If you mean 5% automotive window tint, you can generally see out through it in bright daylight, but seeing through it becomes much harder at night or anywhere with little light. A 5% visible light transmission (VLT) rating means the film passes only 5% of visible light, making it extremely dark. The phrase “5 tint” can mean other things, but this article addresses the likely automotive-tint question.
What does 5% tint mean?
VLT is the share of visible light transmitted through the tint. A lower percentage means less visible light passes through; 5% tint transmits 5% according to Engineer Fix (2025). That figure describes the tint rating, not a safety-test result.
The view depends on light on both sides of the glass. A window that seems usable in bright daylight may offer a much darker view at night, in a dim parking area, or on a poorly lit road. There is no single visibility outcome for every driver or situation.

Expect substantially reduced visibility compared with bright daylight. In low-light conditions, less light reaches the driver through the glazing, which can make it harder to detect vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, or road signs in time. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says in Interpretation 2171y: “To the extent that some of the available light is not transmitted through the vehicle glazing, the driver’s ability to react to the traffic situation is potentially delayed.”

Nighttime is not the only concern: NHTSA also identifies very overcast weather as a low-light condition. A stationary view through a tinted window is different from using that window to drive; driving requires seeing hazards and responding while conditions change.
How does 5% compare with lighter tint?
The established comparison is the VLT rating: lower VLT means less visible light passes through. The sources cited here do not provide a controlled side-by-side test or measured visibility results comparing 5% with other tint levels, so a precise performance difference cannot be stated.

Is 5% tint legal on a car?
There is no universal answer: the applicable rule depends on where the vehicle is registered and driven, as well as the vehicle and window. NHTSA explains that federal glazing requirements for new vehicles specify at least 70% light transmittance for windows requisite for driving visibility. That federal figure is not a universal aftermarket-tint limit for every window or jurisdiction. NHTSA also notes that state authorities may regulate vehicle-owner modifications. Before installing film, check the current rules that apply to your location, vehicle, and specific window. NHTSA’s Interpretation 1985-03.16 says minimum visibility levels are necessary to allow the average driver to detect other vehicles, pedestrians, bicyclists, and traffic and road signs under all lighting conditions.

What to consider before choosing 5% tint
- Driving conditions: Consider whether you regularly drive at night, in poor weather, or on roads and in parking areas with limited lighting.
- Window location: A window’s role in driving visibility can affect which requirements apply; do not assume one rule covers every pane.
- Local requirements: Confirm the current law and vehicle-specific requirements before installation.
- Visibility needs: A film’s darkness rating alone cannot predict exactly what you will see from every vehicle or in every lighting condition.
