Yes—but an old Kindle can act as a low-refresh e-ink side display, not as a conventional monitor that extends your desktop over a cable. One community project, Kindletron, sends screenshots from a host computer to a jailbroken Kindle with KUAL installed. Its documented default refresh interval is 60 seconds, so it is best for dashboards, notes, or mostly static information, not video or fast desktop work.
What “second monitor” means with a Kindle
Kindletron describes the Kindle as a wireless, low-refresh second screen. A host computer generates screenshots and serves them over a network; the Kindle retrieves those images. The display therefore updates periodically rather than behaving like a normal real-time desktop monitor. The project’s default screenshot refresh interval is 60 seconds, a configuration detail rather than a universal latency measurement. Kindletron project documentation
This can make sense for a clock, status panel, reference notes, or other information that can remain unchanged for a while. The project warns that video performs poorly and has substantial dropped frames. E-ink artifacts may also remain visible over the delivered image, including Kindle OS elements such as the clock and Wi-Fi symbol. Kindletron project documentation

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWhat the setup requires
- A Kindle model and firmware that are compatible with a jailbreak. Compatibility is model- and firmware-specific; the available documentation does not establish that every older Kindle works.
- A jailbroken Kindle with Kindle Unified Application Launcher (KUAL) installed, as required by Kindletron.
- A host computer able to take screenshots and run an HTTP server. Kindletron gives a Linux computer, including a Raspberry Pi, as an example; its documentation says the approach can be adapted to Mac OS or Microsoft WSL when the host can perform those functions.
- A network connection between the host and Kindle. USB is used in the documented setup to copy extension files, but that does not make the Kindle a standard wired monitor.
How to plan a model-specific build
- Identify the Kindle. Check the exact generation and firmware before selecting a jailbreak or client instructions. Amazon’s Kindle E-Reader User and Quick Start Guides index can help locate the manual for a device; it does not certify jailbreak or third-party display compatibility.
- Choose the approach for that hardware. Kindletron’s documented route assumes a jailbroken Kindle with KUAL and a host for its screenshot-and-server workflow. Do not assume a procedure for one Paperwhite or Kindle 3 applies to another generation.
- Follow the project’s current instructions. Kindletron describes a VNC desktop instance, screenshotter scripts, an HTTP server, and a Kindle client extension. Its client setup copies extension files over USB and configures the Kindle script with the host URL. Consult the project documentation for the applicable files and configuration rather than treating this overview as a universal install recipe.
- Restrict access to the screenshot server. The project warns that anyone who can reach the server may be able to view its screenshots. Keep it on a trusted network and apply access controls; the project also discusses firewall or network restrictions and SSH tunneling for sensitive use.
- Pick content that tolerates slow updates. Use information that remains useful between refreshes and is readable despite e-ink and OS artifacts; the documented default is one update per minute.
How this differs from older Kindle display projects
There is no current controlled comparison of the different approaches in the cited sources, but their hardware and connection methods differ:

| Kindletron | Jailbroken Kindle with KUAL; networked host that produces and serves screenshots. A Raspberry Pi is one example, not a requirement. | Undated project documentation gives a 60-second default refresh interval, warns about video performance and OS artifacts, and notes the screenshot server’s access risk. | Kindleberry Pi, Paperwhite version | Historical wireless setup using a Paperwhite. | The 2013 account says the Paperwhite refreshed faster than the older keyboard Kindle, but it does not provide a current, directly comparable benchmark. Is “in under an hour” a realistic expectation?
There is no sourced timing benchmark for this conversion, so under an hour should be treated as an individual experience, not a general promise. The work depends on the exact Kindle and firmware, whether a compatible jailbreak and KUAL setup are available, and how much host configuration is needed. The cited sources also do not establish a universal compatibility rate or a single procedure that works across generations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What “de-Amazoned” does—and does not—mean here
The documented process involves jailbreaking the Kindle and running third-party display software. That supports calling the device modified or repurposed; it does not establish that Amazon software or services were completely removed. Nor does the screenshot workflow turn the Kindle into a conventional external display with a direct video connection.
