Usually, no: a game purchase stays with the store account or platform where you bought it. Copying its files to another launcher, linking accounts, or adding it to Steam as a shortcut does not transfer ownership. You may be able to move or copy the files to save time, but the destination still needs to recognize a valid purchase. Saves, DLC, and progression have separate, game-specific rules.
What “transferring a game” can mean
The word “transfer” often describes several different things. Separating them helps you identify what is possible before moving files or linking accounts. The key question is whether you want to move your right to play, the local installation, a library entry, or game-specific data. Those are separate tasks and may have different answers.
- Purchase entitlement: The store or account that recognizes your purchase and authorizes you to play. This is what generally does not move to another storefront.
- Installed files: The game data stored on a drive. You may be able to move or copy it, but the launcher must still verify the installation and your account must have permission to play.
- Library shortcut: A convenient entry in another launcher. It does not make that launcher the seller or owner of the game.
- Game data and add-ons: Saves, cross-progression, DLC, currency, and account-linked unlocks. Each can follow different rules from the base-game purchase.
Epic Games Store Support states that “Ownership does not transfer between platforms,” and says games purchased on another platform cannot be played through the Epic Games Launcher. Rockstar provides a separate example: its support information says launcher entitlements are connected to the purchasing account and are non-transferable between Rockstar accounts. Those are concrete publisher policies, not proof that every publisher handles every game identically; check the specific title’s official support information for exceptions.

That distinction matters even when two launchers can see the same folder. A folder is data on your drive; an entitlement is the account-side permission to launch the game. A shortcut, account link, or file copy may help with convenience or setup, but none is evidence that the receiving storefront has granted a second license.

What can you do for each goal?
| Your goal | What may work | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| See a game in one launcher | Add a shortcut if that launcher supports it. Steam allows non-Steam games in its Library. | It does not transfer ownership, establish Steam ownership, or make Steam deliver updates for the game. |
| Move a game to another folder or drive | Use the owning launcher’s documented move or verification process. | It does not convert the installation into a different storefront’s version or entitlement. |
| Set up another PC without downloading every file again | Steam supports local network copying of existing Steam game and update files between PCs when its settings and conditions allow. | It copies files; it does not transfer the purchase to another account or launcher. |
| Play a purchase from a different storefront | Sign in to the account and launcher associated with that purchase, unless the publisher documents a title-specific alternative. | Do not assume a Steam purchase can be launched as a Battle.net purchase, or vice versa. The available sources do not establish a current Battle.net-wide transfer policy. |
| Keep saves, DLC, or progression | Check the title’s current rules for cross-save, cross-progression, account linking, and add-ons. | Neither linked accounts nor copied files guarantee that this content transfers. |
Think of the options in two dimensions: same launcher or different storefront, and same PC or another PC. A supported move within Steam or Epic changes where that launcher’s files live. A local network transfer can help copy Steam files to another PC. Neither is a storefront-to-storefront purchase transfer. A portable drive is another way to carry files, but it has the same limitation: it moves data, not a license.
Can you move a game from Battle.net to Steam—or Steam to Battle.net?
Do not assume you can move a purchase from Battle.net to Steam or from Steam to Battle.net. A file copy may help avoid downloading data again, but it does not make the receiving store recognize a purchase made elsewhere. The official material available here establishes Steam’s shortcut limitations and Epic’s explicit restriction on playing other-platform purchases through Epic; it does not establish a general current Battle.net transfer policy.

For a specific game, check the publisher’s official support page and the account that owns the purchase. Confirm whether the publisher offers a migration or cross-entitlement option for that exact title. If no official option is documented, plan to launch the game through the account and storefront where you bought it. Do not treat an option that applies to another title from the same publisher as proof that your game qualifies.
Epic’s guidance is explicit about its own launcher: “Games purchased from another platform (such as Steam, Origin, or Ubisoft Connect) cannot be played through the Epic Games Launcher.” That is useful evidence for Epic’s policy, but it should not be generalized into an undocumented claim about Battle.net or every other store. For a question involving Battle.net, look up the exact game and its current publisher instructions rather than relying on a universal rule.

How to add a non-Steam game to your Steam Library
Steam’s non-Steam feature is useful when you want a game’s shortcut alongside your Steam games. Steam Support describes the result plainly: “This will only add a shortcut to your game in the Steam client.” It is not a purchase transfer.
- Open the Steam client and choose Add a Game in the lower-left corner.
- Select Add a Non-Steam Game.
- Select the game or its launcher from the list, or use the browse option to locate the program file.
- Choose Add Selected Programs. The entry appears in your Steam Library as a shortcut.
Steam’s support page notes that it will not provide updates for a game added this way. The game’s own launcher or store remains responsible for recognizing your purchase and handling its updates. The shortcut also does not establish Steam ownership: it is a way to start the program from Steam, not a Steam license or a replacement for the game’s original launcher requirements.

How to move game files without transferring ownership
Move an existing Steam installation
Steam documents moving installations within Steam. Its supported approach uses a different Steam Library folder and verifies the installed game files; it is not a way to change which storefront owns the game. This is the relevant route when you want to relocate a Steam installation to a different drive on the same PC, not when you want to turn it into a Battle.net or Epic purchase.
- In Steam, open Settings, then go to Storage.
- Create or select a library folder on the destination drive.
- In the Steam Library, open the game’s properties and use the installed-files or storage controls to move the installation to that library.
- After the move, let Steam verify the game files if prompted. If the game does not appear installed, use Steam’s install flow for the same library so it can discover or validate existing files.
Exact labels can vary as Steam updates its client. Follow the current controls shown in your installed version rather than treating a copied folder alone as a completed installation. Verification is the important distinction between merely putting data in a directory and having the owning launcher recognize the installation.

Move an Epic-installed game to a different directory
Epic documents moving an Epic-installed game to another directory while continuing to use the Epic Games Launcher. The procedure concerns the location of the installation, not a transfer from Epic to Steam or another store. Follow Epic’s current instructions for the game and launcher version; do not treat the moved files as a new entitlement. The distinction is the same as with Steam: the supported procedure is for an installation that remains associated with its original launcher.
Copy Steam files to another PC over your local network
Steam supports local network transfers of existing Steam installation and update files between PCs when the feature’s settings and conditions allow. This can reduce redownloading, but the destination still needs access to the Steam account entitled to play the game. Check Steam’s instructions for the required client settings and eligibility conditions before relying on a network copy. This is a same-store file-copy option across PCs, not a way to move ownership to another account or launcher.

Use portable storage only for the files
You can also use an external drive to carry or back up local game files. An external SSD may be a practical option for moving a large installation, but it is optional; Steam’s documented move and network-copy features are alternatives. A drive carries files only. The launcher that sold the game still needs to verify the installation, and a different storefront will not unlock its version just because it can see the files. Keep the original installation until the supported destination workflow has recognized and verified what you copied, if you are using a file-move process.
Will saves, DLC, or progression transfer?
There is no universal rule established for saves, DLC, currency, or account-linked unlocks. A game may support cross-progression or cross-save while keeping purchases tied to a storefront; another may handle add-ons or linked accounts differently. Check the publisher’s current page for the specific game and the specific content type. Do not infer that a base-game purchase, save file, or DLC follows you simply because you linked accounts or copied the installation.
Check these separately rather than asking only whether “the game” transfers: can you launch the base game on the other platform, does the game support cross-save or cross-progression, and are DLC or currency available on the destination platform? Official publisher guidance cited here does not establish universal answers to those questions, so confirm each one on the title’s official support page. A yes for account linking or progress syncing does not necessarily mean a yes for ownership or add-on purchases.
Epic’s cross-platform support guidance distinguishes platform ownership from playing through its launcher, but it does not establish a universal rule for every publisher’s saves or add-ons. Source: Epic Games Store support.

- Assuming a shortcut changes ownership: A Steam Library entry for a non-Steam game is only a shortcut.
- Deleting the original installation too soon: Keep the source files until the destination launcher has recognized and verified its installation, if you are moving files within a supported workflow.
- Expecting a copied folder to unlock another store’s version: Files are not proof of purchase. Sign in to the account that owns the entitlement.
- Assuming account linking moves everything: Check separate rules for the base game, save data, DLC, and progression.
- Treating launcher-specific instructions as universal: Steam and Epic document their own file workflows; those procedures do not establish a cross-store conversion process.
- Assuming all Battle.net games have the same transfer answer: The available official guidance cited here does not establish a current Battle.net-wide policy. Verify the particular game’s official guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I move a game from Battle.net to Steam?
Usually, you should not expect a Battle.net purchase to become a Steam purchase. A file copy may help avoid downloading data again, but does not transfer the entitlement. Check the specific game’s official support page for any documented exception; the available official guidance cited here does not establish a general current Battle.net transfer policy.

Can I transfer a Steam game to another launcher?
A Steam purchase generally remains associated with the account and storefront where it was bought. Steam’s non-Steam library feature only adds a shortcut; it does not establish Steam ownership in another launcher or make that launcher provide updates.
Can I move my game files to a new PC without downloading again?
Steam supports local network copying of existing Steam game and update files between PCs when its settings and conditions allow. This copies files, not ownership, and the destination still needs access to an account entitled to play the game. Check Steam’s current instructions for the required settings and eligibility.
If I add a non-Steam game to Steam, do I own it on Steam?
No. Steam says the feature adds only a shortcut to the game in the Steam client. The original store or launcher remains responsible for recognizing the purchase and delivering updates.
Will linking accounts transfer my saves or DLC?
Not necessarily. Saves, cross-progression, DLC, currency, and account-linked unlocks have title-specific rules. Check the publisher’s current guidance for the exact game and content type rather than inferring that they transfer from account linking or copied files.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Moving or copying game files is not the same as transferring a purchase. Use the owning launcher’s documented move or verification process for storage changes, Steam’s local network feature when setting up another PC, and a Steam shortcut only for convenience. For another storefront, saves, or DLC, verify the specific game’s official rules before assuming anything transfers.
