Yes. You can still install Windows 10 from Microsoft installation media and activate it with either a matching digital license or a valid 25-character product key. The important distinction is support: Windows 10 Home and Pro reached end of ordinary support on October 14, 2025. Those editions continue to run, but Microsoft no longer provides normal security fixes, feature updates, or technical support. Eligible devices can receive consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) through October 12, 2027.

What “still install and activate” means in 2026

Installation and activation are separate steps. Installation puts the operating system on the computer; activation verifies that the installed edition has a valid license. Microsoft’s current Windows 10 instructions still cover installing on a computer with no operating system, creating bootable media, using a product key, and detecting an original-equipment-manufacturer (OEM) license stored in firmware.

Activation remains available when the licensing conditions are met. A computer that was previously activated with Windows 10 can normally reinstall the same edition without a key when its digital license is still associated with the device. A computer that has never had an activated Windows 10 installation needs a valid product key or a purchased digital license. Installing from a USB drive or DVD does not provide a license by itself.

For ordinary Home and Pro editions, the final normal release was Windows 10 version 22H2. Version 22H2 does not restore support; it is simply the last standard Home/Pro release. Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) products have separate lifecycle dates and should not be treated as ordinary Home or Pro installations.

What changed after October 14, 2025

On October 14, 2025, Windows 10 Home and Pro reached end of support. The installed system does not suddenly stop booting, and existing applications and files remain available. The change is that Microsoft stopped ordinary technical assistance, feature updates, and security fixes for those editions.

Question Answer for ordinary Windows 10 Home/Pro
Will an existing installation stop working? No. Microsoft states that the software continues to function after support is discontinued.
Can you install it from media? Yes. Microsoft still documents USB, DVD, and ISO-based installation workflows.
Can you activate it? Yes, if the device has a matching digital license, a valid product key, or a purchased digital license.
Will normal security updates continue? No. Ordinary Home/Pro installations no longer receive Microsoft security fixes or feature updates.
Is there a post-support option? Eligible consumer devices can use Microsoft’s ESU program through October 12, 2027, subject to Microsoft’s enrollment requirements.

Microsoft 365 Apps may continue to run on Windows 10, but that does not change the operating system’s end-of-support status. Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11 where the hardware supports it.

Check your license before reinstalling

Do this before erasing the disk. It establishes which edition you can reinstall and whether you need a key.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Update & Security > Activation.
  3. Record the edition shown, such as Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro.
  4. Record whether Windows reports that it is activated and whether activation is described as a digital license.
  5. If the page offers an option to link the license to a Microsoft account, sign in and complete that association before changing hardware or reinstalling.

When you rely on a digital license, install the same edition that was previously activated. A Home license does not activate a Pro installation, and a Pro license does not turn a Home installation into Pro without the appropriate entitlement.

Choose the correct path for your license and hardware

Hardware and license situation What to do during setup Expected activation result
Previously activated computer, same motherboard, same edition Select I don’t have a product key when asked, then install the previously licensed edition. After connecting to the internet, Windows should reactivate from the device’s digital license.
Previously activated computer with a Microsoft-account-linked digital license Install the same edition and sign in to the linked account after setup. Windows can use the account and device association to restore activation.
New computer that has never had activated Windows 10 Enter a valid 25-character key for the edition being installed, or continue without one and activate later after obtaining a license. Activation requires a valid key or purchased digital license; installation alone is not enough.
Computer with an OEM license embedded in firmware Install the matching edition. Setup may detect the firmware license automatically; if prompted, enter the matching key. The embedded entitlement can activate the matching edition when the device and edition correspond.
Motherboard replaced Install the same edition, connect to the internet, then use the Activation troubleshooter. Enter the product key again if requested. Reactivation depends on whether the license permits the hardware change and whether the digital license was linked to your Microsoft account.
No license and no product key You can install Windows, but do not claim activation during setup. The installation remains unactivated until you provide a valid license.

Create Windows 10 installation media

Microsoft documents creating bootable installation media on a USB flash drive or DVD. An ISO file can also be used in a workflow that supports it. The media is only the installer; it is not a Windows license.

USB flash drive

  1. Use a separate working computer to obtain Microsoft’s Windows 10 installation media.
  2. Connect a blank USB flash drive with enough capacity for the installer and any required working files.
  3. Use Microsoft’s media-creation workflow to write the bootable installer to the USB drive. The process erases the drive, so copy personal files elsewhere first.
  4. Safely eject the drive when creation finishes.

A retail USB drive is a convenient physical item for this step, but buying the drive does not buy Windows activation. Keep the product key or proof of digital licensing separately.

DVD or ISO

If the computer has an optical drive, Microsoft’s instructions also support DVD media. An ISO can be mounted or written to suitable bootable media, depending on the computer and the installation method. Verify that the computer can boot from the selected medium before wiping its existing installation.

Install Windows 10 step by step

  1. Back up the computer. Copy documents, photographs, browser data, application installers, license records, and any encryption-recovery information to storage that will not be erased. A clean installation removes the selected partitions and their contents.
  2. Confirm the target edition. Use the edition shown under Settings > Update & Security > Activation on the existing system when you are depending on a digital license.
  3. Boot from the installation media. Insert the USB drive or DVD, restart the computer, and choose that device from the firmware boot menu. The key used to open the boot menu varies by manufacturer.
  4. Start Windows Setup. Select the language, time and currency format, and keyboard layout, then continue to installation.
  5. Choose the installation type. For a replacement installation, select the option that performs a clean installation. If you need to preserve an existing installation, stop and confirm that your chosen path supports an in-place upgrade instead; do not delete partitions accidentally.
  6. Select the edition. Choose the edition that matches the license: Home with Home, or Pro with Pro.
  7. Handle the product-key screen correctly. Select I don’t have a product key only when the device already has a matching digital license or when you intentionally plan to activate later. Otherwise enter the valid 25-character key for the edition being installed.
  8. Select the destination disk and partitions. Check the disk size and partition layout carefully. Deleting or formatting a partition destroys the data stored there.
  9. Let Setup complete. The computer will restart several times. Remove the USB drive only when the firmware would otherwise start the installer again.
  10. Finish first-run setup. Create or sign in to the requested account, connect to the internet, and allow Windows to detect hardware and obtain available drivers.

Activate after installation

Digital-license activation

Connect the computer to the internet after setup. Open Settings > Update & Security > Activation and check the status. If you installed the same edition on the same licensed device, Windows should activate online without a key. Sign in to the Microsoft account linked to the license when applicable; the account association can help Windows identify the device.

Product-key activation

If the computer has never had an activated Windows 10 license, open the Activation page and choose the option to change or enter a product key. Enter all 25 characters exactly as supplied. The key must correspond to the installed edition. A key for another edition, a mistyped character, or a key that has reached its licensing limit will not activate the installation.

Activation fails while offline

Online activation cannot complete without network access. Connect through Ethernet or Wi-Fi, verify that the system date and time are correct, and check the Activation page again. If the device is managed by an organization, its licensing rules may differ from a personal installation.

What to do after a motherboard replacement

A motherboard change can make Windows treat the computer as a different device. Before the replacement, link the digital license to your Microsoft account from the Activation settings page. After the replacement:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install the same Windows 10 edition that was licensed before the change.
  2. Connect to the internet and sign in to the Microsoft account associated with the license.
  3. Open Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
  4. Run the Activation troubleshooter.
  5. Choose the option indicating that hardware was recently changed, then select the matching device if Windows presents a list.
  6. If the license is product-key based, enter the original key again when prompted.

Linking the license improves the chance of reactivation, but it does not guarantee that every license transfers to replacement hardware. The result depends on the license terms and whether the replacement is accepted as the same licensed device.

Security and support choices after installation

Continue with unsupported Home or Pro

This costs no additional Windows license fee, but the operating system no longer receives ordinary Microsoft security fixes, feature updates, or technical support. Use this path only when you understand the risk and can isolate or replace the system if a serious vulnerability affects software you depend on.

Enroll an eligible device in consumer ESU

Microsoft describes a consumer Extended Security Updates program for eligible Windows 10 devices. The stated protection period runs through October 12, 2027. ESU is a security-maintenance option, not a return to full Windows 10 support: it does not restore feature updates or ordinary technical support. Eligibility, enrollment steps, and any applicable terms must be confirmed in Microsoft’s current guidance for the device and region.

Move to Windows 11 hardware

Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11, including replacing hardware when the current computer cannot meet Windows 11 requirements. A new computer may include a Windows license, but that is a separate purchase and licensing decision from creating Windows 10 installation media.

Use an LTSC product only when it is genuinely appropriate

LTSC releases follow separate lifecycles from Windows 10 Home and Pro. They are intended for specific managed scenarios, not as a general way to extend a consumer Home or Pro license. Confirm the exact LTSC edition, license source, and lifecycle before choosing it.

Troubleshoot common installation and activation problems

“I don’t have a product key” is unavailable or the wrong edition appears

  • Restart setup and verify that the selected edition matches the original license.
  • If the computer has an OEM entitlement in firmware, install the corresponding edition so Setup can detect it.
  • Do not use a Home key with Pro or a Pro key with Home.

Setup installs, but Activation says Windows is not activated

  • Connect to the internet and wait for activation to be checked.
  • Open Settings > Update & Security > Activation and confirm the edition.
  • Sign in to the Microsoft account linked to the digital license.
  • Run the Activation troubleshooter.
  • If the device never had activated Windows 10, obtain and enter a valid product key or digital license.

The product key is rejected

  • Re-enter the 25 characters and check commonly confused characters.
  • Confirm that the key belongs to the installed edition.
  • Check whether the key was already used under licensing terms that prevent this activation.
  • If the key came with an OEM computer, verify that you are installing on that licensed computer or follow the seller’s licensing documentation.

Activation stopped after changing the motherboard

  • Make sure the replacement installation uses the same edition.
  • Sign in with the Microsoft account linked before the hardware change.
  • Run the Activation troubleshooter and select the recent-hardware-change path.
  • Enter the original product key if the license is key based.

The computer cannot boot the USB installer

  • Recreate the media because an incomplete write can leave it unbootable.
  • Use the firmware boot menu rather than changing permanent boot settings unnecessarily.
  • Try another USB port or the DVD workflow if the computer supports it.
  • Check firmware boot-mode and storage-controller settings against the computer manufacturer’s installation guidance.

Is installing Windows 10 still a sensible choice?

Situation Most defensible choice Reason
You need to restore a previously activated Windows 10 computer and the hardware still works. Reinstall the same edition, then reactivate with the digital license. Installation and activation remain supported even though ordinary support has ended.
You have a new computer with no Windows 10 activation history. Use a valid Windows 10 key or digital license only if a specific compatibility need justifies it. A new device cannot activate without licensing, and Windows 10 Home/Pro is unsupported.
Your current computer supports Windows 11. Prefer moving to Windows 11. Microsoft recommends the supported operating system rather than extending an unsupported standard edition.
Your current computer cannot support Windows 11 but must remain on Windows 10. Install Windows 10 only with a valid license, then evaluate ESU eligibility and isolation measures. ESU may provide security coverage through October 12, 2027, while ordinary support remains ended.
You are evaluating an LTSC deployment. Check the exact LTSC product lifecycle and licensing requirements. LTSC follows a separate lifecycle and is not interchangeable with consumer Home/Pro licensing.

Final checklist

  • Back up all data before changing partitions.
  • Record the installed edition and activation status at Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
  • Link a digital license to your Microsoft account before a motherboard replacement.
  • Create Microsoft installation media on USB or DVD; remember that the media itself is not a license.
  • Install the same edition tied to your digital license.
  • Choose I don’t have a product key only for a device with a matching digital license or a plan to activate later.
  • Connect to the internet and check Activation after setup.
  • Use the Activation troubleshooter after major hardware changes.
  • Plan for the unsupported status of ordinary Windows 10 Home/Pro and check whether ESU or a move to Windows 11 is the safer option.
