No. A Switch 2 microSD Express card cannot hold, copy, or move game save data. Nintendo stores Switch 2 saves in the console’s system memory, whether the game is downloaded or played from a game card. The card is expanded storage for downloadable software, updates, downloadable content, screenshots, and videos.
To move progress from an original Switch, use Nintendo’s system-transfer tools, an eligible individual save transfer, or Save Data Cloud where the game and account qualify. Copying the old Switch microSD card will not migrate installed games or saves.
What a Switch 2 microSD Express card can—and cannot—store
The card is an expansion device, not a migration container for every kind of Switch data. Nintendo separates software storage from save storage:

| Downloaded games | System memory or a compatible microSD Express card | Yes, after the software is downloaded to the new console. |
| Game updates and DLC | System memory or the compatible card | Yes. |
| Screenshots and video | System memory or the compatible card | Yes; media from an old Switch card may be imported during setup. |
| Physical game-card software | The game card supplies the game; updates and DLC may use storage | The card does not contain the save. |
Switch 2 accepts microSD Express cards that meet Nintendo’s supported standard, with capacities up to 2 TB. Cards are sold separately. A larger card gives you room for more software and recordings, but it does not increase the space available for game saves because saves remain in system memory.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Why copying your old Switch microSD card does not work
Original Switch microSD cards are not compatible with Switch 2 for game data. The installed-game folders on an old card are not a transferable library that Switch 2 can simply adopt. Digital ownership is associated with your Nintendo Account, and the software must be downloaded for the new console after the account and console transfer process.
Nintendo does allow a narrower exception for personal media: during a supported console move, screenshots and videos stored on the old card may be imported into Switch 2 system memory. That media import should not be confused with moving installed games or saves. Do not erase the old console or format its card until you have checked that the photos and recordings you want are present on the target system.
Choose the transfer method that matches your situation
| Method | Best use | Save-data result | Important conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| System transfer to Switch 2 | Moving your account, settings, digital software and supported data during setup | Handled according to the selected local or server process and the support status of each user and game | Internet is required. Digital software is downloaded after setup. Some server-transfer operations initialize the source console after upload. |
| Individual nearby save transfer | Moving selected progress instead of the whole console | The selected save moves from the source to the target; it is not copied to a card | Nintendo Switch Online is not required. Both consoles need internet, must be nearby, and the relevant users must be linked to the same Nintendo Account. |
| Save Data Cloud | Backing up and restoring supported games across consoles | A supported backup can be downloaded on another console | Requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and a title that supports cloud backup. |
| Virtual Game Card | Loading an eligible digital game on another linked system | Does not move or synchronize the save by itself | Game loading and save transfer are separate operations. |
| microSD Express card | Adding storage for Switch 2 software and media | Cannot store or transfer saves | Use a supported microSD Express card; Nintendo states a maximum supported capacity of 2 TB. |
There is no single method that guarantees identical treatment for every title. Games without Save Data Cloud support, and users who are not linked as required, can follow different transfer rules. Check Nintendo’s current instructions for a named game before deleting the source data.

How to move everything during Switch 2 setup
Use the system-transfer workflow when you are replacing an original Switch with a Switch 2 and want the broadest supported move.

Prepare both consoles
- Install the latest available system updates on both consoles before starting.
- Connect both systems to reliable internet and keep their power connected for the duration of the move.
- Have the Nintendo Account credentials available. Each user whose saves matter should be linked correctly before transfer.
- Keep the original console, its game cards and its old microSD card until you have verified the result.
- If you plan to install many digital games, have a compatible microSD Express card ready for the Switch 2. It is optional for the transfer itself.
Run the transfer shown during initial setup
- Start the Switch 2 and choose the system-transfer option when the initial setup presents it.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to prepare the original Switch as the source and the Switch 2 as the destination. Keep the consoles close enough for the prompted local connection and online checks.
- Review the explanation of local versus server transfer. Nintendo’s local process handles supported data between the two consoles. A server transfer uploads data first and can initialize the source console after the upload, so read every warning before confirming.
- Allow the transfer to finish without powering off either system. Digital purchases are not all copied as finished installations; after setup, the Switch 2 downloads the digital software associated with your account, so leave it online.
- Open the games you care about and verify their users and progress on the Switch 2 before resetting, selling or giving away the original console.
A system transfer does not turn the old microSD card into a Switch 2 card. It moves the eligible account and console data through Nintendo’s transfer process, while the new console obtains digital software through your account and an internet connection.
How to move only selected saves
If you are keeping both consoles or need progress from only a few games, use Nintendo’s individual nearby save-transfer feature instead of moving the whole system.
- Update both consoles and connect each to the internet.
- Place the consoles near one another and sign in with the same Nintendo Account linked to the users whose saves are being moved.
- Open the save-data transfer function on the consoles and designate the source and target systems as instructed.
- Select the game and user save to move. Confirm the warning: the operation moves the save from the source to the target rather than creating a card backup.
- Wait for completion, then launch the game on Switch 2 and check the progress before making any changes on the original system.
Nintendo says this nearby transfer does not require Nintendo Switch Online. Internet access, proximity and the matching account link are still required. If a title or user does not appear as eligible, do not assume that copying files manually will solve it; use the title’s current Nintendo support guidance.

On the original console, create or confirm a current cloud backup for the supported title. On Switch 2, sign in to the same Nintendo Account and download that backup through the save-data cloud controls. Check the game’s support status first: a title that does not support Save Data Cloud cannot be made compatible by putting its files on a microSD card.
Cloud backup also does not make the microSD Express card a save destination. The cloud service and the card solve different problems: one stores an eligible save remotely, while the other stores software and media locally.
Virtual Game Cards do not transfer progress
Virtual Game Cards let eligible digital games be loaded or ejected between linked systems. This can make a purchased game available on another system without treating the software installation as a save transfer. After loading the game, the target console still needs the appropriate save through system transfer, an individual save move, or cloud restoration.

What to do with the old Switch card
If it contains installed games
Do not expect those installations to launch on Switch 2. Leave the card in the original console until the account transfer and digital re-downloads are complete, then preserve or reformat it only after confirming that you no longer need its contents.
If it contains screenshots or videos
Use the media-import option offered during the supported setup process. The imported files go into Switch 2 system memory; they are not evidence that game saves or software installations were transferred.
If you want to reuse storage on Switch 2
Buy a microSD Express card that meets Nintendo’s standard. An original Switch card is not the supported format for Switch 2 game data. Format or prepare the new card only when Switch 2 prompts you, and keep a separate copy of irreplaceable media before any formatting operation.
Troubleshooting common transfer problems
“My game downloaded, but my progress is missing.”
Confirm that you transferred the same user who created the save. If the title supports Save Data Cloud, restore the latest backup. Otherwise, use individual nearby save transfer or the relevant system-transfer path. A successful game download proves ownership was recognized; it does not prove that the save moved.

“The old microSD card is not recognized.”
That behavior is expected for old Switch game data. Switch 2 requires microSD Express for supported card storage. Use Nintendo’s setup media-import process for screenshots and videos instead of copying game folders.
“The game is not eligible for cloud backup.”
Cloud support is title-specific. Use the nearby individual save-transfer feature or the supported system-transfer route if the game qualifies. If Nintendo lists the title as unsupported for those methods, contact Nintendo support before erasing the source console; do not rely on a microSD card as a workaround.
“The transfer asks to initialize the old console.”
Stop and review the on-screen explanation. Server transfer can initialize the source after data is uploaded. Verify that the target console has the users and saves you need before accepting an irreversible step, and retain the original until that verification is complete.

Capacity does not change Nintendo’s save architecture. Even a supported card up to 2 TB stores downloadable software, updates, DLC and media; save data remains in system memory.
Practical checklist before you erase the original Switch
- Every required Nintendo Account is linked to the correct user.
- The transfer method used matches the game’s save-support status.
- Digital games have begun downloading on Switch 2.
- At least one test launch confirms that progress is present for each important title.
- Wanted screenshots and videos are visible on Switch 2 or backed up elsewhere.
- You understand whether the chosen transfer will remove data from the source.
- You have not mistaken a virtual game card or a microSD Express installation for a save transfer.
The key distinction is simple: Nintendo’s transfer services move eligible saves, while the microSD Express card expands Switch 2 storage. Treating the card as a save container risks losing progress when the old console is reset or discarded.
