For customers in the United States, you cannot newly switch from a carrier plan into Apple’s iPhone Upgrade Program. Apple says the U.S. program is ending. If you already have a Citizens One loan through the program, you can continue making its scheduled payments; changing wireless service does not cancel that loan.
For a new iPhone, compare Apple’s current alternatives—Apple Upgrade, Apple Card Monthly Installments when Apple confirms you are eligible, paying Apple in full, or carrier financing—after checking your carrier’s remaining device balance, promotional credits, unlock rules, and service obligations.
What the proposed “switch” actually involves
The phrase “switch from a carrier iPhone plan” can describe three different contracts. Treating them as one account is the most common source of unexpected bills.
Your wireless service plan
This is the cellular service attached to your phone number and data allowance. It covers calls, messages, data, taxes, and any service discounts. You can often change or cancel service separately from how the phone itself was financed, subject to the carrier’s agreement.

A carrier device installment agreement
If you obtained the iPhone from a carrier, you may still owe monthly installments on the handset. A carrier promotion may also provide monthly bill credits that continue only while you keep a specified line, plan, or trade-in arrangement. Moving to another plan, canceling a line, or switching carriers can change the payoff amount and stop future credits. Only your carrier can state the exact balance and conditions on your account.
Apple’s former iPhone Upgrade Program loan
The U.S. iPhone Upgrade Program was a separate Apple device loan, historically made by Citizens Bank, N.A., doing business as Citizens One. It was not a wireless service plan and did not automatically take over a carrier installment balance.
U.S. program status in October 2026
Apple’s current U.S. iPhone Upgrade Program page says the program is ending. Apple’s July 2026 announcement also describes the end of the U.S. iPhone Upgrade Program and iPhone Payments. That status means a person who is not already enrolled should not expect to open a new iPhone Upgrade Program loan by changing carriers or transferring a financed phone.

Existing members are different. Apple says an enrolled customer may keep paying the existing Citizens One loan through its stated term. There is no need to stop payments or change the loan merely because Apple is ending new enrollment. Apple provides choices for obtaining a next device, but those choices require their own eligibility, credit, trade-in, lease, or carrier conditions.

- Titanium frame combines strength and lightness, giving the iPhone 16 Pro a premium feel while reducing weight for prolonged daily use. The polished edges and textured back enhance grip and handling, making it easier to use during long calls, gaming sessions, or when capturing photos and videos on the move.
- Find the current device balance. In your carrier account, open the device or installment section and record the remaining principal, number of payments, and any stated payoff amount.
- Identify promotional credits. Note the monthly credit, the number of credits already received, the credits still expected, and the event that ends them. A promotion may require a particular plan, line, trade-in, or period of service.
- Read the carrier’s unlock status. Apple’s buying guidance warns that a carrier-financed iPhone may remain locked until it is paid in full. The carrier’s own policy controls your device, so ask whether payoff, account standing, or another requirement is necessary.
- Check the service agreement. Look for activation fees, taxes due at purchase, line-cancellation charges, contract commitments, and requirements to keep an old line active while credits are issued.
- Separate the phone from the number. Ask whether you are keeping your number, moving it to another carrier, or changing only the handset. A number transfer does not by itself pay off a device loan.
- Confirm account and credit requirements. Apple financing and carrier financing can require approval. The information available here does not establish your personal credit eligibility or payoff amount.
Current ways to obtain your next iPhone
| Option | What you pay for | Ownership or return | Carrier and unlock considerations | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Upgrade | A lease arranged through Klarna, with eligibility and approval requirements | Review the lease term, total payments, upgrade or return conditions, and early-termination cost; do not assume the phone becomes yours without checking the lease | Apple’s 2026 announcement names AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon as eligible carriers; prepaid service is excluded. Apple says leased iPhones are unlocked, subject to carrier terms | Monthly payment, lease length, return condition, insurance or protection requirements, and what happens if you leave the eligible carrier |
| Apple Card Monthly Installments | An installment purchase through Apple Card for customers Apple says are eligible | Confirm the current installment and ownership terms presented at checkout | Check activation and carrier requirements in the purchase flow | Whether your existing program account qualifies, approval, taxes due at purchase, and the transition process. Apple says some existing-member transitions require in-store assistance |
| Pay Apple in full | The full purchase price at checkout | You own the phone immediately | Apple’s buying guidance says an iPhone purchased directly from Apple with an Apple financing option is unlocked; confirm the exact purchase and activation flow | Up-front price, taxes, trade-in credit, carrier activation, and whether you are transferring an existing number |
| Carrier financing | A new carrier device installment agreement, often alongside wireless service | You follow the carrier’s installment and trade-in terms | Apple says an iPhone financed through AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon may remain locked until paid in full | Remaining balance on the old phone, promotional-credit forfeiture, service commitment, payoff rules, and unlock policy |
Step-by-step: move from a carrier-financed iPhone to a new arrangement
1. Decide whether you are changing service, the phone payment, or both
Write down the intended change in one sentence, such as “Keep my number and carrier, replace the handset,” “Move my number to another carrier and buy an unlocked iPhone,” or “Leave my carrier and use an Apple lease.” This prevents a service cancellation from being mistaken for a device payoff.
2. Request an account-level payoff and promotion explanation
Use the carrier’s app, website, or support channel to ask for the payoff amount as of the date you plan to change, the exact date any promotion credits stop, and the unlock requirements. Ask for the answer in writing. A general advertising offer cannot determine the balance on your particular line.

3. Choose how the new iPhone will be paid for
Use the comparison above to select Apple Upgrade, an Apple Card installment route if Apple confirms eligibility, an outright purchase, or carrier financing. Compare total expected payments rather than only the advertised monthly amount. Include taxes, activation charges, remaining old-phone payments, lost credits, and any required service.
4. Decide what happens to the old iPhone
If you still owe the carrier, ask whether it must be paid before a trade-in, whether the carrier will accept it while installments remain, and whether a trade-in promotion changes the old balance. Do not assume that handing over the phone extinguishes the loan. If you sell it privately, keep making the agreed payments unless the lender confirms payoff.
5. Preserve your number and data deliberately
If you are changing carriers, start the number transfer while the old line is still active and follow the new carrier’s activation instructions. Back up the iPhone, know your Apple Account credentials, and disable Activation Lock only when the phone is being returned or traded in. Apple’s buying guidance describes activation assistance and keeping an existing number and data when purchasing directly from Apple; the exact steps still depend on the carrier and purchase flow.

6. Complete the new approval and activation
Apple Upgrade, Apple Card Monthly Installments, and carrier financing can each apply approval rules. Complete the application with the correct account holder information, review the agreement before accepting, and confirm which carrier is being activated. For Apple Upgrade, Apple’s current announcement limits eligible carriers to AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon and excludes prepaid service.
7. Reconcile both accounts after activation
Check the first bill from the new arrangement and the final bill from the old carrier. Confirm that the old device balance, promotion credits, service charges, trade-in credit, and taxes match the written terms. Keep the old agreement and payoff confirmation until all credits and returns are settled.
If you are already in Apple’s legacy iPhone Upgrade Program
Apple’s U.S. legal terms describe the legacy program as a 24-month, 0% APR installment loan covering the iPhone’s retail price and selected AppleCare+ coverage. A credit check was required, and the phone had to be activated with a new or existing eligible-carrier service plan; the carrier could charge an additional fee. These are mechanics of existing accounts, not evidence that new applications remain open.
Continuing the existing loan
Continue the scheduled Citizens One payments through the term shown in your agreement. Apple’s current program page says no action is required merely because the program is ending. Do not stop payments, cancel AppleCare+, or assume that a wireless-service change closes the loan.

Apple’s published terms required all of the following for the stated Upgrade Option:

Check Apple’s transition instructions for your account before sending a phone. If a device returned through Apple’s online upgrade process fails the repair or condition requirements, Apple warns that the original loan may be reinstated.
Trading or selling outside the Upgrade Option
An ordinary sale or trade-in does not erase the remaining Citizens One balance under the published terms. You remain responsible for that balance and cannot then use the stated Upgrade Option for the same loan. Obtain a payoff confirmation from the lender if you want the balance settled.

Changing carriers does not transfer a carrier installment balance
Your new carrier may offer a trade-in or reimbursement promotion, but that is a separate commercial offer. Unless the old carrier confirms that the balance is paid, you still owe it under the original agreement. The same applies if you keep the phone and simply move the number.
Promotional credits can be more important than the headline payoff
A phone that appears to cost little after credits may require many months of service. Canceling the line or changing plans can stop future credits, leaving the unpaid principal due sooner than expected. Ask for the remaining unearned credits in dollars, not only the number of months.
Unlock status is separate from ownership
Owning a phone does not guarantee that it is immediately usable on every network, and being current on payments does not necessarily mean it is unlocked. Apple specifically notes that carrier-financed iPhones may remain locked until paid in full. Confirm the carrier’s unlock policy for your model and account before relying on another network.

Your number can move while obligations remain
Number portability changes the service relationship, not the loan relationship. Keep the old line active until the transfer completes, then verify that the old account shows the correct final status. Do not close the account first if doing so would interrupt the number transfer or invalidate a promotion.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
| Mistake | Why it causes trouble | Safer action |
|---|---|---|
| Assuming a new Apple Upgrade loan is available | The U.S. program is ending, so a carrier switch is not a new-enrollment path | Use Apple’s current purchase and financing choices and verify eligibility at checkout |
| Canceling service before checking the device balance | Future promotion credits may stop and the remaining principal may become due under carrier terms | Get the payoff and credit schedule in writing first |
| Giving away a financed phone | Resale or trade-in does not automatically settle the loan | Confirm payoff or continue payments as required by the agreement |
| Assuming an Apple lease is the same as ownership | A lease has return, upgrade, condition, and early-termination rules | Read the Klarna lease disclosures and calculate the total cost for the period you expect to keep the phone |
| Ignoring prepaid-service restrictions | Apple’s 2026 Apple Upgrade announcement excludes prepaid service | Use an eligible carrier or choose a purchase route that supports your service |
| Returning a legacy-program phone without checking its condition | Apple may reinstate the original loan if the returned phone fails the repair or condition requirements | Inspect the device, follow Apple’s return instructions, and retain tracking and acceptance records |
| Stopping Citizens One payments after ordering another phone | The old loan remains active through its stated term | Continue scheduled payments until the lender confirms the account is satisfied |
| Relying on a generic credit or payoff estimate | Approval and account balances are individual | Ask Apple or the carrier to evaluate your specific account |
Which route fits common situations?
You still owe a large carrier balance and depend on bill credits
Get the carrier’s payoff and unearned-credit figures before moving. In many cases, keeping the existing line until credits finish can cost less than canceling early, but only your agreement and account can establish that result. Compare that total with buying a new iPhone while continuing the old installments.
Your carrier phone is paid off and you want flexibility
A direct purchase from Apple avoids a new carrier device balance; Apple’s buying guidance describes direct-from-Apple financed purchases as unlocked. Confirm the current activation flow and any carrier-specific requirements before ordering.

Keep the Citizens One account current. Review Apple’s transition choices for your next phone and check whether Apple Card Monthly Installments is available to your account; Apple says some transitions require in-store assistance.
You want predictable upgrades and do not need to own the handset
Evaluate Apple Upgrade as a lease only after checking eligibility, the approved monthly amount, lease duration, return standards, and early-termination terms. It currently requires an eligible carrier among AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon and does not support prepaid service.
You want to keep a prepaid line
Apple Upgrade is not the suitable route under Apple’s stated 2026 carrier conditions. Consider paying in full or another financing option whose eligibility expressly supports your service.
Regional and date limits
This guidance is for the United States and reflects Apple materials current in October 2026. The iPhone Upgrade Program’s availability, Apple Upgrade terms, carrier locks, promotional credits, and financing approvals can change. Customers outside the U.S. should check Apple’s local program page and their carrier’s agreement; do not assume the U.S. ending status or the listed carrier conditions apply in another country.
