Sometimes—but you must check the exact laptop configuration. A laptop can have soldered RAM with a replaceable SSD, socketed RAM with no storage expansion, or another combination. The product-family name is not enough. Before buying, obtain the full model or SKU, read the maker’s specifications and service manual, and verify RAM and storage independently.
What “upgradeable” means on a laptop
Upgradeability is not one yes-or-no property. Memory and storage follow separate upgrade paths, and the answer can differ between configurations sold under the same family name.
- RAM (system memory): Modules may be soldered directly to the motherboard, installed in sockets, or split between soldered memory and one or more sockets.
- Internal storage: The laptop may have a replaceable drive, an additional storage slot, or storage that is not intended to be removed by the user.
For example, “the RAM is upgradeable” does not establish that the SSD is replaceable. Conversely, a laptop can accept a larger internal drive while its memory remains fixed. Treat the two questions as separate decisions from the beginning.

Manufacturers can also sell several configurations with different memory arrangements, drives, or available slots under one marketing name. The reliable unit of identification is the exact model identifier, SKU, machine type, or other configuration code—not just a series name shown on a retail page.

Why the exact model or SKU matters
A broad name such as a product family can cover machines with different motherboards and different service options. A specification for one configuration may therefore be wrong for another configuration that looks nearly identical.
Ask the seller for the complete identifier before you decide. Depending on the manufacturer, it may appear as a model number, SKU, machine type, product number, or a longer configuration code. Have the seller confirm the identifier printed on the listing, quotation, or product label rather than supplying only a family name.
Use that identifier in the manufacturer’s support site. You are looking for two kinds of documentation:
- Technical specifications: the installed memory, supported memory type and capacity, storage type, and listed expansion options.
- Service or maintenance documentation: whether the relevant components are accessible, which parts can be removed, and any model-specific requirements.
Acer’s upgrade guidance specifically recommends checking the exact model and its service manual before purchasing parts. Apply the same discipline to any manufacturer.
A step-by-step pre-purchase check
1. Get the complete identifier from the seller
Do not proceed with only a family name, processor label, screen size, or a photograph. Request the full model and SKU, including any regional or configuration suffix. If a seller cannot identify the exact machine, you cannot reliably validate an internal upgrade part.
2. Locate the manufacturer’s specification page
Enter the identifier on the laptop maker’s support site and open the specification page for that exact configuration. Record the installed RAM, memory technology, storage type, and any expansion language. A listing that merely says “up to” a capacity may describe the family rather than the particular unit, so confirm that the page matches the identifier you were given.
3. Open the service manual or maintenance guide
Search the same support area for a service manual, maintenance manual, or upgrade guide. Look for diagrams or instructions that show the memory sockets, storage bay, removable cover, and supported parts. The manual is also where you can determine whether the manufacturer documents user access to the component.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors4. Analyze RAM separately
Write down four items: whether memory is soldered, socketed, or mixed; the memory type; the number of sockets; and the supported maximum capacity for the exact model. Also note whether the listed capacity is already installed and whether any socket is free. A socket is useful only if the documentation confirms that the model supports an additional module.

- Actual memory speed may vary depending on the system, CPU, motherboard, BIOS settings, and supported memory configuration. DDR4 3200MHz modules may operate at lower speeds such as 2933MHz or 2666MHz when supported by the host system. Please check your device specifications and compatibility before purchase.

5. Analyze storage separately
Determine whether the existing drive can be replaced, whether an additional slot is present, and which interface and physical form factor each position supports. Record the supported capacity if the manufacturer provides one. Do not infer compatibility from a connector’s appearance alone.
6. Use a compatibility lookup as a second check
After reading the manufacturer’s documentation, enter the exact make and model into Crucial’s Upgrade Selector. Its selector is model-based, and Crucial warns that not every upgrade works with every computer. You can also use the Crucial System Scanner, which analyzes a computer’s current memory and storage and lists compatible upgrades.
Use these results to identify candidate parts, not to replace the manufacturer’s documentation. If the selector and the service manual disagree, pause the purchase and resolve the model mismatch or obtain confirmation from the laptop maker.
How to tell whether the RAM can be upgraded
Soldered memory
Soldered RAM is attached to the motherboard rather than installed as a removable module. A service manual may identify it as onboard, integrated, or soldered memory. If all of the laptop’s memory is soldered, there is no module to remove or add later. Choose the required capacity at purchase unless the manufacturer documents another supported path.
Socketed memory
Socketed RAM uses removable modules. The documentation should identify the supported memory type and the maximum capacity for that model. It should also show how many sockets exist and whether they are occupied. A laptop with a free socket may accept an additional compatible module; a laptop with occupied sockets may require replacing existing modules to increase capacity.
Mixed soldered and socketed memory
Some configurations combine a fixed amount of onboard memory with one or more removable modules. In that case, only the socketed portion is replaceable, and the supported total depends on the exact model’s limits. Do not assume that a free-looking position is usable until the service documentation identifies it as a supported memory socket.
Memory type and capacity are part of compatibility
Physical fit is not enough. Match the memory type and the model’s supported capacity exactly. A module that fits the shape of a socket can still be unsuitable if its type or capacity is outside the documented requirements. Write the requirements down before searching for a part, then compare the proposed module or kit against every requirement.
How to tell whether the internal storage can be upgraded
Replaceable drive versus additional slot
A service manual may show that the existing drive is removable, that a second storage position is available, or both. These are different upgrade paths. Replacing the current drive changes the existing storage device; adding a drive requires a documented, unused slot and the required mounting or connection arrangement.

Interface and physical size
For an internal SSD, verify the interface and physical dimensions specified for the laptop. Drives that look similar are not automatically interchangeable. Acer cautions that similar-looking SSDs may not be interchangeable, so a picture or a generic “M.2” description is not a sufficient compatibility test.
Check the exact slot or bay description in the manufacturer’s documentation, including the supported interface, physical size, and any stated capacity limit. Only then compare a candidate drive with those requirements.
Internal versus external storage
An external SSD can add file storage when the laptop has no documented internal expansion or when you prefer not to open the computer. It is not an internal drive upgrade: the operating system’s original internal storage remains in place, and the external device connects outside the chassis. Keep that distinction clear when comparing laptops or planning a purchase.

How to use compatibility tools without being misled
A model selector is useful because it narrows a large parts catalog to candidates associated with your computer. It is most reliable when you enter the complete identifier rather than a shortened family name. Crucial’s guidance emphasizes accurate model selection because upgrades are not universal across computers.
The System Scanner provides another check by examining the computer’s current memory and storage. This can reveal the installed configuration and suggest compatible upgrades. However, a scanner result should still be compared with the laptop maker’s specification and service documentation for the exact configuration. A scanner cannot make an undocumented slot exist, and it cannot override a manufacturer’s stated interface or capacity limit.
- Copy the full identifier from the seller or the laptop’s official listing.
- Confirm the identifier on the manufacturer’s specification and service pages.
- Record the RAM arrangement, supported memory type, maximum capacity, and socket status.
- Record whether storage is replaceable or expandable, plus the interface and physical size.
- Run the identifier through a compatibility selector or scanner.
- Compare the suggested part with the manufacturer’s requirements before ordering.
Compare laptops by upgrade path, not by family name
When two or more laptops are under consideration, evaluate their RAM and storage paths independently. The following checklist keeps the comparison tied to facts that can be verified in documentation.
| Upgrade question | RAM | Internal storage |
|---|---|---|
| What can be physically changed? | Determine whether memory is soldered, socketed, or mixed. | Determine whether the existing drive is replaceable or an additional slot exists. |
| What must match? | Supported memory type and maximum capacity. | Interface, physical size, and any documented capacity limit. |
| What should the manual show? | Socket locations, occupied or free positions, and supported modules. | Drive bay or slot location, access instructions, and supported drive arrangement. |
| What does a compatibility lookup do? | Suggests candidate memory for the selected model. | Suggests candidate storage for the selected model. |
A laptop scores well for future expansion only when the exact configuration has a documented upgrade path. A family-level promise such as “supports more memory” is not enough for a purchase decision.

Three configurations you may encounter
Soldered RAM, replaceable internal SSD
In this configuration, choose the required memory capacity when buying because the RAM is fixed. Future storage changes may still be possible if the service manual documents a replaceable drive and specifies the supported interface and size.
Socketed RAM, no documented second storage slot
You may be able to add or replace memory while storage expansion requires replacing the existing drive. Do not interpret the available RAM socket as evidence that another internal drive can be installed.
Mixed memory, additional storage position
Only the socketed memory portion can be changed, and the total must remain within the model’s documented capacity. A second storage position can provide a separate expansion route, but it still requires the correct interface, physical size, and any mounting or connection parts named in the service documentation.
These are interpretation patterns, not specifications for a particular product. Confirm which pattern applies to the exact model before ordering anything.
What to buy after the documentation checks out
Compatible laptop RAM
Buy a module or kit only after the model’s memory arrangement, supported type, and capacity have been confirmed. If the documentation says memory is fully soldered, a removable RAM purchase will not create an upgrade path.
Compatible laptop SSD
Buy an internal SSD only after confirming that the drive is replaceable or that an additional slot exists. Match the interface and physical size as well as capacity. Do not assume every drive in a visually similar format will work.
External SSD
Choose external storage when internal upgradeability is absent, undocumented, or not worth opening the chassis. Present it accurately as additional external storage rather than a replacement for the laptop’s internal drive.
A final pre-purchase checklist
- Full model identifier, SKU, or machine type obtained from the seller.
- Exact manufacturer specification page located.
- Service or maintenance manual located and read for the relevant component.
- RAM classified as soldered, socketed, or mixed.
- RAM type, supported capacity, and socket status recorded.
- Storage classified as replaceable, expandable with an additional slot, or not documented as user-accessible.
- Storage interface and physical size recorded.
- Compatibility selector or scanner checked using the exact identifier.
- Candidate part compared against the manufacturer’s requirements.
- Internal and external storage options kept distinct.
Bottom line
You can upgrade a laptop later only when its exact configuration provides a supported upgrade path. Verify RAM and storage separately, use the manufacturer’s specifications and service manual as the authority, and use a compatibility selector as a secondary check. If the seller cannot provide the full identifier or the documentation does not confirm the slot, interface, and capacity you need, treat that upgrade as unverified and choose a configuration that already meets your requirements.
