Clouds can block your view of meteors; city lights make faint ones harder to see; and a telescope is usually the wrong tool. For the best chance of spotting a meteor shower, find a safe, open place with clear, dark sky and watch with your unaided eyes.
Can you see meteors through clouds?
Not through opaque cloud cover. Clouds obstruct the direct view of the sky, and no observing accessory makes meteors visible through them. If only part of the sky is cloudy, watch the clear opening. If clouds interfere on a shower’s peak night, check the forecast for later hours or nearby nights; activity can remain strong around a peak, though the best timing depends on the particular shower.
Can you see a meteor shower from a city?
Often, yes—but expect to see fewer meteors. City and street lights brighten the background sky, reducing contrast and hiding fainter meteors. Brighter meteors may still stand out when skies are clear. NASA recommends getting away from city or street lights; its practical suggestion of going 20 to 30 miles beyond city limits is a rule of thumb, not a guarantee, since local lighting and terrain vary. NASA’s guide to finding a stargazing location also describes the Bortle scale, which rates sky darkness across nine classes: class 1 is darkest and class 9 represents the most light-polluted city sky.

Darkness helps, but it is only one part of a good location. Look for a place with a broad, unobstructed view and as much cloud-free sky as possible, while considering safe access and comfort. A very dark spot with trees blocking most of the sky—or unsafe access—may be less useful than a clearer, safer location.

Should you use a telescope?
No. Meteors can flash across different parts of the sky, while a telescope’s narrow field of view makes it easier to miss them. The American Meteor Society says, “Meteor showers are best observed with the unaided eye.” NASA likewise says a telescope or binoculars are unnecessary for watching a shower. NASA’s meteor-shower explainer describes why these events are suited to naked-eye viewing.
How to watch for a meteor shower
- Find a safe, open spot. Choose the clearest, darkest location you can reach safely, away from direct streetlights if possible.
- Let your eyes adjust. The American Meteor Society advises allowing at least 20–30 minutes for dark adaptation. Bright screens and lights can undermine it, so keep them out of view while watching.
- Look broadly, not only at the radiant. The radiant is the point from which meteors appear to originate. Watch a wide area of sky, roughly halfway between the horizon and overhead, rather than staring only at that point.
- Give it time. Meteor activity is uneven, so there may be pauses between sightings. A reclining lounge chair can make a long watch more comfortable, but it does not improve visibility.
For shower-specific dates and timing, check a current annual calendar for your location. NASA’s Orionids viewing guidance includes general advice, but its timing applies to that shower rather than to every meteor shower.
