Yes—Kodi documents playback from WebDAV shares, so you can access media over the network instead of copying each full file to every device. That is a way to avoid duplicated media files, not a guarantee that any 4K video will play smoothly: the source, network path, server, and client all matter.
How WebDAV playback replaces per-device copies
A WebDAV server exposes media files over a network. A compatible client such as Kodi can open a file from that share and play it, rather than requiring a full local copy on each playback device. Kodi lists WebDAV among its supported network protocols and says it can play media from WebDAV shares: Kodi supported features and formats.
This changes where the media file lives; it does not necessarily eliminate every local copy of data. Library software may still store artwork, metadata, or database information locally. For example, the Jellyfin add-on’s Kodi workflow can synchronize metadata into Kodi’s local database even when you are not copying the media files themselves.
Can 4K movies play from a WebDAV mount?
They can, if the complete playback path can sustain the file and the client supports its formats. A 4K label alone does not tell you the required throughput: bitrate varies between files, and playback also depends on network stability, the server’s ability to deliver data, and client compatibility with the video, audio, and HDR formats.

No universal minimum connection speed is established for this setup. A remote stream depends on both the server-side upload path and the client-side connection, plus the storage service’s response. Concurrent streams or other network use can reduce the capacity available to a movie. Check the actual file’s bitrate and test the exact device, network, and source you plan to use instead of treating a single speed figure as a guarantee.
Direct playback also assumes the client can play the file as delivered. If the client cannot handle a codec or other format detail, playback may fail or require conversion by a media server; that conversion adds another workload and can affect delivery. Compatibility is specific to the client and file, not something WebDAV itself solves.

How Kodi’s cache settings affect WebDAV playback
Kodi’s caching documentation identifies WebDAV as an internet filesystem and describes controls for buffering, memory allocation, and read factor. These settings can influence how Kodi reads data ahead of playback and how much memory it uses. The controls are available in Kodi v21 Omega’s documented caching settings: Kodi caching settings.

Cache behavior is also constrained by the playback device’s available memory. If a stream buffers, investigate the network path and source performance as well as Kodi’s cache configuration; changing a setting is not a substitute for sufficient, stable throughput.

Where Jellyfin fits—and where it does not
Jellyfin’s Kodi integration offers distinct workflows, and neither should be casually described as Kodi’s direct WebDAV feature. In the add-on workflow, Jellyfin can synchronize media metadata into Kodi’s local database. In native mode, Kodi accesses media files directly through the filesystem, and Jellyfin documents NFS or Samba as the required network sharing options for that path. See Jellyfin’s Kodi documentation.
If the goal is to open a WebDAV share in Kodi, Kodi’s documented WebDAV support is the relevant path. If the goal is Jellyfin’s native Kodi mode, make the media available to the Kodi device using NFS or Samba. A Jellyfin server can also access cloud-backed media through a server-side filesystem mount; Jellyfin documents rclone as an integration option, and rclone documents configuring a WebDAV remote with a URL and credentials: Jellyfin storage documentation and rclone WebDAV documentation. That describes an integration approach, not a guarantee about a particular provider’s speed or reliability.

What to check before dropping local media copies
- Client support: Confirm that the specific Kodi device can access the WebDAV share and decode the file’s video, audio, and HDR formats.
- End-to-end delivery: Consider the source’s response, server upload capacity, the client’s network, and competing traffic. A fast client connection cannot fix a slow or unstable source path.
- Buffer behavior: Kodi’s internet-filesystem cache controls may help with transient delivery variation, but device memory and sustained throughput remain limits.
- Availability: Remote files are available only when the network path and storage are reachable. A local copy may still be useful for offline playback or when remote service availability is not dependable.
- Jellyfin library safety: Jellyfin recommends keeping its database on local storage. It also warns that scheduled maintenance can remove library items when mounted storage is unavailable, so make sure remote mounts are online when maintenance runs and consider safeguards appropriate to your setup.
- Cloud library scanning: Jellyfin says image extraction requires downloading the whole file and recommends disabling it for cloud storage, where that operation can be costly or impractical.
Why a WebDAV video may buffer
Buffering means the client is not receiving playable data quickly or consistently enough for the current playback demand. The cause may be a high-bitrate file, weak client connectivity, limited server upload capacity, slow storage response, congestion, or a combination of these factors. The relevant issue is the weakest part of the route from stored file to player—not simply whether the home internet plan is described as fast.

Quick Recap
- Check whether the problem follows the file. A higher-bitrate or differently encoded file can expose a limit that a smaller file does not. Confirm the file’s bitrate and format where available.
- Check the route at both ends. Consider the client connection and the server or cloud source’s ability to deliver data, including other traffic and concurrent playback.
- Separate compatibility from throughput. A format the device cannot decode may fail even when the network is fast; buffering alone does not prove that a cache setting is wrong.
- Review Kodi’s caching behavior. Kodi exposes memory and read-ahead controls for internet filesystems including WebDAV. Adjust only with the device’s memory limits in mind, then evaluate whether the delivery path is stable enough for the file.
- For Jellyfin, verify the storage mount and maintenance timing. If a server-side mount is offline, Jellyfin may not see the files; its documentation warns that scheduled maintenance can remove unavailable items from the library.
