Sometimes. A Japanese flip phone can keep working after a carrier retires its 3G network, but only when the exact handset, carrier, plan, network bands, and voice technology are compatible. A 3G-only model will lose that carrier’s mobile service. A phone marked 4G is not automatically safe: it also needs working VoLTE (Voice over LTE), an eligible contract, and the right setting enabled.

Identify the carrier and model number first, then check that combination against the carrier’s current compatibility notice. Do not rely on the phone’s shape or a generic 4G label.

What a network shutdown actually changes

Japanese flip phones are a form factor, not a single technical category. Two phones that look nearly identical may use completely different radio technologies. One may be 3G-only; another may support 4G data but lack the carrier’s VoLTE implementation; a newer model may support 4G voice and data and continue normally after 3G is retired.

When a carrier shuts down 3G, it removes the network on which older handsets register. A 3G-only phone cannot make calls, send messages, or use mobile data through that carrier afterward. The handset itself has not suddenly become physically defective; the required radio network is no longer available.

  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

4G introduces a separate issue for calls. On modern networks, ordinary voice service is generally delivered through VoLTE rather than the old 3G fallback. If a 4G phone does not support VoLTE for the intended carrier, or if VoLTE is disabled or excluded by the plan, data may continue while voice calls stop. Some other legacy functions can disappear as well.

Shutdown dates confirmed for major Japanese carriers

Carrier 3G service affected What customers need
NTT Docomo FOMA 3G and i-mode ended March 31, 2026. A customer staying with Docomo needs a 4G/5G-compatible plan, handset, and service. Some 4G models lose voice or other functions if VoLTE is unsupported.
SoftBank 3G ended in most of Japan April 15, 2024; Ishikawa Prefecture followed July 31, 2024. Customers need a compatible 4G or 5G handset and price plan. Handset, contract, or setting incompatibility can disable voice and data.
KDDI Not stated here. Check KDDI’s current official notice for the shutdown date and model requirements before making a decision.

These dates do not mean every Japanese flip phone stopped working. They mean phones dependent on the retired 3G layer can no longer use that layer. A compatible 4G or 5G handset may continue, subject to the carrier’s model and contract rules.

The five checks that decide whether your phone survives

1. Exact model number

Write down the complete model identifier from the label under the battery, the original box, the purchase record, or the phone’s About device screen. A family name is not enough: different regional or carrier variants can have different radios and software. Give the carrier the exact identifier, including letters, numbers, and suffixes.

2. Intended carrier

Compatibility is carrier-specific. A model that works on one Japanese network may not be approved on another, even when both advertise 4G. If you plan to move the handset to a different carrier, check that carrier’s own compatibility list rather than relying on the seller’s description.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

3. 4G or 5G support

The phone must support a mobile-generation layer that remains available on the chosen carrier. A 3G-only handset has no path forward after that carrier’s 3G shutdown. 4G or 5G markings establish only that the radio can use a newer generation; they do not establish voice compatibility.

4. VoLTE support for that carrier

Confirm that the exact model supports the carrier’s VoLTE service. Docomo explicitly warns that some 4G-compatible models without VoLTE will no longer make voice calls and may lose other functions. SoftBank likewise lists non-VoLTE-compatible handsets among devices that can lose voice and data service.

5. Plan and settings

The subscription must permit the newer network and voice service. Docomo tells FOMA customers who want to remain with Docomo to move to a 4G/5G-compatible plan, handset, and service. SoftBank says the handset, contract, and settings all matter. On phones that expose a VoLTE control, look in the mobile-network or call settings and make sure it is enabled; menu names differ by model. A setting change cannot add VoLTE capability to a phone that lacks the required hardware or carrier software.

How to check your phone before the shutdown or after service stops

  1. Record the model. Copy the complete model number exactly as displayed on the handset or its documentation.
  2. Record the carrier and contract. Note whether the line is with Docomo, SoftBank, KDDI, or another provider, and whether it is a legacy 3G plan.
  3. Open the carrier’s current affected-device or compatibility guidance. Search by the exact model, not by a product nickname or the words Japanese flip phone.
  4. Read the voice requirement. Look specifically for VoLTE compatibility and any restriction on imported, unlocked, or variant models. A result that says 4G alone is incomplete.
  5. Check the plan. Confirm that the account has been moved from a retired 3G service to the carrier’s eligible 4G/5G service. If the carrier requires a plan change, complete it before testing the handset.
  6. Inspect the handset setting. If the model has a VoLTE option, enable it according to the carrier’s instructions. Restart the phone so it registers again.
  7. Test all essential functions. Place an outgoing call, receive a call, send a message, and test mobile data in a location with coverage. Do not treat a signal icon or a successful data connection as proof that voice calling works.
  8. Ask the carrier for a model-level confirmation. Provide the model number and contract details. This is the decisive check when a compatibility list is unclear.

What to expect in each common scenario

3G-only flip phone

After the carrier’s 3G shutdown, mobile registration on that network ends. Calls, text messaging that depends on the mobile service, and mobile data stop. Changing a menu setting or inserting a new SIM cannot turn a 3G radio into 4G or 5G. Replacement with a carrier-approved newer handset is required for continued cellular service.

4G phone without usable VoLTE

This is the most misleading case. The phone may still show a 4G signal or connect to data, yet fail when you place or receive a call because the carrier no longer provides a 3G fallback. Docomo’s March 21, 2024 announcement states in Japanese: 「また、4Gに対応した機種においてもVoLTE非対応機種は音声通話がご利用いただけなくなるなど、一部機能がご利用いただけなくなります。」 The English meaning is that, even among 4G-compatible models, those without VoLTE cannot make voice calls and some functions become unavailable.

4G/5G phone with carrier VoLTE

If the exact variant is approved, the plan is eligible, and VoLTE is enabled where required, the phone can generally continue using the carrier’s newer network. Continued service still depends on coverage, account status, and any carrier restrictions on that model. Verify rather than infer from the age or appearance of the handset.

Carrier-specific implications

NTT Docomo after FOMA

Docomo ended FOMA 3G and i-mode on March 31, 2026. A FOMA customer who wants to remain with Docomo must transition to a 4G/5G-compatible plan, handset, and service. Docomo also warns that some 4G models lose voice calling or other functions, so a 4G label is not sufficient. Check the exact device in Docomo’s current guidance and verify VoLTE before changing plans or buying a replacement.

SoftBank after its 2024 shutdown

SoftBank ended 3G service in most of Japan on April 15, 2024, and completed the Ishikawa Prefecture phase on July 31, 2024. Its notice says customers on 3G services must switch to 4G and/or 5G price plans and compatible mobile handsets to continue using SoftBank mobile communication services. The carrier identifies three possible sources of failure: an incompatible handset, an incompatible contract, or an incompatible setting.

KDDI

The shutdown date and model rules for KDDI are not established in the carrier material summarized here. If the line is with KDDI, use KDDI’s current official announcement and compatibility checker rather than applying Docomo or SoftBank dates.

If you need to replace the phone

Start with the carrier, not a shopping listing. A practical search phrase is 4G VoLTE-compatible flip phone, but that phrase is only a starting point. Before paying, complete these checks:

  • Match the exact model number to the intended carrier’s compatibility guidance.
  • Confirm that voice service uses VoLTE on that carrier.
  • Confirm that the required 4G/5G bands and the carrier’s SIM or eSIM arrangement are supported.
  • Confirm that the plan can be used with the handset and that any required VoLTE setting is available.
  • Check the functions you actually depend on, including calls, messaging, contacts, camera, mobile data, and any legacy service that matters to you.

Do not assume that an imported model, an unlocked model, or a phone advertised as 4G will work. Compatibility must be established for the exact hardware and carrier combination. The official notices summarized here do not confirm any particular retail model, listing, stock status, or price.

Troubleshooting when calls stop

The phone shows signal but calls fail

Check VoLTE support and the VoLTE setting first. A 4G data connection can remain available while voice fails when the handset cannot use the carrier’s VoLTE service. Then verify that the account is on an eligible 4G/5G plan.

No service appears at all

Recheck whether the model is 3G-only, whether the carrier has completed its shutdown in your area, and whether the SIM or account was migrated. Restarting can help the handset register after a plan change, but it cannot fix a 3G-only device.

Only some functions disappeared

Some 4G models lose particular voice or legacy functions after 3G services end. Compare the carrier’s notice for your exact model with the functions you need. If the carrier lists the model as unsupported, replacement is the dependable remedy.

Bottom line

You can still use a Japanese flip phone after its network shuts down only when that specific phone is compatible with the carrier’s surviving 4G/5G service and VoLTE, and the plan and settings are correct. Identify the model and carrier, verify them in the current official compatibility guidance, and test voice as well as data. If the handset is 3G-only or lacks usable VoLTE, the shutdown ends its cellular service regardless of its flip-phone design.
