Yes—if you mean without a Game Boy Advance console. Nintendo’s documented legacy method uses a Nintendo DS or DS Lite with a Game Boy Advance cartridge slot, a supported GBA Pokémon Game Pak, and Pokémon Platinum’s Pal Park. You cannot use that method without any hardware that accepts the original GBA cartridge, and Nintendo’s current instructions do not document a direct import from an original GBA cartridge to Pokémon HOME.
The short answer depends on what “original hardware” means
There are two different situations hidden in the question:
- No Game Boy Advance console, but you still have the cartridge: potentially possible. A Nintendo DS or DS Lite can play GBA games and can provide the cartridge slot required for the Pal Park migration described in Nintendo’s Pokémon Platinum manual.
- No device with a GBA cartridge slot at all: the official route reviewed here does not show a way to read an original GBA cartridge and send its save directly to Pokémon HOME.
The original-cartridge process is not a modern HOME import. It is a staged, legacy migration that starts in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, or LeafGreen, moves into Pokémon Platinum through Pal Park, and then depends on later compatible games and services for any further transfer. The Switch versions of FireRed and LeafGreen use a different HOME workflow and do not read the save on an original GBA cartridge.

What the official GBA-cartridge route requires
Nintendo’s Pokémon Platinum manual identifies five GBA games as Pal Park sources: Pokémon Ruby, Pokémon Sapphire, Pokémon Emerald, Pokémon FireRed, and Pokémon LeafGreen. The procedure is tied to the physical Game Pak, not merely to having a copy of the game’s save data.

| Requirement | What it means |
|---|---|
| Supported source cartridge | An original Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, or LeafGreen GBA Game Pak. |
| Generation IV destination | Pokémon Platinum, with its DS Game Card inserted in the DS Game Card slot. |
| Pal Park access | Platinum’s National Pokédex must have been obtained before migration is available. |
| GBA-capable handheld | A Nintendo DS or DS Lite, or another system that physically provides the required GBA cartridge slot. Nintendo confirms DS and DS Lite GBA game support. |
| Eligible Pokémon | Pokémon cannot be holding Mail or know a hidden move when you attempt the migration. |
A DS Lite is therefore a possible substitute for a GBA console at the cartridge step. It is only one component of the setup: you still need a supported GBA Game Pak, Platinum with Pal Park unlocked, and the additional compatible games and services required for any later transfer.
How Pal Park moves Pokémon from the original cartridge
The Platinum manual describes the migration as a two-cartridge process. Platinum occupies the DS Game Card slot while the GBA Pokémon cartridge occupies the handheld’s GBA cartridge slot. Once the game recognizes both, the transferred Pokémon become available at Pal Park in Platinum, where you catch them again.
- Complete Platinum’s National Pokédex requirement. Pal Park migration is not available at the start of the game. Obtain the National Pokédex first.
- Prepare the Pokémon in the GBA game. Remove Mail from every Pokémon selected for migration. Check their moves and replace any hidden move the manual excludes. Keep the source cartridge available; the process acts on that Game Pak.
- Power off and insert both games. Put the Pokémon Platinum DS Game Card in the DS Game Card slot. Put Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, or LeafGreen in the GBA cartridge slot of the DS or DS Lite.
- Start the migration option in Platinum. Follow the on-screen Pal Park instructions to select the eligible Pokémon from the GBA game.
- Go to Pal Park and catch the migrated Pokémon. The Pokémon do not simply appear in your party. Pal Park is the destination where you catch each one after initiating the transfer.
- Verify the result before changing anything else. Check that the Pokémon are in Platinum and that the intended selections arrived before proceeding to another transfer stage.
The transfer is one-way. Nintendo states that migrated Pokémon disappear from the original GBA Game Pak and cannot be sent back to that game. Do not begin with Pokémon you want to keep in the GBA title unless you have another copy or have accepted that the original entries will be removed.

What a DS or DS Lite can—and cannot—replace
Nintendo’s support documentation says that Nintendo DS and DS Lite systems can play GBA games in single-player mode. That makes either model useful when the missing item is a working GBA console. The handheld still needs the physical GBA slot, and the Pal Park process still needs the Platinum card and a supported GBA Pokémon cartridge.
The same support information lists important limitations. DS and DS Lite systems cannot play original Game Boy or Game Boy Color games, and they do not have the cable port used for GBA multiplayer. Those limits matter if “Game Boy Advance game” is being used loosely for an older Game Boy title, or if you expect a DS to replace link-cable features. A DS-family system with a slot is a substitute for the console used to run the cartridge; it is not a universal replacement for every accessory or every older Nintendo handheld.
Original GBA cartridge versus Switch FireRed or LeafGreen
Current Nintendo HOME instructions also cover the Switch releases of Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen. That is a separate source format and a separate workflow. Selecting a GBA game in the Switch version of HOME does not mean HOME is reading an original FireRed or LeafGreen cartridge.

| Question | Original GBA cartridge | Switch FireRed/LeafGreen release |
|---|---|---|
| Source media | Physical GBA Game Pak containing the original game save. | Switch game release handled through Nintendo’s current HOME instructions. |
| First transfer step | DS or DS Lite cartridge-slot setup, then Pal Park in Pokémon Platinum. | HOME workflow for the Switch release. |
| Does it import the other source’s save? | Not documented as a direct HOME import. | Not documented as a reader for an original GBA cartridge save. |
| Can the move be reversed? | No. Pal Park removes the Pokémon from the source Game Pak. | Nintendo’s instructions say Pokémon moved from the Switch releases cannot be moved back to those games. |
| Timing concern | Later legacy services may be needed for onward transfers. | Uses the currently documented HOME process, subject to Nintendo’s service rules. |
Do not buy or borrow a Switch copy expecting it to recover a save from an original cartridge. The two workflows begin with different software and storage formats.

Can the Pokémon eventually reach Pokémon HOME?
The official material establishes the Pal Park move from an original GBA cartridge into Platinum, but it does not document a direct original-cartridge-to-HOME import. Getting those Pokémon farther than Platinum requires a chain of compatible later-generation games and Nintendo services; the exact availability of each link matters.
Pokémon Bank is especially time-sensitive. Nintendo announced that Pokémon Bank service and Bank-to-HOME transfers end on February 25, 2027, at 7:00 p.m. Pacific Time. Nintendo also says Pokémon Bank is no longer available to download. That deadline is a service cutoff, not a guarantee that every legacy migration step will work for every account, console, region, or game combination.

Nintendo’s compatibility information lists the games supported by Poké Transporter and Pokémon Bank, but it does not list original GBA cartridges as direct Poké Transporter sources. In practical terms, the original cartridge should be treated as the start of a legacy chain, not as a source that HOME can scan by itself. Confirm that you have every required intermediate game and service before performing the irreversible Pal Park step.
A decision checklist before you start
- Identify the source. Is it Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, or LeafGreen on an original GBA Game Pak? If it is a Switch release, follow the separate HOME instructions instead.
- Check the handheld. You need a DS or DS Lite—or another demonstrably compatible system—with a working GBA cartridge slot. A DSi-family system without that slot cannot perform this specific two-cartridge setup.
- Confirm Platinum’s progress. The destination game must have the National Pokédex and access to Pal Park.
- Audit the Pokémon. Remove Mail and replace any hidden move that makes a Pokémon ineligible under the Platinum manual.
- Plan for one-way movement. Once migration completes, the Pokémon disappear from the GBA Game Pak and cannot return.
- Map the onward route. If HOME is your goal, check the required later games and services now, particularly because Bank-to-HOME transfers end on February 25, 2027, at 7:00 p.m. Pacific Time.
- Preserve your originals. Use the exact cartridges and systems you intend to keep. Do not assume a replacement cartridge, downloaded Switch title, or unrelated Game Boy model contains the same save.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming HOME can read the cartridge directly
The reviewed Nintendo instructions do not establish direct HOME import from an original GBA Game Pak. Start with the documented Pal Park stage instead of treating the cartridge as a HOME-connected device.
Using the wrong handheld
“Nintendo DS” is not enough by itself. The migration setup needs the GBA cartridge slot. Verify the model and slot before buying a used handheld. Nintendo’s DS/DS Lite support statement also does not promise compatibility with original Game Boy or Game Boy Color cartridges.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Skipping the National Pokédex
Pal Park is locked until Platinum’s National Pokédex requirement is met. If the migration option is missing, check that milestone before blaming the cartridge or handheld.
Leaving Mail or a hidden move on a Pokémon
The Platinum manual excludes Pokémon holding Mail or knowing a hidden move. Prepare the entire selection in the GBA game before inserting both cartridges.
Expecting a rollback
Pal Park is not a copy operation. Nintendo says the Pokémon disappear from the original Game Pak and cannot go back. Make the decision only after confirming that the Pokémon are the ones you want to move.
Confusing Switch releases with original cartridges
The Switch FireRed/LeafGreen workflow is not evidence that HOME can import a GBA cartridge save. Treat the releases as separate source platforms with separate transfer directions.
Bottom line for a cartridge owner without a GBA console
You may not need a Game Boy Advance console. A DS or DS Lite with a GBA slot can perform the documented cartridge step through Pokémon Platinum’s Pal Park, provided you have a supported GBA Pokémon game, Platinum’s National Pokédex, and eligible Pokémon. The migration is permanent on the source cartridge.
If you have no GBA-slot hardware, Nintendo’s documented material does not provide a direct original-cartridge-to-HOME method. The Switch releases of FireRed and LeafGreen do not import original cartridge saves, and any eventual HOME plan must account for the legacy transfer chain and the February 25, 2027 Bank-to-HOME cutoff.
