Yes—Zune Software 4.8 can still be installed on Windows 11, but it is legacy software and Microsoft no longer officially supports it. The practical route is to use the offline installer, enable the Windows components Zune expects, install it before connecting the player, and use Windows 7 compatibility mode if the setup program refuses to start.
Installation does not restore Zune Marketplace, account sign-in, or Zune’s former online services. The realistic goal is local library management and, where the drivers cooperate, syncing music, videos, and podcasts with an existing Zune device.
What still works—and what does not
Microsoft’s Update Catalog still lists Zune Software 4.8. The package is 186.3 MB, does not require network connectivity during installation, and was last modified on April 4, 2012. The catalog also lists older 4.7 packages and Zune drivers.

Microsoft’s current position is effectively that Zune is discontinued, although a Microsoft Q&A answer dated October 9, 2025 still documents an installation procedure for Windows 11.

Before downloading anything, make sure you obtain the installer from a source you trust. Microsoft’s Q&A guidance points to an offline installer hosted by ZuneUpdate.com. The Microsoft Update Catalog is also a useful reference for confirming that the 4.8 package exists, but its catalog page is not a modern Windows 11 support page.

Prepare Windows 11 before installing Zune
Zune depends on old Microsoft components. Installing them first avoids several common setup failures.

- Check your Windows edition. If you use Windows 11 N, install the matching Media Feature Pack before attempting Zune. N editions omit multimedia components that Zune expects.
- Enable .NET Framework. Microsoft’s current Q&A procedure identifies .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.0 as required or commonly required components.
- Enable Windows Media Player or Media Features. On current Windows 11 builds, open Settings > Apps > Optional features, then look for Windows Media Player or Media Features. The exact entry can vary by edition and build.
- Restart Windows. A restart is especially important after adding optional features. It also resolved one reported Zune installer failure with error
0x800705b3.
Open the Windows Features dialog directly
For the classic optional-components dialog:
- Press Win + R.
- Enter
optionalfeatures. - Select OK.
- Enable the relevant .NET Framework and media options shown on your system.
- Allow Windows to download or apply the files, then restart when prompted.
On some current Insider builds, .NET 3.5 installation has reportedly behaved differently, including a stalled installation on build 29610. That is a build-specific community report rather than a general Windows 11 rule, so do not assume every Windows 11 installation has the same problem.
Install Zune Software 4.8
Use the complete offline installer rather than extracting individual packages as your first approach. A separate run of zune-x64.msi has produced a DriverCA error in at least one Windows 11 case, so manually launching the extracted MSI is not a dependable replacement for the main setup program.
- Download the Zune Software 4.8 offline installer.
- Do not connect the Zune player yet.
- Right-click
ZuneSetup.exeand select Properties. - Open the Compatibility tab.
- Check Run this program in compatibility mode for: and choose Windows 7.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Right-click
ZuneSetup.exeagain and choose Run as administrator. - Approve the User Account Control prompt by selecting Yes.
- Complete setup and restart Windows if requested.
Compatibility mode is not a claim that Zune is officially supported by Windows 7 or Windows 11. It is simply the workaround currently reported to help the old installer get past its operating-system checks and launch failures.

Connect the Zune after installation
Once Windows has restarted, connect the player with a known-good USB cable and open Zune Software. Give Windows time to detect and configure the legacy driver. If the player appears in Device Manager but not in Zune, the application installation may be successful while driver association has failed.
Try these basic checks first:
- Use a different USB port, preferably a direct port rather than a hub.
- Disconnect and reconnect the player after Zune Software is open.
- Restart both Windows and the Zune device.
- Open Device Manager and look for an unknown device, a Zune entry, or a device with a warning icon.
- Run the complete installer again as administrator if the driver was skipped or setup ended prematurely.
The Microsoft Q&A answer links to the community Zune-driver-fix project for unrecognized devices. It also links to ZuneModdingHelper for some syncing-related problems. These are community projects, not Microsoft-supported components, so review their instructions and downloads before using them.
Advanced driver repair: use caution
One community-reported repair involves copying a language-resource file and manually installing the Zune INF package. It must be run from a command prompt with TrustedInstaller-level permissions, not an ordinary administrator prompt:

The folder beginning zune.inf_amd64_ is generated on a particular system and may have a different suffix—or may not exist in that location. Verify the actual folder before changing the command. These commands are community-reported and are not Microsoft-supported Zune instructions. If you are not comfortable working with DriverStore files, try the linked driver-fix project or use a Windows virtual machine instead of modifying protected system folders.

Is it worth installing Zune on Windows 11?
It is worthwhile if you already own a Zune and need its desktop software for local transfers. It is not worthwhile if you expect a functioning Zune Marketplace, cloud library, account service, or modern synchronization experience. Those online functions are no longer a practical part of the setup.

For the most reliable long-term arrangement, keep a backup of your music outside the Zune library and save a copy of the installer. Because the software dates from 2012, a future Windows update could break installation or driver operation without a Microsoft fix.
