You can use a Bluetooth speaker with a TV only if the exact TV model supports Bluetooth audio. That does not make a portable speaker the best TV upgrade: pairing may introduce lip-sync delay, and manufacturers generally design portable speakers for phones and tablets. For reliable TV sound, first check your TV’s outputs and consider a soundbar connected through HDMI ARC/eARC or optical.

The available manufacturer information supports a practical shortlist of examples, not an objectively tested ranking of the five best speakers. The products below are grouped by how they might fit your setup—not ranked by sound quality.

Check TV compatibility before choosing a Bluetooth speaker

A “smart TV” label does not guarantee that a television can send sound to a Bluetooth speaker. Sony says Google TV and Android TV models need support for the Bluetooth Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) to connect to Bluetooth speakers or other audio devices. Check your TV’s specifications and compatible-device information for the exact model; compatibility may vary by model and region, and Sony does not guarantee every device combination. Sony’s Bluetooth audio guidance explains the limitation.

Even when pairing works, audio and picture may not stay synchronized. JBL notes that Bluetooth and A2DP versions and audio codecs differ across devices, so a particular TV-and-speaker combination cannot be assumed to work without latency or lip-sync delay. This is a possible compatibility issue, not proof that every Bluetooth connection will have noticeable delay. See JBL’s Smart TV compatibility guidance.

Portable Bluetooth speaker or TV soundbar?

Choose based on how you will use the speaker. JBL says its portable speakers are primarily designed for phones and tablets and recommends its soundbars for television use. That is manufacturer guidance, not an independent comparison of every portable speaker and TV.

  • Consider a portable Bluetooth speaker if you already own one, your exact TV supports Bluetooth audio, and you can test for lip-sync problems before relying on it.
  • Consider a TV soundbar if clearer dialogue or a dedicated television connection is the main goal. Many soundbars connect to a TV by HDMI ARC/eARC or optical, avoiding Bluetooth as the TV-audio link.

Bluetooth on a soundbar may be for streaming music from a phone, rather than receiving the TV’s sound. Confirm the product’s documented TV inputs instead of assuming that Bluetooth reception works in both directions.

1. Bose TV Speaker: a compact bar with dialogue mode

Bose says its TV Speaker is designed for nearly any TV with an optical audio output or HDMI ARC. Its Dialogue mode is intended to make vocals clearer. Bose lists dimensions of 2.21 inches high by 23.38 inches wide by 4.02 inches deep, and a weight of 4.34 pounds—useful details to check against your TV stand or shelf.

The soundbar also supports Bluetooth 4.2, with a stated range of up to 30 feet (9 meters), for streaming music and podcasts from a Bluetooth-enabled portable device. That feature is not evidence that the TV should send its audio to the bar over Bluetooth. These are Bose’s product claims and specifications, not independent test results. See Bose’s TV Speaker details and Bose’s soundbar connection information.

2. Sony HT-S2000: a 3.1-channel bar with voice mode

Sony’s specification lists a 3.1-channel speaker structure, a built-in subwoofer, HDMI eARC/ARC, optical audio input, and Voice Mode. It also lists Bluetooth 5.2 receiver functionality. The HDMI and optical inputs are the documented TV-audio paths; do not assume Bluetooth is the TV connection without verifying the exact setup.

3. Yamaha SR-C20A: a compact bar with a built-in subwoofer

Yamaha identifies the SR-C20A as a compact soundbar with a built-in subwoofer. The available product information does not establish its comparative listening performance or all of its connection options, so confirm the complete specifications for the particular model and its availability before deciding whether it fits your TV. Yamaha’s SR-C20A specifications are the place to check its details.

4. JBL Clip 5: a portable option only after compatibility checks

JBL’s Smart TV compatibility guidance includes the Clip 5 among the portable models covered. The same guidance warns that compatibility and synchronization depend on the TV and speaker, and recommends soundbars for television use. Treat the Clip 5 as a conditional option for someone who already has it or has a specific portable use in mind—not as a universally compatible TV speaker. Confirm support for your TV model and test the actual pairing. JBL’s compatibility page sets out the caveats.

Five built-in speakers, including two side-firing drivers, create wide surround without rear speakers. Precision DSP ensures <0.5 ms latency for smooth, theater-like sound. Setup takes less than 1 minute.
  • Voice Clarity Enhancement: VoiceMX technology uses advanced DSP algorithms to isolate and enhance vocal frequencies in real time. Dialogue remains crisp and easy to follow by separating speech from background effects and music, even at low volumes or during intense scenes.
  • 300W Output with 6-Driver System: Featuring five precision-tuned full-range drivers and a dedicated wired wooden subwoofer, the system delivers up to 300W of peak power for bold, room-filling sound. With a frequency response of 45 Hz–18 kHz and a maximum SPL of 99 dB, it reproduces everything from subtle nuances to explosive cinematic effects.
  • 18 mm High-Excursion Driver: Powered by BassMX technology, the wired wooden subwoofer features a 18 mm high-excursion driver, a 5.3L tuned cabinet, and a high-density magnetic circuit. This design delivers deeper, tighter bass with greater air displacement and enhanced low-frequency performance—bringing more realism to every scene.
  • HDMI eARC for True Dolby Atmos: HDMI eARC supports up to 37 Mbps of bandwidth, unlocking the full potential of lossless Dolby Atmos 5.1-channel audio. Compared to standard ARC, eARC delivers richer surround effects and greater detail. CEC integration allows the TV and soundbar to work together with unified control.

5. JBL Charge 5 or Go 4: other portable models to verify

JBL’s same compatibility page also lists the Charge 5 and Go 4. Their inclusion does not establish that either will work with every TV, avoid latency, or outperform a soundbar. If you want to use one with your television, check your TV’s A2DP support and confirm how the exact pairing behaves before making it your primary TV speaker.

How to choose for your room and TV

Compare the connection and features that matter to your setup rather than relying on a product’s Bluetooth label.

  • TV outputs: Check whether your TV has optical audio out or HDMI ARC/eARC. Match that output to a soundbar’s documented input.
  • Bluetooth compatibility: For a portable speaker, confirm that your exact TV supports Bluetooth audio/A2DP and consult model-specific compatibility details.
  • Synchronization: If you choose Bluetooth, test dialogue and on-screen action together. If lip sync is distracting, use a supported wired TV-audio connection instead.
  • Dialogue features: Look for a documented dialogue or voice mode if speech clarity is your priority; the Bose TV Speaker and Sony HT-S2000 list such features.
  • Bass and placement: Note whether bass comes from a built-in subwoofer, and check the soundbar’s dimensions against the space available. The Sony HT-S2000 and Yamaha SR-C20A are documented as having built-in subwoofers.
  • Other uses: If you also want to stream music from a phone, verify that Bluetooth is specified for that purpose. Do not confuse phone-to-soundbar streaming with TV-to-soundbar audio.

How to connect and troubleshoot

For a Bluetooth speaker

  1. Find your TV’s exact model number and check its specifications or compatibility list for Bluetooth audio and A2DP support.
  2. Put the speaker into pairing mode and use the TV’s Bluetooth audio-device menu to search for and select it. Menu names vary by TV model, so follow that model’s instructions.
  3. Play dialogue or another video with clear lip movement. If sound is delayed, check the TV’s audio-sync settings and the manuals for both devices; available adjustments vary.
  4. If pairing fails or lip sync remains unacceptable, use a supported TV-to-audio connection instead of assuming another portable Bluetooth model will solve the problem.

For a soundbar connected to the TV

  1. Check the TV and soundbar manuals to confirm a matching optical or HDMI ARC/eARC connection.
  2. Connect the cable to the matching ports and select the soundbar or external-audio output in the TV’s sound settings.
  3. If using HDMI ARC/eARC, use the ports labeled for ARC/eARC and follow the manufacturers’ setup steps. If using optical, select the optical or external-audio output if the TV requires it.
  4. Play a program and confirm that sound comes through the bar. Use a soundbar’s Bluetooth mode separately when streaming from a phone, if that is supported.

What the five examples can—and cannot—tell you

The Bose and Sony examples have documented optical and HDMI TV connections, while the Yamaha details establish a compact design and built-in subwoofer but do not establish every connection option here. JBL’s listed portable speakers remain dependent on the exact TV pairing, with possible latency. These details help narrow a shortlist, but they are not a substitute for verified model compatibility or side-by-side listening comparisons.
