Usually, no—eject or unmount a USB drive before unplugging it. That gives the operating system time to finish pending writes and stop programs using the volume. Windows has a documented exception: a device using the Quick removal policy can generally be disconnected without the Safely Remove Hardware command. A device using Better performance may cache writes, so Windows requires safe removal. On macOS, use Finder’s eject control. On Ubuntu, unmount first. If you are unsure which policy or operating system behavior applies, ejecting is the safer default.

The practical rule

Use the operating system’s eject, unmount, or safely-remove command, then disconnect the cable or flash drive only after the system confirms that it is no longer in use. A file copy that appears complete is not, by itself, a system-level guarantee that every write has reached the device. Background writes, indexing, antivirus scans, synchronization, or an open document can still keep the volume active.

  • Windows 10 and Windows 11: use Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media unless the drive is explicitly configured for Quick removal.
  • macOS: eject the volume in Finder and wait for it to disappear.
  • Ubuntu and other Linux desktops: unmount the volume before disconnecting.

The risk is not that every sudden unplug damages a drive. The risk is that unplugging while data is being written or files are in use can cause lost data or an inconsistent filesystem.

Why ejecting matters

USB storage is treated as a mounted volume by the operating system. Applications write through the operating system rather than directly to the flash memory or disk. The system may queue or cache those writes, update directory information later, or keep a file open for an application. Ejecting or unmounting is the operating system’s controlled handoff: it finishes eligible writes, checks for active use, and removes the volume from the filesystem.

Microsoft’s Windows policy documentation states that removing or disconnecting a device without following safe-removal instructions risks losing data. Ubuntu documentation similarly warns that disconnecting without unmounting can result in data loss or filesystem corruption. These are qualitative warnings, not a measured probability of failure; no universal damage rate can be inferred from them.

Windows 10 and Windows 11: the policy determines the exception

Windows applies a removal policy to each storage device. Microsoft says Quick removal has been the default beginning with Windows 10 version 1809. It disables Windows disk-write caching for that device, allowing removal without using the safe-removal process in ordinary circumstances. Better performance enables caching that can improve throughput, but Windows then requires Safely Remove Hardware so cached operations can finish.

Windows policy What Windows does What to do before unplugging
Quick removal Windows avoids disk-write caching for the device. This has been the default since Windows 10 version 1809. Microsoft permits removal without Safely Remove Hardware, but ejecting remains the cautious choice when files may be open or activity is unclear.
Better performance Windows can cache writes to improve performance. Use Safely Remove Hardware and wait for the safe-removal confirmation before disconnecting.

The policy is tied to the device and remains in effect when that device is reconnected to the same computer port. It is not a universal property of every USB drive: the setting can differ on another computer or after an administrator changes it.

How to safely remove a drive

  1. Finish the copy or save operation and close documents stored on the USB drive.
  2. Close applications that may be reading from or writing to the drive.
  3. In the notification area, select the Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media icon.
  4. Select Eject <device>.
  5. Wait for the Safe To Remove Hardware notification and for the device to disappear from the eject menu.
  6. Disconnect the USB drive.

If Windows reports that the device is still in use, do not repeatedly pull it out. Close the application named in the warning, check open File Explorer windows, and try the eject command again. A background process can hold a file even when no visible copy dialog is open.

How to check the removal policy

To see which behavior applies, open the device’s properties in Windows and look for the Policies tab and its Removal policy setting. If it shows Quick removal, Windows’ documented exception applies. If it shows Better performance, treat safe removal as mandatory. Because the policy is per device and port, check again when using the drive on a different computer.

What Quick removal does not guarantee

Quick removal is not permission to ignore active applications, disconnect during a write, or assume that every operating system will behave the same way. It reduces Windows’ disk-write caching for that device; it does not prevent an application from keeping files open, and it does not protect unsaved work. When in doubt, use the eject command.

macOS: eject in Finder

On a Mac, Apple’s supported procedure is to eject the volume in Finder before unplugging it. You can use any of these methods:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Select the drive in Finder and choose File > Eject.
  2. Click the eject button next to the volume in the Finder sidebar.
  3. If the drive icon is on the desktop, drag it to the Trash. The Trash icon changes to an eject symbol while you do this.

Wait until the volume disappears from Finder or the desktop. Only then disconnect the USB device. Ejecting tells macOS to finish its work and release the mounted volume.

If macOS says the disk cannot be ejected

Apple says this message can mean that an app or another user is using one or more files on the disk. Save and close documents located on the drive, quit applications that may be accessing it, and retry the eject action. If it still fails, log out and try again. If logging out does not resolve the lock, shut down the Mac before disconnecting, then start it again.

Do not force the cable out merely because the last visible copy window has closed. The warning indicates that macOS still sees activity or an open handle on the volume.

Ubuntu and Linux: unmount before disconnecting

Ubuntu’s USB guidance uses the term unmount. In the file manager, select the drive’s eject or unmount control and wait for the volume to disappear. Unmounting does not complete until pending data has finished writing or programs have stopped using the device. That waiting behavior is a protection, not a failure.

umount /media/$USER/DRIVE_NAME

Replace the mounted path with the one assigned on your system; the command must target the mounted volume, not an arbitrary folder. If the command reports that the target is busy, close terminals, file-manager windows, media players, editors, or other programs using the drive, then run it again. Disconnect only after the unmount completes.

Ubuntu documentation warns that skipping unmount can cause data loss or filesystem corruption. That warning applies even when a copy dialog has finished, because another process may still be writing metadata or holding a file open. Ubuntu is one Linux distribution’s documented behavior; other distributions and desktop environments can present different controls, but the same unmount-first principle is the safe practice.

What if you already pulled the drive out?

Do not immediately reconnect it and start another large transfer. First consider what was happening when it was removed:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • If no files were open and no write was in progress, the drive may work normally, especially under Windows Quick removal, but that cannot be confirmed from the unplug event alone.
  • If a copy, save, rename, or deletion was active, reconnect the drive and check whether the expected files open and have plausible sizes.
  • If the operating system reports that the volume needs repair, use its built-in filesystem-check or repair prompt and keep a separate copy of any recoverable files.
  • If files are missing or unreadable, stop writing new data to the drive. Further writes can overwrite information that might otherwise be recoverable.

There is no universal percentage chance that an abrupt removal will corrupt a drive. The outcome depends on the operating system policy, whether writes were pending, and which files or filesystem structures were active at that moment.

Common situations and the right response

“The copy bar reached 100 percent.”

Let the copy operation finish, close the destination window, and still use eject or unmount. A completed-looking transfer does not establish that every queued write or metadata update has finished.

“The drive has an activity light, but it is not blinking.”

An activity light is useful but not a complete operating-system status signal. Use the system’s eject or unmount confirmation rather than relying on the light alone.

“I always pull it out and nothing has happened.”

Past success does not remove the risk. Some removals occur when no writes are pending; another removal can happen during a delayed write and produce a different result.

“Can I make every computer safe for instant removal?”

No single setting applies everywhere. Windows Quick removal affects that device on that Windows computer and persists when reconnected to the same port. macOS and Ubuntu still provide eject or unmount workflows, and a different computer can use different policies.

A quick checklist before unplugging

  1. Stop copying, saving, recording, or exporting to the USB volume.
  2. Close files and applications that opened content from it.
  3. Use the operating system’s eject, unmount, or Safely Remove Hardware control.
  4. Wait for the confirmation or for the volume to disappear.
  5. Disconnect the drive only after that signal.

For Windows devices explicitly set to Quick removal, Microsoft documents removal without the safe-removal command as an exception. Ejecting remains the most portable habit because it also works when the same drive is used with macOS, Ubuntu, another Windows policy, or a system whose activity is not obvious.
