Yes. Linux can run many Windows desktop applications through Wine and many Windows games through Valve’s Proton, especially games distributed through Steam. Neither route is a universal Windows replacement: success depends on the exact program or game version, Linux distribution, hardware, drivers, launcher, digital-rights management, anti-cheat configuration and publisher decisions. Check the specific title before you rely on it.

What “run Windows software on Linux” actually means

Linux does not normally execute Windows programs as native Linux applications. Instead, compatibility software translates or implements the Windows interfaces that a program expects. The program remains a Windows build, while Linux supplies the operating environment around it.

That distinction matters because compatibility is measured per application or game, not by a blanket statement such as “Wine supports Windows” or “Linux supports Steam.” One title may work with no changes, another may need a particular configuration, and a third may fail after an update. A working result can also differ between distributions, graphics drivers, hardware, launchers and versions of the compatibility tool.

Native Linux software is a separate option

If the publisher offers a native Linux edition, that is usually the simplest route. A native build uses Linux libraries and interfaces directly rather than recreating Windows behavior. It may still have its own hardware requirements and bugs, but it avoids a Windows-compatibility layer.

When no native edition exists, choose the compatibility route that matches the software. Wine is intended for general Windows applications. Proton is Valve’s Steam-oriented tool for Windows games. Proton should not be treated as a general-purpose solution for arbitrary Windows desktop software.

Wine for regular Windows applications

Wine is a compatibility layer for running Windows applications on Linux and other POSIX-compliant systems. Wine is not a Windows installation or a virtual machine: it does not provide a complete Windows desktop, and its ability to run one application does not establish that every application will work.

How to judge an application before installing it

Use WineHQ’s application database for the exact program and version. Individual entries contain user-submitted test results, configuration tips and reports about what works or fails. Prefer recent reports that match your operating system, hardware and the application release you intend to use.

  1. Identify the exact software. Record the product name, edition, major version, installer type and any required companion services. “The program” is often too vague for a useful compatibility check.
  2. Look for a native Linux release. If one exists and meets your needs, compare it before choosing a Windows build.
  3. Search the WineHQ application database. Read several recent reports rather than relying on a single rating or old result.
  4. Check the known limitations. Pay attention to missing features, rendering problems, required components, installer failures and whether a report applies only to an older release.
  5. Test with non-critical data first. Keep working files backed up and avoid making an unverified compatibility setup your only copy of an important workflow.

What Wine can and cannot tell you

A positive report means that a particular person achieved a particular result under stated conditions. It is useful evidence, not a guarantee. A negative report may reflect an obsolete Wine version, a changed installer, a missing dependency or a program that relies on Windows services Wine does not implement fully.

Business software can be especially sensitive to licensing components, device drivers, plug-ins, Office integration, hardware security keys or corporate authentication. For those applications, confirm that every required feature works—not merely that the installer opens.

Proton and Steam for Windows games

Valve’s Proton is a Steam compatibility tool for Windows-only games on Linux. Steam Play can allow a Windows-only Steam game to run on Linux, but Valve’s wording is deliberately potential support rather than a promise that every title will launch or remain playable.

Choosing Proton for an individual game

Steam lets you select a compatibility tool for an individual title. In the game’s Steam properties, open the compatibility settings, enable the option to force a particular Steam Play compatibility tool, and test the available choice. The exact options can change as Valve publishes new tools, so record which selection works for your installation.

Do not assume that the newest option is automatically best. A game update can introduce a regression, while a newer tool can fix an older launch or graphics problem. If a title stops working, compare the current default with another available tool and check recent reports for that game.

Steam requirements still apply

Steam’s compatibility layer does not remove the game’s hardware requirements. Check the store page for the required processor, memory, graphics hardware, storage and supported operating systems. A game can be marked as compatible yet run poorly on hardware below its requirements, and a powerful computer can still encounter a title-specific launcher or anti-cheat block.

Wine and Proton compared

Question Wine Proton
Primary purpose General Windows applications Windows games distributed through Steam
How you use it Usually app-specific installation and configuration Selected from Steam’s per-game compatibility settings
Best evidence to check Recent reports for the exact application in WineHQ’s application database Current Steam game information and SteamOS compatibility information where relevant
Main constraints Application version, required Windows components, hardware, drivers and integrations Game hardware requirements, launcher behavior, DRM, anti-cheat and publisher configuration

The table describes intended use, not a guarantee of outcome. Some technical components overlap in the wider Linux gaming ecosystem, but the practical decision remains simple: start with Wine for a normal Windows application and Proton inside Steam for a Windows game.

Can you play every Windows game on Linux?

No. The decisive question is not only whether the game starts, but whether all of its required services work. Single-player games may be easier to support than competitive multiplayer titles that depend on kernel-level or separately configured anti-cheat systems.

Anti-cheat and publisher decisions

Anti-cheat support is title-specific and can change when a publisher changes its configuration. A game that worked after one update may stop working when the publisher changes its anti-cheat policy, and a game that launches may still reject online play.

  • Expandable Storage: Add more space with a microSD card slot, ensuring you can bring even more games with you.
  • Versatile Controls: With built-in thumbsticks, trackpads, and touchscreen controls, you have full control over your gaming experience.

Before changing operating systems for a multiplayer game, check the publisher’s current support statement for Linux, Proton or SteamOS. Do not rely on a generic list of “working anti-cheat systems”; there is no single permanent compatibility answer that covers every title and configuration.

Launchers and digital-rights management

Some Steam games start an additional launcher, sign-in service or DRM layer. The game itself may be compatible while that extra component is not. Check whether the title requires a separate account, an external launcher, always-online authentication or a specific version of a third-party service.

A pre-purchase and pre-install checklist

  1. Name the exact title and version. Include the edition, expansion, launcher and multiplayer mode you intend to use.
  2. Separate native and Windows releases. A native Linux build, if available, should be evaluated independently from the Windows build.
  3. For applications, read WineHQ reports. Prefer current entries with details that match your distribution and hardware.
  4. For Steam games, read the Steam requirements. Confirm both the supported operating-system information and the hardware requirements.
  5. Check SteamOS information for Steam Deck or SteamOS. Valve’s Verified information is a useful signal for that platform, but it is not a guarantee for every update, mode or peripheral.
  6. Investigate multiplayer dependencies. Verify current anti-cheat and publisher support for the exact game.
  7. Plan a fallback. Keep access to another supported system, a refund window where applicable, or a native alternative if the title is essential.

Steam Deck and SteamOS

Steam Deck uses Linux-based SteamOS. Proton is the mechanism that enables broad access to a Steam library containing many Windows games. Valve’s SteamOS Verified information helps indicate how a game behaves on that platform, including whether its controls, display and system-level behavior meet Valve’s criteria.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verified status should be treated as a decision aid rather than a permanent promise. Game patches, launcher changes, anti-cheat settings and SteamOS updates can alter results. Check the game’s current information and its hardware needs before buying or configuring a Deck for a specific title.

Hardware, drivers and performance expectations

Compatibility and performance are separate questions. A game may launch successfully but deliver unacceptable frame rates, stutter, long shader-compilation pauses or broken features. Graphics drivers, processor capability, available memory, storage speed, display resolution and power limits all affect the result.

  • Meet or exceed the game’s stated hardware requirements. Proton cannot compensate for an underpowered graphics processor or insufficient memory.
  • Use a supported graphics driver. Driver behavior can determine whether rendering, video playback or controller support works correctly.
  • Allow for translation overhead. A compatibility layer can add processing work, although the impact differs by title and hardware.
  • Test the scenes that matter. A menu or opening level is not proof that a demanding late-game area or multiplayer match will perform acceptably.
  • Check peripherals separately. Steering wheels, anti-cheat devices, specialized controllers and proprietary audio hardware can require support beyond the game executable.

Troubleshooting when a title fails

The installer or launcher will not open

Confirm that you selected the compatibility path for the right software, then compare the exact version with current WineHQ or Steam reports. A launcher update can be the failed component even when the underlying game or application previously worked. Look for reports describing the same installer and authentication flow.

The program launches but graphics are broken

Check the graphics driver, the application’s rendering mode and recent compatibility-tool changes. If a game worked before an update, test the previously working Steam Play tool when it remains available. Record each change so you can return to the last known-good configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Single-player works but online play does not

Treat this as an anti-cheat or publisher-support issue until proven otherwise. Confirm the current policy for that title and mode. Do not disable security software or use unofficial workarounds that could violate the game’s rules or compromise the system.

An update broke a previously working setup

Identify which component changed: the game, launcher, Wine or Proton tool, graphics driver, Linux distribution or publisher-side service. Consult current title-specific reports, select a different available compatibility tool when Steam offers one, and keep backups of important application data before experimenting.

How often should you re-check compatibility?

Re-check whenever you change the application or game version, Linux distribution, graphics driver, Wine or Proton tool, launcher, or multiplayer policy. Compatibility information ages quickly because software updates can change dependencies and publisher settings. A report from an earlier release is evidence about that release, not a guarantee for the current one.

Bottom line

Linux can run a substantial range of Windows software, but it does so through title-specific compatibility rather than a universal Windows layer. Use Wine and its application reports for ordinary Windows programs; use Proton and Steam’s per-game settings for Steam games. Check hardware requirements, launchers and DRM, and verify anti-cheat and publisher support before committing to a multiplayer title. For Steam Deck and SteamOS, Valve’s Verified information adds a useful signal, while the exact game remains the final test.
