Usually, no. Updating a jailbroken PS5 can remove homebrew access when the new system software is newer than the firmware supported by the exploit you rely on. The change is not safely reversible: Sony’s US software licence prohibits downgrading, and Sony says updates may block unauthorized software or hardware and may remove functionality. A September 29, 2026 scene report says the Relapse jailbreak covers PS5 and PS5 Pro firmware 7.00 through 13.60, but not 14.00. That is a dated third-party compatibility claim, not a Sony guarantee. Before installing anything, identify your exact firmware, identify the exploit and payload you use, and check their current documentation.
The practical answer
A jailbroken PS5 is not protected from official updates. If an update moves the console to a firmware outside the exploit’s supported range, the entry point may stop working and your homebrew launcher or payloads may no longer run. Even an update within a broad reported range does not guarantee that every homebrew application works, because exploits, entry points and payloads have separate compatibility limits.
There is no general “safe update” procedure that preserves a jailbreak. Sony’s official update process installs Sony system software; it is not a jailbreak-preservation method. Sony’s US licence also expressly prohibits reinstalling earlier system software, so you should assume that an update cannot be undone through an approved downgrade.

Why a PS5 update can remove homebrew
Exploit support is tied to firmware
A jailbreak is not a permanent modification that automatically follows the console through every system update. It uses a vulnerability or chain of vulnerabilities present in particular system-software versions. When Sony changes the affected code, alters system behavior or closes the entry point, the same procedure may fail on the newer version.
The project documentation for community jailbreak work describes multiple entry points and different firmware boundaries. Its compatibility table is a snapshot, not a promise that all methods or payloads work on all listed versions. The PS5CEMU-HAR HEN setup documentation and the PS5Dev UMTX Jailbreak README are specific to their respective projects; do not treat one project’s range as universal.
The latest reported Relapse boundary
PSN.GG reported on September 29, 2026 that Relapse works on firmware 7.00 through 13.60, including PS5 Pro, and does not work on 14.00. The report describes the jailbreak as tethered: a reboot removes the active jailbreak state, so the process must be run again. It also reports instability and possible data loss. Those statements come from a third-party scene report and can change as developers publish new payloads or Sony releases new firmware.

What Sony says an update can do
Sony’s US PS5 System Software Licence Agreement states that updates can contain security patches, new technology, revised settings and features that prevent unauthorized or pirated content or prevent unauthorized hardware or software from being used with the console. The agreement also warns that updates can cause data, feature or functionality loss. Sony’s own wording is:
“Services may include the latest update or download of a new release of System Software containing security patches, new technology or revised settings and features that may prevent access to unauthorized or pirated content or prevent use of unauthorized hardware or software in connection with your PS5 system.”
Read the PS5 System Software Licence Agreement (US) for the exact terms. They are US terms, not universal legal advice; other regions can have different wording. The agreement also prohibits specified unauthorized or modified software and hardware use and prohibits downgrading. In practical terms, do not update on the assumption that you can simply reinstall the previous firmware if the exploit stops working.
Decide before you connect the console to an update
Record the installed firmware
Write down the complete system-software version shown by the console before accepting an update. A major number alone is not enough: jailbreak reports commonly distinguish point releases, and a boundary such as 13.60 versus 14.00 matters.

Identify the exact exploit chain
Note the exploit or jailbreak name, the entry point it uses and the payload or homebrew loader you depend on. A console can be inside a reported firmware range while a particular payload remains unsupported. Use the project’s own compatibility notes rather than a repost or an old video.
Decide what you are willing to lose
- Stay on the current firmware if preserving a working exploit and offline homebrew is your primary goal.
- Update if access to Sony’s current software, security fixes, online services or newer game requirements is more important than retaining the exploit.
- Do not update yet if you cannot verify the target firmware, the exploit boundary or whether your essential payload supports it.
Do not confuse a console that has been exploited once with a permanently modified console. A tethered jailbreak must be re-run after a reboot, and a failed attempt can leave you without the environment you expected until the correct entry point is available again.
If you choose to remain on the jailbreak-friendly firmware
Prevent accidental updates
Keep automatic system-software downloads and installations from being accepted while you are checking compatibility. The exact menus and behavior can change between firmware versions, so rely on the settings available on your console and verify any prompt before confirming it. Do not install an update merely because it has already downloaded.
Plan for reboot-related loss of access
Because the reported Relapse method is tethered, a restart does not leave the active jailbreak in place. Treat a reboot, crash or power interruption as an event that requires the exploit to be run again. Save work frequently and avoid relying on a homebrew session as though it were persistent system software.

Protect important data
The September 29 report describes instability and possible data loss. Keep independent copies of irreplaceable saves or other personal data using methods that do not require the active jailbreak. A backup does not preserve exploit access, but it reduces the damage if a crash or failed operation corrupts data.
If you choose to update
Use only Sony’s documented method
Sony’s support page documents a USB procedure for a manual update. It calls for a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, approximately 1.1 GB of free space for the update file, and a precise folder and filename structure:
- Format the USB storage device as FAT32 or exFAT.
- Create a folder named
PS5at the drive’s top level. - Inside it, create a folder named
UPDATE. - Save Sony’s official update file in that folder as
PS5UPDATE.PUP. - Connect the USB drive to the PS5.
- Start the console in Safe Mode.
- Select Update System Software, then Update from USB Storage Device.
Follow the current instructions at Sony’s PS5 system-software update page. Sony warns against update data from other sources and methods outside its instructions. It says a modified console or unofficial update method may operate improperly and may affect warranty or repair services.
Understand what the official procedure cannot do
The USB workflow installs the selected official Sony package; it does not preserve an exploit, create a backup of the old firmware or provide a downgrade path. If the target version closes your entry point, completing the procedure can leave you with no working homebrew route. Read the target version’s compatibility information before placing the file on the drive.

Update versus staying put
| Priority | Staying on exploit-supported firmware | Installing a newer official update |
|---|---|---|
| Homebrew access | Best chance of retaining the currently documented entry point and payloads. | May close the exploit; access depends on whether a later method exists. |
| Reversibility | No official downgrade is needed, but you remain tied to the installed version. | Sony’s US terms prohibit downgrading, so assume the change is one-way. |
| Stability | The reported Relapse method is tethered and described as unstable, with possible data loss. | Official software follows Sony’s supported update path, but Sony warns updates can cause feature or functionality loss affecting unauthorized use. |
| Security and current features | You may miss later security patches, settings, fixes or features. | You receive the newer official system software and its associated changes. |
| Online and game compatibility | Newer games or services may require software you do not have. | More likely to meet current official software requirements, subject to Sony’s service rules. |
This table describes competing priorities, not a recommendation for every owner. A person preserving a research or homebrew setup may rationally stay offline on a supported version; a person who values current services may rationally accept the risk of losing the exploit.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Updating because the version “looks close.” Point releases can be the boundary. Compare the complete version number with the exploit’s current documentation.
- Assuming PS5 Pro support means universal support. The Relapse report includes PS5 Pro, but that does not establish support for every payload, model revision or other jailbreak.
- Following an old compatibility chart. The HEN documentation calls its table a snapshot. Recheck the project page immediately before changing firmware.
- Confusing a payload with the exploit. An entry point may run while a particular homebrew loader or application is not compatible. Verify each dependency.
- Using unofficial update files. Sony specifically warns against update data from other sources and methods outside its instructions.
- Expecting a downgrade rescue. Sony’s US agreement prohibits reinstalling earlier system software. Do not install first and investigate reversibility later.
- Ignoring tethered behavior. A reboot can remove the active jailbreak state. Save data and plan for the exploit to be run again.
How to check a compatibility claim responsibly
- Confirm the console’s exact firmware and model (standard PS5 or PS5 Pro).
- Open the documentation for the precise exploit, not just a general jailbreak list.
- Check the entry point’s firmware range and then check the payload or homebrew application separately.
- Check the publication date. A range reported on September 29, 2026 can change after a Sony release or a developer update.
- Look for explicit warnings about tethering, instability, data loss and unsupported versions.
- Only after those checks decide whether the benefits of Sony’s newer software outweigh the possibility of losing homebrew access.
For technical context, compare the project-maintained HEN setup notes with the exploit-specific UMTX README. Their scopes are different, so disagreement is a reason to investigate further, not permission to assume compatibility.
Bottom line for the 2026 firmware situation
Updating a jailbroken PS5 can remove homebrew access, and you should treat that outcome as permanent under Sony’s supported software path. The latest dated report available for this question places Relapse at firmware 7.00–13.60 and outside 14.00, describes it as tethered and warns of instability and possible data loss. Those are volatile community findings, not Sony promises. If preserving homebrew matters most, do not update until the exact target version and every required payload are confirmed. If current Sony software and services matter more, use Sony’s official procedure and accept that the exploit may be closed.
