Usually, yes—if your account purchased the digital game before it was delisted. Xbox says previously purchased Xbox 360 games and other content remain playable and re-downloadable after the Xbox 360 Store stopped accepting new purchases on July 29, 2024. That does not let someone claim a game they never bought, and it does not guarantee that every delisted title works on every newer Xbox or still has functioning online services.

What “delisted” means on Xbox

A delisted game has been removed from sale on a digital storefront. The removal can apply to one platform, one region, one edition or several storefronts at once. It is different from removing a purchase entitlement that is already attached to your Xbox account.

There is also an important distinction between an individual game delisting and the retirement of an entire storefront. Xbox announced that new purchases of Xbox 360 games, downloadable content and other entertainment through the Xbox 360 Store on the console and Xbox 360 Marketplace would stop being supported on July 29, 2024. Xbox simultaneously said players would still be able to play and re-download previously purchased content and connect with friends.

That policy is clearest for Xbox 360 content affected by the store closure. It should not be treated as a blanket promise covering every game delisted from every Xbox generation, every region or every online service.

Can you re-download a game you bought?

For Xbox 360 content covered by Xbox’s closure guidance, an existing purchase remains associated with the account that bought it. You can normally sign in with that account, find the game in your owned library or download history, and install it again. The exact menu wording can change between console software versions and account interfaces.

Re-downloading is an ownership function, not a replacement purchase method. If you never bought the game, finding an old store listing, a download record on another account or a page cached by a search engine does not create an entitlement.

What you need

  • The original Xbox account that purchased the game.
  • Access to the relevant Xbox console or a console that supports that exact title.
  • A working connection to Xbox account and licensing services for the download.
  • Enough storage space for the game and any required updates or downloadable content.

Basic re-download procedure

  1. Sign out of other profiles and sign in to the account that originally purchased the game.
  2. Open your owned games, library or Xbox 360 download-history area. Menu labels vary by console and software version.
  3. Search for the title in the list of owned content rather than in the store’s new-purchase results.
  4. Select the game and choose the install or download option.
  5. After installation, launch the game while signed in to the owning account. If the console requests a license check, keep the console online until the check completes.

If the game is not listed, do not immediately conclude that the purchase disappeared. Check account identity, region, edition and whether you are looking at the correct generation’s library before contacting Xbox support.

What if you never bought the game?

A delisted game cannot normally be claimed simply because it was once sold digitally. The Xbox 360 Marketplace no longer supports new purchases, so a person who did not buy a particular title before the closure must look for a currently authorized route instead.

Possible routes depend on the title:

  • Another current Xbox storefront: Some games removed from one storefront may remain available in a current-generation store or in a different region. Availability must be checked for the exact title and edition.
  • Backward-compatible purchase: If Xbox offers the game for purchase through a current storefront, that listing may provide a supported way to obtain it. A retired Xbox 360 listing alone does not.
  • Physical media: A compatible disc can provide another route for games that were released physically. This does not apply to digital-only games, and disc compatibility is title- and console-specific.
  • No supported route: If the game is delisted everywhere, was digital-only or has licensing restrictions, there may be no legitimate way for a new player to obtain it.

Do not assume that a second-hand disc restores access to downloadable expansions, online passes or other content that is no longer licensed or hosted.

Can you play a delisted Xbox 360 game on Xbox One?

Only if Xbox has made that exact title backward compatible. Backward compatibility is not universal for the Xbox 360 catalog. Microsoft’s Xbox One support guidance says a game included on the compatibility list can download and play on Xbox One, but that statement does not establish compatibility for every delisted Xbox 360 title.

Check the current compatibility or catalog information for the specific game before buying hardware or a disc. The title, region, edition and disc version can matter. A game’s absence from a current store page does not by itself prove that it is incompatible, and an old compatibility claim should not be treated as confirmation for a different edition.

What about Xbox Series X|S?

The evidence for the Xbox 360 closure and the cited backward-compatibility guidance does not establish a universal rule for Xbox Series X|S. Verify the exact game in current Xbox compatibility information. Do not buy a newer console on the assumption that every delisted Xbox 360 game will run on it.

Digital ownership, discs and console generations

Situation What it establishes What still needs checking
You purchased the digital Xbox 360 game before the store closure Xbox says previously purchased content remains playable and re-downloadable. The owning account, edition, region and any title-specific licensing issue.
You never purchased the digital game No entitlement is created by delisting or by a historical store page. Whether a current storefront or a legitimate physical release exists.
You own a physical disc A disc may provide a way to play a compatible release. Whether that edition works on your target console and whether required downloads remain available.
You want to use Xbox One Some Xbox 360 games download and play through backward compatibility. Whether the exact title and edition are on the current compatibility list.
You want to use Xbox Series X|S Not established universally by the Xbox 360 closure announcement. Current title-specific compatibility information.
You need multiplayer The closure announcement said players could continue connecting with friends. Whether that game’s own servers, matchmaking and online features are still operating.

Why a purchased game may not appear

The wrong account is signed in

Digital ownership follows the purchasing account. Family members can use the same console while having separate entitlements. Sign in to the account that completed the original transaction, not simply the profile that usually plays the game.

The console is showing the wrong generation or store

An Xbox 360 purchase, an Xbox One purchase and a backward-compatible listing can appear in different library views. Look in the owned-content or download-history area associated with the original platform as well as the current console’s games library.

The edition or region differs

Standard, special and bundle editions may have separate product records. Regional licensing can also affect what appears. Compare the original receipt, product name and region with the item you are searching for.

The game requires a license check

Connect the console to the internet, sign in again and retry the download or launch. A temporary account or service outage can resemble a missing entitlement.

The purchase was never completed

A download that was started, a free trial and a demo are not necessarily the same as a completed purchase. Check the account’s transaction history if the title is absent from the owned list.

What happens to downloadable content?

Xbox’s closure guidance covers previously purchased content, which can include downloadable content bought for an Xbox 360 game. However, the base game and each add-on can have separate entitlements. Confirm that the add-on was purchased by the same account and belongs to the same edition and region as the installed game.

A delisted add-on may no longer be available to new buyers even when existing owners can re-download it. Conversely, an add-on that was never purchased should not be assumed to become available merely because the base game is in your library.

Will multiplayer and online features still work?

The Xbox announcement said players could continue connecting with friends in the context of the Xbox 360 Store closure. That is not a permanent guarantee for every game’s online modes.

Online play can depend on the game publisher’s servers, matchmaking service, account authentication, downloadable updates and platform support. A game may remain installed and launch normally while its dedicated servers, leaderboards or online matchmaking no longer operate. Check the title’s current service status and community documentation for an online answer; the store’s delisting status alone cannot provide one.

A practical decision process

  1. Identify the platform and edition. Write down whether the game is an Xbox 360, Xbox One or newer-generation release, and whether you owned a standard, bundle or special edition.
  2. Confirm ownership. Sign in to the purchasing account and inspect owned games, download history and transaction records.
  3. Separate ownership from compatibility. A valid Xbox 360 entitlement does not automatically mean the title runs on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S.
  4. Check the exact compatibility listing. Search by title and edition rather than relying on a general statement that Xbox 360 games are supported.
  5. Consider physical media only where appropriate. Verify that the game had a disc release and that the disc is compatible with the console you intend to use.
  6. Check online requirements. Determine whether the game’s servers and online modes still operate if multiplayer matters to you.
  7. Troubleshoot before replacing hardware. Resolve account, region, edition and service issues before assuming a new console or disc will solve the problem.

What the July 29, 2024 date does—and does not—mean

July 29, 2024 is the announced date when new purchases through the Xbox 360 Store and Xbox 360 Marketplace stopped being supported. It is not a universal delisting date for all Xbox games, and it does not mark the end of play or re-download access for previously purchased Xbox 360 content covered by Xbox’s policy.

Individual games can disappear earlier or later because of music, sports, character, publisher or other licenses. A title can also remain playable for owners while being unavailable to new customers. Treat the store closure, an individual delisting and an online-service shutdown as three separate events.

When an Xbox 360 console is still relevant

If a title is not backward compatible but you already own it digitally, an Xbox 360 may remain the relevant hardware for playing it, provided the console can access the account entitlement and the game’s required services. Buying an Xbox 360 does not grant a game that you never purchased, and the availability of a used console does not prove that a particular title or add-on can still be obtained.

For any used hardware or disc, verify the exact edition, region and condition before purchase. A physical copy also does not guarantee that online modes, downloadable expansions or authentication services will continue indefinitely.

The short answer for common cases

  • Bought digitally before delisting: In the Xbox 360 closure case, Xbox says you can continue to play and re-download it.
  • Never bought it: You cannot use re-download access as a way to claim it; look for a current authorized listing or compatible physical release.
  • Want to play on Xbox One: Confirm that the exact game is backward compatible.
  • Have a disc: Verify that the particular disc edition works on the target console.
  • Need online play: Check the game’s own servers and services; delisting does not answer that question.
