Yes. The FCC’s March 23, 2026 action does not make TP-Link routers people already own illegal or stop them from working. The action concerns new foreign-produced consumer router models seeking FCC authorization; the FCC says models authorized before the action may still be sold by retailers. Whether you should keep your particular router depends on its support status and security configuration.
What the FCC action means for a router you already own
The FCC added foreign-produced consumer-grade routers to its Covered List on March 23, 2026. A new covered model generally cannot receive FCC equipment authorization, which is required for import, use, or sale in the United States, unless an applicable conditional approval applies. The FCC says the action does not bar continued use of existing routers, and previously authorized models may continue to be sold by retailers. FCC announcement.
That is a distinction between a device already in service and a new model seeking authorization. The action does not mean every TP-Link router is banned, nor does it establish the authorization status of every model or retail listing. The FCC’s August 2026 public notice describes a process for router-producing entities to seek conditional approval through evaluation by the Department of War or Department of Homeland Security. Because approvals and covered-list status can change, check current FCC notices for a specific new model before buying it. FCC conditional-approval notice.
Can you buy a new TP-Link router?
Possibly, but the brand name alone does not settle the answer. The FCC says previously authorized router models may remain available from retailers. A newly introduced foreign-produced model may require an applicable conditional approval before it can receive FCC authorization. Check the exact model’s authorization and current status rather than assuming that an older model’s eligibility applies to a newer one.

TP-Link said on April 14, 2026, that its existing routers remain authorized and that it intends to continue providing firmware and security updates. It also said it is pursuing conditional approval for new products. These are the manufacturer’s statements, not an FCC model-by-model confirmation; verify the support and hardware-revision details for the router you own or plan to buy. TP-Link customer statement.
Should you keep your current TP-Link router?
Regulatory status and security are separate questions. On April 7, 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice reported that GRU actors had exploited known vulnerabilities to steal credentials for thousands of TP-Link routers worldwide since at least 2024, then accessed compromised devices and changed settings to redirect DNS requests. That report establishes a real risk from vulnerable routers; it does not say that every TP-Link model is affected or that every owner’s router was compromised. DOJ announcement.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Use the model’s support lifecycle and its configuration to make the keep-or-replace decision. DOJ recommends replacing end-of-life or end-of-support routers, installing the latest available firmware, checking that DNS resolvers are authentic, and reviewing firewall rules to avoid unwanted exposure of remote-management services.
Check the model and firmware
- Find the exact model and hardware revision on the router’s label or in its administration interface.
- Look up that specific revision in TP-Link’s official download center and end-of-life product information. Install the latest firmware available for it. DOJ links to these resources in its guidance.
- Check whether the model is listed as end of life or end of support. If it is, replace it rather than relying on future security updates.
Review the router’s settings
- Check the DNS resolver addresses in the router settings and confirm they are the ones you expect.
- Review firewall settings and avoid exposing remote administration to the internet unless you have a specific need and have secured it.
- If you cannot update the router or bring it to a secure configuration, replace it.
How to decide before buying a replacement
Do not choose a replacement solely because it carries the TP-Link name—or reject it solely for that reason. Check the exact model’s U.S. authorization or applicable conditional approval, and confirm its support status and hardware revision. The FCC’s allowance for previously authorized models to remain on sale does not establish that a particular listing is authorized, supported, or suitable for your needs.

| What to check | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| FCC status for the exact model | Whether the model was authorized before the action or has an applicable conditional approval. The FCC’s general announcement does not provide a complete model-by-model list. |
| Hardware revision and support lifecycle | Which firmware applies and whether the specific revision is still supported. TP-Link’s April 14, 2026 statement says existing routers will continue to receive updates, but it does not independently confirm every model’s lifecycle. |
| Security configuration | Whether firmware is current, DNS settings are expected, and remote-management services are not unnecessarily exposed. |
