Yes. Google still lists a production firmware build for the Google TV Streamer (4K), and its published policy provides a minimum of five years of critical security updates. For the device’s US Google Store release on 24 September 2024, that minimum period runs through 24 September 2029.
Those facts answer different questions. A firmware listing shows a particular software release; the five-year statement is a security commitment for critical issues that Google can resolve with a remote update. It is not a promise of feature updates, a new major Android TV version, or help for every hardware or account problem.
What Google is still updating
Google’s Chromecast and Google TV Streamer firmware versions and release notes page was updated on 23 June 2026. It lists production build UTTK.260317.003 for Google TV Streamer (4K). The listed build includes Google Home speaker audio output support, Thread credential sharing, security patches through April 2026, and bug fixes and performance improvements.
Google says firmware releases roll out in stages. The release-notes page is updated when a production version is available for all devices, so a build shown there does not prove that every owner will see it at the same moment. It also does not establish that no newer staged update has appeared since the page’s update date. If your Streamer has not received the build yet, that can be normal during a staged rollout.

- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
Google’s own help wording is straightforward: “Your device usually downloads updates automatically.” Automatic downloading is the normal path, but you can check the television interface yourself when you want to know whether an update is waiting.
How long Google promises security updates
Google’s security-update table identifies the Google TV Streamer (4K) and Voice Remote as products currently receiving critical security updates. It lists a US Google Store release date of 24 September 2024 and an end date of 24 September 2029 for the five-year minimum period.
| What the published information covers | What it means for an owner |
|---|---|
| Current product status | The Google TV Streamer (4K) is listed as currently receiving critical security updates. |
| Minimum period | Google states a minimum period through 24 September 2029. |
| Date used for the calculation | 24 September 2024, the US Google Store release date shown in Google’s table. |
| Type of issue | Critical security issues known to Google that can be resolved with a remote software update. |
| Not included as a guarantee | New features, major operating-system upgrades, fixes for every application, account, network or hardware problem, or a particular support response time. |
The word minimum matters. Google may publish additional firmware after that date, but the table establishes only the stated floor for critical security updates. It should not be read as a commitment that every Google TV feature will continue to evolve until 2029 or that the Streamer will receive each future Android TV release.
Check for a Google TV Streamer software update
You check update status on the Streamer’s TV menus, not in the Google Home app. Google says the Home app does not display the update itself for Chromecast with Google TV or Google TV Streamer.
- Turn on the television connected to the Streamer and make sure the Streamer is selected as the input.
- Open All settings.
- Choose System.
- Open About.
- Select System update.
- Read the on-screen status. If an update is offered, follow the prompts to download and install it.
Google’s troubleshooting guidance may show the shorter path Settings > System > About > System update. The labels lead to the same system-update screen; the exact first menu name can vary with the software version or how the settings panel is opened.

A Streamer can also need an update during initial setup. If setup pauses to install software, leave the device connected to power and the network and follow the television instructions rather than trying to complete setup through the phone app.
What happens while an update installs
Google gives a typical update time of 10–12 minutes. That is a process estimate, not an independently measured guarantee. During installation, the streaming device cannot be used to cast, and its LED pulses while it receives the update.
- Keep the Streamer connected to power and to the network.
- Do not treat a temporary blank screen or unavailable casting as proof that the update failed.
- Avoid unplugging the device or cutting power while installation is actively progressing.
- Allow extra time if the download is large, the network is slow, or the device is completing setup at the same time.
Once the device restarts and the normal Google TV interface returns, open All settings > System > About > System update again if you want to confirm its status.
If the update takes much longer than expected
A long pause can be caused by connectivity or power rather than by the firmware package itself. Work through these recovery steps in order and do not interrupt an update casually.
1. Check network and power
Confirm that the Streamer’s network connection is working and that its power cable and adapter are firmly connected. If other devices have also lost internet access, restore the network first.

2. Restart the Streamer’s power cycle
Google advises unplugging the device for one minute, then reconnecting it. This is a controlled restart after an update appears stuck; it is different from repeatedly pulling the plug while the LED shows that an update is actively being written.

After the device restarts, return to System > About > System update. If the download resumes or the device reports that it is current, let the process finish before opening apps or attempting to cast.
4. Factory-reset only when the problem persists
If the issue continues after checking the connection and restarting, Google’s guidance is to factory-reset the Streamer and set it up again. A reset erases the device’s settings and installed-app state, so use it as a last resort and make sure you know the Google account details and network password needed for setup.
Support you can still use
Google’s Google TV Streamer support center is the starting point for setup instructions, troubleshooting, warranty information and a Contact us path. Use that center when the problem is specific to the Streamer, its remote, setup or an account-linked device issue.
Google’s broader Google TV help guidance distinguishes hardware assistance from software updating: the device manufacturer can help with hardware issues and software updates. For a Streamer bought through a particular retailer or in a specific country, available warranty or repair options can differ. Google does not publish a universal response-time promise for every contact route, and support availability is not identical in every region.

When the problem is performance rather than an update
A device can be fully updated and still experience slow menus, app crashes or playback problems. Google’s troubleshooting guidance recommends a sequence that separates those symptoms from a failed firmware installation.
- Restart the Google TV Streamer.
- Open the Play Store and install available updates for the affected apps.
- Check the system again at Settings > System > About > System update.
- If the problem remains, use the Google TV Help Community, submit feedback from the device, or contact the device manufacturer through the available support route.
These steps matter because an app can require an update even when the Streamer’s operating system is current. Conversely, installing an app update will not extend Google’s security-update period or change the date in the security table.
Should you keep or replace your Streamer?
The published information does not make replacement necessary simply because you want to install an available update. A Streamer that is receiving updates, connects reliably and runs the features you need can remain a reasonable device through the stated security period.
Keeping it makes sense when
- The device is listed as current, or it can complete the update after the network and power checks above.
- You mainly need existing streaming, casting and smart-home functions rather than a specific unreleased feature.
- The remaining security coverage through 24 September 2029 meets your household’s risk and replacement schedule.
- Any performance issue is limited to an app that can be updated or restarted independently.
Consider replacement when
- You require a feature or major operating-system version that Google has not promised for this model.
- The device has recurring hardware, power or remote-control faults that remain after official troubleshooting.
- Your security requirements extend beyond the published minimum period and you prefer a device with a newer support window.
- The cost or inconvenience of repeated resets and support contacts is greater than the value of continuing to use the hardware.
Those are personal timing and capability decisions, not evidence that Google has ended support. The current firmware listing and the security table show ongoing support today, while leaving future feature releases and post-2029 coverage unspecified.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat the support commitment does not tell you
It is useful to keep three separate ideas apart:
- Firmware availability: Google has published a production build and release notes.
- Security coverage: Google states a minimum period for critical security updates through 24 September 2029, based on the US release date shown in its table.
- General product support: Google provides help, warranty and contact channels, but the published material does not promise that every issue will be repairable, that every country has the same service, or that support will continue in a particular form through the security date.
Reading the statements this way avoids two common mistakes: assuming a listed security period guarantees feature upgrades, or assuming that a staged firmware rollout means the product has been abandoned.
Bottom line for owners
Yes, you can still get Google TV Streamer software updates and support. Google’s latest dated release information lists production build UTTK.260317.003, and Google’s security table promises a minimum of critical security updates through 24 September 2029 for the device’s US Google Store release. Let automatic updating run, check manually at All settings > System > About > System update when needed, and use the official Streamer support center for device-specific troubleshooting, warranty or contact help. Treat the security date as a minimum security commitment—not as a guarantee of new features, major OS upgrades or every type of technical support.
