Yes, VCRs are still possible to buy, but a “new” listing usually means old stock—not a newly manufactured standalone machine. If you want to watch or preserve VHS tapes, check the tape’s regional format, recording speed, the deck’s connections and its tested condition before buying. For recordings that matter, plan to digitize them rather than rely on a VCR and aging tapes indefinitely.
Are new VCRs still being manufactured?
The Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) says standalone VCRs were no longer being manufactured as of 2014. That makes a listing described as “new” potentially sealed, unsold old stock rather than a recently made machine. A specialist retailer says Funai made its final VCR-DVD combo in 2016, but that historical detail is the retailer’s account, not a manufacturer announcement.
Used, refurbished and old-stock units may still turn up, but availability and prices depend on location and change over time. A UK transfer lab points to marketplaces, charity shops and specialist refurbishers as possible places to look; that is UK-specific guidance, not a guarantee of stock elsewhere.

Before shopping, identify the cassette and, if possible, the standard and speed at which it was recorded. VHS machines were made for particular regions and television standards, so do not assume a deck made for one region will play tapes from another. For example, North American NTSC and European PAL tapes are not automatically interchangeable. The University of British Columbia’s VCR equipment guide explains these compatibility considerations.

Check format and recording speed
- Standard VHS: Confirm the machine supports the tape’s regional standard and recording speed.
- SP, LP and EP/SLP: A deck may not support every playback speed. If you do not know how a tape was recorded, seek a player that supports all relevant speeds.
- VHS-C: These compact camcorder cassettes are not standard full-size VHS tapes. They require a compatible VHS-C adapter and a full-size VCR, if appropriate for that cassette.
- S-VHS: For S-VHS recordings, choose a proper S-VHS deck. UBC notes that S-VHS machines can also play regular VHS tapes, while “quasi S-VHS” models do not provide full S-VHS quality.
- Stereo or Hi-Fi audio: If sound quality matters, verify that the deck supports the audio format used on your tapes.
Match the outputs to your TV or capture setup
Many consumer VCRs use composite video and RCA audio connections; some also provide S-Video. UBC recommends S-Video for digitization because it can provide a better-quality video signal and is often found alongside better video-processing circuitry. A television with only HDMI inputs will need a compatible conversion path between the VCR and TV. The available sources do not establish which current converters work best, so check compatibility with the exact equipment you plan to use.

CCI recommends migrating analog recordings to digital rather than relying on repeated analog copying. UBC’s guide covers VCR features relevant to digitization; neither source endorses a specific capture device or transfer company.

What to verify when buying
- Ask what “new” means. Find out whether the unit is used, refurbished or new old stock. A sealed box does not prove that an old mechanical device still works.
- Confirm compatibility. Check the regional standard, cassette type, playback speeds and any stereo or Hi-Fi requirement against the tapes you own.
- Inspect the connections. Make sure the VCR’s video and audio outputs work with your television or capture setup. If the TV is HDMI-only, account for the required conversion path.
- Check the return terms and test status. Ask what was tested and what happens if playback fails. A UK transfer lab advises testing a newly acquired VCR with a replaceable shop-bought tape before inserting an irreplaceable recording.
- Read combo-unit specifications carefully. A DVD player/VCR combo is not necessarily a DVD recorder. A specialist seller says player combos cannot record VHS to DVD, while recorder combos can transfer home-recorded tapes; it also notes that commercial tapes may be copy-protected. Verify the exact unit’s specifications and applicable restrictions.
Why preserving important tapes deserves a plan
CCI gives an average magnetic-tape lifetime of 10 to 30 years. This is a broad average, not a prediction for an individual cassette: condition and storage history matter, and the figure does not guarantee that a particular tape will remain playable for any set period. CCI also says the supply of good machines and tapes is declining.

In its 2020 technical bulletin, CCI states: “The information stored on these analog tapes needs to be migrated to a newer format if it is to remain accessible.” If you digitize at home, the VCR is only one part of the setup: the capture device and software must accept the deck’s outputs, and you need to check playback before committing an important recording. For a tape you cannot risk testing yourself, a transfer service is another route; confirm its handling process and deliverables before sending originals.
