Yes. If your Steam account already owns the original Total War: SHOGUN 2, you can still install and play it from your Library. SEGA removed the original game’s standalone purchase option for new customers on 28 September 2026, but the delisting did not revoke existing licenses. Steam owners also receive legacy DLC they do not already own at no additional charge. The newer Complete Edition is a separate enhanced release, although a Steam purchase of it includes the original game as well.
What the September 2026 delisting actually changed
SEGA ended standalone purchases of the original Total War: SHOGUN 2 on Steam on 28 September 2026 at 17:00 BST (16:00 UTC). That date marks a sales change, not the cancellation of previously purchased games. A license attached to a Steam account remains in that account’s Library, so an owner can download, uninstall, reinstall and play the original title in the same way as before.

SEGA’s support FAQ, updated 12 October 2026, states: “For existing owners, nothing will change. The game will remain playable, and all current Steam owners of Total War: SHOGUN 2 will be granted any DLC they do not already own, for free.” The statement applies to people who already own the game on Steam; it does not create a new standalone purchase route for people who never bought it.

How to install the original game from your Steam account
Use the Library entry for the original application rather than relying only on the current Complete Edition store page.
- Open the Steam client and select Library.
- Use the Library search box to look for Total War: SHOGUN 2. Look for the original game entry, not just a store result labelled Complete Edition.
- Open the game’s Library page. If it is installed, choose Play; if it is not installed, choose Install and select your Steam library location.
- Allow Steam to finish the download and any queued updates, then launch the game from the same Library page.
Uninstalling the game does not remove the license. You can repeat the process on a computer that is authorised for the purchasing account, subject to Steam’s normal client and account requirements.
If the game is not visible
First confirm that Steam is signed in to the account that made the purchase. A different account, Family Sharing state or a library filter can make an owned title appear to be missing even though the license is intact. Search for the full title in the Library, check hidden or filtered games, and restart the Steam client so it refreshes the account’s library data.
If the original entry and its Install button are still absent, contact Steam Support while signed in to the purchasing account. Include the account details and purchase information Steam requests. SEGA’s FAQ confirms that existing owners retain access but does not publish account-specific recovery steps; Steam Support is therefore the appropriate place to resolve an entitlement that is not appearing in your Library.
What existing owners receive for free
Missing legacy DLC
SEGA says current Steam owners of the original game are granted legacy DLC they do not already own at no additional cost. The grant is tied to the existing Steam ownership record, so it is not a coupon that must be redeemed manually. After the entitlement update, Steam should show the relevant downloadable content as owned or make it available to install through the game’s Library properties.

- Brand New in box. The product ships with all relevant accessories
DLC availability can take time to appear if the Steam client has stale account data. Restarting the client and opening the game’s DLC or Properties view can force a fresh display, but do not buy duplicate DLC while an entitlement is being checked. If content remains missing, provide Steam Support with the original purchase record and the specific DLC name.
The Blood Pack qualification
When you buy Complete Edition on Steam, the package includes the new Complete Edition, the original game and associated DLC, but the Blood Pack is excluded because of age-rating rules. That exclusion is a qualification on the Complete Edition bundle. Do not assume that a Complete Edition purchase automatically grants the Blood Pack merely because other legacy DLC is present.
SEGA’s announcement about existing owners granting missing legacy DLC and its separate description of the Complete Edition bundle should be read together: your Steam account keeps the original entitlement, while the bundle’s listed contents determine what is included with a new Complete Edition purchase. Check the DLC list shown by Steam for your region and account before paying for anything.
What “Complete Edition” adds
Complete Edition is not simply a renamed store page for the 2011 release. SEGA describes it as an updated and enhanced version with several technical and content changes:
- Updated visuals.
- Modernised controls.
- Japanese and Chinese voice acting and full-text localisation.
- More than 50 newly playable minor factions.
- Integrated Mod.io support.
- A 64-bit upgrade.
A Steam purchase of Complete Edition includes both the enhanced game and the original SHOGUN 2 with associated DLC, subject to the Blood Pack age-rating exception. That makes Steam different from some other PC storefronts, where the purchase entitlement is for Complete Edition only.

Mod compatibility: why the two editions are separate
SEGA says original SHOGUN 2 mods remain unchanged, but they are not compatible with Complete Edition because the newer release uses integrated Mod.io support. A mod that worked with the original executable should therefore be treated as an original-edition mod, not as a plug-in you can move into Complete Edition.
Choose the original edition when
- Your campaign or multiplayer group depends on an existing original-edition mod list.
- You need to preserve a known setup built around the 2011 release.
- You want to avoid changing a working installation while evaluating the enhanced release.
Choose Complete Edition when
- You want the updated visuals, modernised controls, 64-bit upgrade or additional minor factions.
- You want to use the integrated Mod.io system rather than the original mod ecosystem.
- You are starting a new installation and do not need compatibility with an original-edition mod.
Installations and mod subscriptions should be managed as separate environments. Do not overwrite an original setup expecting its mods to carry across automatically; the compatibility boundary is part of SEGA’s edition definition.
Does buying Complete Edition on Steam include the old game?
Yes. On Steam, Complete Edition includes the new Complete Edition and the original SHOGUN 2 with associated DLC, with the Blood Pack excluded from the bundle for age-rating reasons. This means a new Steam buyer receives access to both editions through the Steam entitlement rather than having to purchase the delisted original separately.
That Steam bundle arrangement does not automatically apply to every PC storefront. Purchases through Epic, Microsoft Store and GOG include Complete Edition only, according to SEGA’s edition information. If access to the original 2011 release is important, verify the storefront’s contents before buying; a Complete Edition listing outside Steam should not be assumed to include the legacy application.

What happened to the 75% loyalty discount?
SEGA announced a 75% loyalty discount for existing owners who upgraded to Complete Edition. The published promotion began with the Complete Edition launch on 13 October 2026 and had a stated end date of 12 November 2026 at the listed regional times.
The discount is a time-limited promotion, not a permanent ownership right. Treat it as unavailable unless Steam currently displays the reduced price for your account and region. Do not rely on an old announcement, a cached price or a third-party listing to establish eligibility. If the offer is shown, Steam’s checkout page is the authoritative price before payment; if it is not shown, the original game remains playable without upgrading.

“I bought SHOGUN 2 years ago. Did I lose it?”
No. The September 2026 change removed the new standalone purchase option, not the license on an existing Steam account. Find the original title in Library and use Install or Play.
“I can see Complete Edition but not the original.”
Search the Library for the original title rather than opening only the current store page. Confirm the signed-in account, clear Library filters and restart Steam. If the original app still does not appear, ask Steam Support to review the purchasing account’s entitlement.

“My old mod does not work in Complete Edition.”
That is expected when the mod was made for the original release. Original mods remain associated with the original ecosystem and are not compatible with Complete Edition’s integrated Mod.io system. Launch the original edition for that mod or find a Complete Edition-compatible replacement through its supported mod system.

- New land and sea unit interactions, during a land battle, armies can call in offshore artillery support barrages.
- Campaign map bombardments: offshore naval units can bombard armies and cities in adjacent coastal areas on the campaign map itself.
“I own the original but cannot see all the DLC.”
SEGA says missing legacy DLC is granted free to current Steam owners. Refresh the Steam client and inspect the game’s DLC list. If a specific item is still absent, contact Steam Support rather than purchasing it again. Remember that the Blood Pack is specifically excluded from the Complete Edition Steam bundle because of age ratings.
“Can I buy the original from another storefront?”
The original standalone Steam purchase ended on 28 September 2026. Complete Edition purchases on Epic, Microsoft Store and GOG include Complete Edition only, not the original game. Storefront entitlements are not interchangeable, so an existing Steam license cannot be replaced by assuming a different store’s Complete Edition purchase carries the same contents.
Recommended decision
If you already own the original on Steam, install it from Library and keep using it; the delisting does not require an upgrade. Consider Complete Edition only if its enhanced visuals, modernised controls, 64-bit upgrade, additional minor factions, language features or Mod.io support solve a need you have. On Steam, buying Complete Edition also supplies the original game, but the Blood Pack exclusion and the separation between original and Complete Edition mods still apply.
If the original title is missing from your Library, verify the purchasing account and contact Steam Support. The publisher’s position is clear that existing owners retain playability; an absent Install button is therefore an account or client-entitlement problem to resolve, not evidence that the game was removed from your purchase history.
