks for offline reading. Download each title in advance and open it once before you leave a connection. Availability can depend on the book and the account that purchased or borrowed it.

Watch downloaded movies and television

Some eligible movies and TV episodes can be downloaded for offline viewing through supported apps. The download must finish before disconnection, and the app may require periodic online checks or an active subscription. Do not treat a streaming-library listing as proof that a title is ready; verify that it appears in the app’s downloaded or offline section.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Play games

Search for offline support before depending on a game. The Chrome Web Store has a “Runs offline” filter, and compatible Chromebooks may offer offline games through Google Play. Games that require multiplayer servers, cloud saves or a continuous sign-in will not work fully without a connection. If a game has a practice or single-player mode, test that mode in airplane mode before a trip.

Listen to music

Google states that YouTube Music for Chromebook does not support offline playback. For offline music, its Chromebook guidance points to the YouTube Music Android app and a YouTube Premium subscription; download the music in that Android app while online. The Chromebook web experience alone should not be expected to play a library without connectivity.

What will not work, or may work only partly

  • Live websites: sites that fetch data, authenticate sessions or run server-side tools need a connection.
  • Unsupported Drive types: Google lists Maps and Forms as unsupported for offline Drive use.
  • Unprepared cloud files: a file without an offline indicator may open only after reconnection.
  • Streaming without downloads: video or music services generally need a completed, authorized download for offline playback.
  • Apps requiring servers: multiplayer games, cloud editors and services with continuous account checks can stop working.
  • Incognito and guest contexts: cached data and offline settings may not be available; Gmail Offline specifically does not work in Incognito.
  • Managed devices: schools and employers can disable offline mail, Google Play or Android app installation.

Offline access also consumes local storage. A Chromebook with very little free space may fail to cache a document, download media or complete a Drive synchronization even when the service supports offline work.

Offline approaches compared

Approach What is stored How to prepare Main limitation
Individual Drive files Selected supported files or folders Use the Files app or Drive file menu; confirm the checkmark Not every Drive type is supported; Maps and Forms are listed as unsupported
Chromebook Plus My Drive sync Files in My Drive, subject to available storage Enable My Drive synchronization in system settings and wait for checkmarks Does not automatically cover every shared or otherwise accessible Drive item
Browser-based offline apps Cached documents, messages or notes Enable offline mode while online; use a supported browser and non-private window Features vary, and administrators can disable access
Android apps Downloads or app data saved by the app Install from Google Play and download content in advance Play Store access may be blocked; app and subscription rules apply
Local storage Files copied directly to the Chromebook Save or copy files before disconnecting Edits do not automatically reach a cloud service unless you upload them later

How synchronization works when you reconnect

When connectivity returns, supported edits in Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive and Keep upload to Google services. Gmail releases messages held in Outbox. Leave the Chromebook online long enough for status indicators to clear, especially after editing large files or downloading media.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If two devices changed the same cloud file while one was offline, the service may need to reconcile the edits. Avoid closing the Chromebook immediately after reconnecting; open the file and confirm that the latest version and any expected changes are visible.

Troubleshoot Chromebook offline problems

A document will not open or save offline

  1. Reconnect briefly and verify that the file is marked available offline.
  2. Check that you are using Chrome or Microsoft Edge, not a private browsing window.
  3. Confirm that the Google Docs Offline extension is installed and that the browser is updated.
  4. Free storage by removing unneeded downloads, then try marking the file offline again.
  5. Check whether the account is managed and offline access has been disabled.
  6. If the file is unusually large, try a smaller copy; Google’s troubleshooting guidance notes that large files can fail to synchronize offline.

Gmail is empty or messages stay unsent

Return online and inspect Gmail’s offline settings, including the selected synchronization period. Messages written while offline should appear in Outbox, not Sent, until a connection is restored. If offline mail is unavailable entirely, ask the organization’s administrator whether the setting is restricted.

Drive files show no checkmark

Connect to the internet, confirm that the file is a supported type, and wait for synchronization to finish. On Chromebook Plus, verify that My Drive sync is enabled and that enough storage remains. Shared files or items outside My Drive may need to be selected individually.

An Android app or game will not install

Check whether the Chromebook supports Google Play and whether a school or employer has blocked Android apps. For an installed app, open it online, download its content and test it with Wi‑Fi disabled. An app’s Play Store listing or offline label is not a guarantee that every feature works without a server.

Offline-use checklist

  • Enable offline mode for Docs, Sheets, Slides, Gmail and Keep while connected.
  • Mark essential Drive files or folders and wait for the checkmark.
  • On Chromebook Plus, consider My Drive sync only if you have sufficient storage.
  • Download books, eligible videos, music in the supported Android app and any game data you need.
  • Copy critical files to local storage and save important web pages as HTML.
  • Test airplane mode before departure, including opening files, editing a document and composing a draft email.
  • Reconnect afterward and allow time for edits and queued messages to synchronize.
