Yes. Save the Copilot Audio Overview as an MP3 in OneDrive, then share that audio file. The recipient needs permission to the MP3, not to the Word documents, PDFs, meeting recordings, or other files used to create it. Sharing the Copilot Notebook instead is different: it can expose the notebook workspace and request access to linked sources, but it does not guarantee that every source file will open for the recipient.
The two different things you can share
Copilot Audio Overview is an audio rendering of reference material, but the audio and the material behind it have separate permissions. Decide first whether the recipient needs only to listen or also needs to inspect the sources and ask Copilot questions grounded in them.
Share the saved audio file
When an overview is saved to OneDrive, Microsoft documents it as an MP3 in the Recordings folder. That MP3 is an ordinary OneDrive file. You can grant access to specific people or create a sharing link according to your organization’s policy. The recipient can play the file after receiving permission, even if they cannot open the original source documents.

This is the appropriate route for a listen-only handoff: a narrated briefing, meeting recap, study summary, or internal update where the listener does not need to browse the evidence behind the narration.

Share the Copilot Notebook
A Notebook is a workspace, not merely an audio attachment. Microsoft Support says, “Sharing a notebook doesn’t just share the notebook, it can also give others access to files inside it.” The page, titled Share a Microsoft Copilot Notebook, was last updated in June 2026. The owner must be able to share each linked file, and some recipients may have to request access. A notebook invitation therefore does not create a universal pass to every source.
Notebook sharing is useful when collaborators need the workspace, references, and source-grounded Copilot interaction. It is excessive—and potentially exposes more material than intended—when the person only needs the audio.
Why permission to the MP3 is independent
Saving the overview creates a new file. OneDrive evaluates permission on that file separately from permission on the inputs that produced it. Giving someone access to the MP3 does not grant access to the source documents, and giving someone a source document does not automatically grant access to the saved recording. Treat the MP3 as a derivative publication with its own audience and sensitivity level.

Identify where the overview was created
Microsoft uses similar audio-overview terminology across several products. The exact limits and eligibility rules vary by surface, so use the matching row below before troubleshooting.

Feature rollout, licensing, supported formats, and tenant settings can change. If your interface does not match these labels, check the current Microsoft Support page for the specific product surface you are using.
How to share the audio without sharing the source files
- Open the overview player. In OneDrive or the Notebook player, locate the generated overview. Confirm that you are working with the overview itself rather than a link to the Notebook or a source document.
- Choose Save to OneDrive. The Notebook help flow and OneDrive documentation describe this option. In the documented OneDrive workflow, the saved output is an MP3 placed in the Recordings folder. If the command is missing, the input may be encrypted or the feature may not be available for that account or rollout.
- Locate the MP3 in OneDrive. Select the file and open Share. Verify the filename, date, and duration so you do not accidentally share a source recording or another file with a similar name.
- Choose the narrowest audience. Enter the recipient’s account under a people-specific sharing option when the listener is known. A link option can be convenient, but only use the link scope allowed by your organization. OneDrive files are private until you share them, and administrators can restrict anonymous or external links.
- Send the invitation or link. Tell the recipient that the permission covers an audio file only. They should be able to play or download the MP3 according to the permission level you selected, without opening the underlying references.
- Test from the recipient’s identity. If the recipient is external, use a separate browser profile or ask them to confirm access while signed in to the exact account that received the invitation. A link opened under the wrong Microsoft account can look like a sharing failure.
The recipient will hear the generated narration, but the MP3 does not carry the source documents, Notebook controls, or source-grounded Copilot conversation with it. If those capabilities are required, use the separate Notebook-and-source sharing process described next.

What happens when you share the Notebook instead
Recipients may receive more than an audio player
A Notebook invitation can expose the workspace and may invite recipients to linked files. Depending on each file’s permissions, they might be able to read some references, see a request-access prompt for others, or encounter a file that the owner cannot re-share. The Notebook invitation should therefore be treated as a collaborative access change, not as an audio delivery mechanism.
Linked-file permissions are evaluated individually
The Notebook owner needs permission to share a linked source before the service can pass access onward. Permission transfer can fail for certain files, and a recipient may need to request access from the file owner. A premium source can also have additional plan restrictions. Consequently, a person may open the Notebook and still be unable to open one or more references used in the overview.
Notebook access enables a different experience
With the relevant Notebook and source permissions, a collaborator can inspect references and use Copilot against that material. This is fundamentally different from listening to a static MP3. Grant only the level of access that matches the task: audio-only for distribution, or Notebook plus individual sources for collaborative analysis.

Eligibility, language, and content limits
OneDrive and related document flows
Microsoft’s OneDrive documentation describes overviews for Word documents, PDFs, and Teams meeting recordings. It specifies English-only operation, a minimum of 200 words, and generation that may take a few minutes. Saving is available for non-encrypted files. A SharePoint support page describes a related document and News post flow with the same 200-word and English-only details. Those figures are workflow-specific; do not apply them automatically to every Notebook account.
Notebook audio overviews
The Notebook page requires at least one reference file and lists eight audio languages: English, Spanish, Japanese, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, and Chinese. It also states that a Microsoft Copilot license is required for Copilot Notebooks and that an active SharePoint or OneDrive license is required to create notebooks. The audio-overview availability described there is for commercial Microsoft 365 users with work or school Entra ID accounts. The page mentions Personal, Family, and Premium Notebook availability in other contexts, but that does not prove that those consumer plans include Notebook audio overviews.
Encryption and file type constraints
In the documented OneDrive route, an encrypted source can prevent saving the generated audio. Encryption is therefore a reason the Save to OneDrive command may be unavailable, not evidence that sharing permissions are misconfigured. If the source is protected, ask the owner or administrator whether an approved, non-encrypted derivative can be created; do not remove protection merely to force an export.

Troubleshoot the common failure points
There is no Save to OneDrive command
- Confirm that you are in an audio-overview player, not a preview of a source file.
- Check whether the OneDrive workflow is using an encrypted file; Microsoft documents saving for non-encrypted files.
- Verify that your account and product surface support the feature. Notebook and OneDrive eligibility are not identical.
- Allow the overview to finish generating. Microsoft says the OneDrive process may take a few minutes.
The recipient sees an access-denied message
- Open the MP3’s Manage access panel and confirm that the recipient’s exact account is listed.
- Ask the recipient to sign in with that account rather than a personal or alternate work account.
- Review whether external sharing, link type, download permissions, or domain restrictions are enforced by the organization.
- Create a people-specific invitation if a broad link is blocked. There is no single tenant configuration that guarantees external access for every organization.
The recipient can hear the file but needs to verify the facts
Generated audio can contain inaccuracies or glitches. Microsoft warns about this in its SharePoint documentation. For consequential decisions, share an approved transcript or the relevant source document as a separate permissioned item, or provide a human-reviewed summary. Do not assume that access to the MP3 provides a way to inspect the evidence.
The listener asks questions about the sources
A saved MP3 cannot answer follow-up questions or provide source-grounded citations. Share the Notebook and each required source file only when the recipient is authorized to use them. If a linked file remains restricted, the recipient must request access from its owner; the audio permission cannot substitute for that approval.
Privacy and governance checks before sending
- Classify the audio. The narration may repeat confidential names, decisions, or meeting details even when the source files are not shared.
- Check the audience. A link that works for anyone in an organization can be broader than a named-recipient invitation. Follow your tenant’s sharing policy.
- Review the content. Generated audio can misstate a point or include an unintended passage. Listen to the file before distribution.
- Use a separate file for corrections. If the overview is wrong, revise or regenerate it rather than assuming that changing source permissions will alter an already saved MP3.
- Record the intended scope. Tell recipients whether they received listen-only access or authorization to inspect the Notebook and references. This avoids accidental requests for broader permissions.

The practical rule is simple: save and share the MP3 when the deliverable is the listening experience; share the Notebook only when the recipient is authorized to work with the underlying material.
