You cannot set up official Halo: Combat Evolved split-screen multiplayer on a Nintendo 64. Halo: Combat Evolved was released for Xbox, not Nintendo 64. Its documented split-screen features belong to the Xbox versions, so no N64 menu, controller adapter, cartridge accessory, or console setting can enable the game on Nintendo’s 64-bit system.
The direct answer
There is no official Nintendo 64 version of Halo: Combat Evolved. Nintendo’s official Nintendo 64 game catalog does not list the title, and the game’s manuals document multiplayer for Xbox hardware.
That makes the requested combination—Halo: Combat Evolved running on an N64 with split-screen multiplayer—unavailable as an official setup. You would need a release made for a supported platform; changing controllers or adding an N64 multiplayer accessory cannot substitute for a port of the game itself.

The original Halo: Combat Evolved Xbox manual states that its multiplayer option allows up to four players to play in split-screen mode on one Xbox system. This is feature documentation for the Xbox release, not for Nintendo 64.

Campaign co-op in Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary
Microsoft’s Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary manual documents playing the original campaign in split-screen mode with a friend offline, or joining a friend’s lobby through Xbox LIVE. That statement applies to the Anniversary release and its supported Xbox environment; it does not establish an N64 version.

Nintendo’s official Nintendo 64 catalog contains no Halo: Combat Evolved entry. A game absent from the platform’s official catalog cannot be launched through an ordinary N64 game menu or accessory.

Why an adapter or extra controller cannot solve it
Nintendo 64 accessories can add controllers or support multiplayer in games that were programmed for the N64. They do not translate an Xbox game into N64 software. The console still lacks the game’s executable code, assets, and platform-specific support.

- More controllers: They only provide additional input devices to an N64 game that recognizes them.
- Controller adapters: They change how signals are presented; they do not provide a Halo game cartridge or port.
- Multitaps and similar accessories: They cannot add a missing title to Nintendo’s software catalog.
- Video or audio adapters: They may change how a console connects to a display, but they do not make software compatible.
Be especially cautious with listings that describe an “N64 Halo” cartridge, adapter, or setup guide. Without an independently documented, officially supported port, such a product should not be treated as a way to run the Xbox game.

Supported ways to play the documented local experience
If your goal is local split-screen play, use a platform and release whose own documentation includes that feature.

How to avoid a misleading setup guide
- Identify the exact edition. “Halo,” “Halo CE,” and “Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary” can refer to different releases. The manual for one edition cannot prove compatibility for another.
- Confirm the platform in an official catalog or manual. A product photograph, fan listing, or video title is not proof that an N64 release exists.
- Check the multiplayer mode. Split-screen competitive multiplayer and campaign co-op are different features. Verify which one the release documents.
- Check the local player limit. The original Xbox manual specifically documents up to four players for split-screen multiplayer. Do not transfer that number to another edition or mode without documentation.
- Separate local and online play. A manual may describe offline split-screen and online lobby play as different options. An online service requirement does not create local support, and local support does not guarantee that an online service remains available.
Common misconceptions
“The N64 has four controller ports, so it should support four-player Halo.”
Controller ports are only an input capability. A game must be released for the console and programmed to use those ports. The documented four-player statement belongs to the Xbox version.

“A cartridge dump or adapter can make the Xbox version run.”
There is no official N64 release to load. An adapter that accepts a different cartridge format does not convert Xbox software into N64 software, and a claim that it does should not be confused with manufacturer-supported compatibility.

Videos can show emulation, nonstandard hardware, editing, or an unrelated game. They do not change the official platform record. For a dependable setup, verify the edition and multiplayer feature in documentation for that exact release.

“Halo CE Anniversary proves the N64 version existed.”
Anniversary is a separate release. Microsoft’s manual documents its supported Xbox experience; it does not add the game to Nintendo’s N64 catalog.

Your N64 can still provide local multiplayer, but you need a multiplayer game released for that console. Select a title from Nintendo’s official N64 catalog, then follow that game’s own controller and player-count instructions. Do not buy an N64 accessory specifically to run Halo: Combat Evolved; the accessory cannot supply the missing software.
If playing Halo is the priority, obtain an Xbox release or another separately supported modern release and check its current manual for local campaign co-op, competitive split-screen, player limits, and any online-service requirements. Those details are edition-specific and should not be inferred from the N64 hardware.
Bottom line for the requested setup
There is no sequence of N64 menus or accessories that will produce official Halo: Combat Evolved split-screen multiplayer. The feature is documented for Xbox releases, while Nintendo’s official N64 catalog has no Halo: Combat Evolved entry.
