Yes. One public domain can serve applications from servers in both the United States and Europe. The domain does not have to point to one physical machine. Put a global routing layer in front of both servers—usually a managed layer-7 reverse proxy/CDN, or latency- and health-aware DNS—then configure HTTPS, health checks, routing policy, and a data strategy that matches your traffic and failover goals.

What the architecture looks like

Your users should connect to one hostname, such as www.example.com. That hostname resolves to a global service rather than directly exposing a single regional server. The service chooses a healthy US or European origin and proxies the request, or returns DNS information that causes the client to connect directly to one of those origins.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A typical request path is:

  1. A browser requests your domain.
  2. The global routing layer receives the request or answers the DNS query.
  3. The routing policy selects the US origin, the European origin, or a standby.
  4. The selected server processes the request and returns the response.

This arrangement lets you keep one brand, one certificate name, and one URL structure while placing compute closer to customers on both continents. It can also continue serving traffic when one region is unhealthy, provided the routing layer detects the failure and your application and data design support the transition.

Choose the routing layer first

Managed reverse proxy or CDN

A managed layer-7 reverse proxy or content delivery network is generally the easiest operational pattern. Azure Front Door, for example, is a cloud-based layer-7 load balancer that distributes traffic across regions and endpoints. Its origins can be in different zones, different regions, or outside its cloud as long as they are publicly reachable. A comparable AWS design places CloudFront in front of regional origins and uses a Route 53 alias for the public hostname. Cloudflare’s Anycast edge and Tunnel service can also direct a hostname to tunnel connectors, with multiple connector replicas on one tunnel identifier providing basic redundancy.

The edge service terminates TLS for your custom domain, receives the HTTP request, and opens a separate connection to the chosen origin. This gives you a single place to manage certificates, web application firewall rules, caching, redirects, compression, and path-based routing. You can send /api to one origin group and static assets to another, or maintain separate origin groups for different applications.

  • Best fit: HTTP or HTTPS applications that need centralized security and routing.
  • Strengths: application-layer decisions, edge caching, WAF integration, one certificate endpoint, and health-based origin selection.
  • Trade-offs: an additional service and bill, provider-specific configuration, and possible restrictions on non-HTTP protocols.

When using a proxy, configure the origin to accept the correct host name and preserve any headers your application uses. Decide whether the edge or the origin is responsible for redirects, authentication, and compression. Keep the origins reachable only from the proxy where practical, while allowing the provider’s health probes and required administrative access.

Latency- or geolocation-aware DNS

DNS routing is a simpler alternative. Create records for the same hostname that target the US and European endpoints, then apply a policy such as latency, geography, weighted distribution, or priority failover. Route 53 latency-based routing returns the endpoint associated with the lowest measured latency from the DNS query’s origin. With health checks enabled, if that lowest-latency record is unhealthy, the service returns the next-lowest-latency healthy endpoint.

DNS has an important behavioral difference: the client ultimately connects directly to the selected regional server. There is no HTTP proxy in the middle to terminate TLS, cache content, or apply a WAF policy. Each origin therefore needs its own certificate coverage, firewall rules, and capacity for direct traffic.

DNS answers are cached by recursive resolvers and often by client operating systems. Consequently, a changed answer cannot reach every user immediately. The practical failover interval depends on the record TTL, resolver behavior, health-check detection time, and how long clients retain cached answers. A low TTL can reduce the caching window but increases DNS query volume and does not guarantee instant failover.

  • Best fit: services that can expose regional endpoints directly and do not require edge HTTP features.
  • Strengths: straightforward architecture, direct client-to-origin connections, and support for non-HTTP protocols when the DNS policy is appropriate.
  • Trade-offs: slower and less predictable failover, origin exposure, no shared edge cache, and separate TLS and security configuration.

How the two approaches differ

Decision axis Global reverse proxy/CDN Latency or health-aware DNS
Connection path Client connects to a nearby edge; edge connects to the origin. Client connects directly to the DNS-selected origin.
Routing layer HTTP-aware layer 7, including host, path, header, and application health rules. DNS response based on latency, geography, weight, or priority.
Failover behavior Can stop sending new requests to an unhealthy origin after probe detection. Requires DNS health evaluation plus cache expiry; existing cached answers may persist.
TLS management One custom-domain certificate can terminate at the edge; origin encryption remains a separate choice. Each directly reachable origin must correctly serve the domain and certificate.
Caching and WAF Usually available at the edge, subject to the service and plan. Not provided by DNS itself; add separate services on each origin or in front of them.
Origin exposure Can be restricted to proxy networks, depending on provider capabilities. Regional addresses are normally exposed to clients.
Protocol support Primarily HTTP-based unless the service explicitly supports other protocols. DNS can direct many protocols, but the application must handle them on each origin.
Operational complexity Centralized policy, certificates, probes, and logs; provider-specific setup. Simpler routing records but more work at each origin and more uncertainty during cache-based failover.

Configure two regional servers under one domain

1. Prepare stable regional origins

Create the US and European servers with stable public IP addresses or hostnames. Do not build routing around an address that changes whenever a virtual machine is replaced. Keep the software version, environment variables, firewall policy, and required runtime dependencies aligned unless the regions intentionally run different releases.

Give each origin an internal identifier, such as us-east and eu-west, so logs and dashboards show which region handled a request. Synchronize clocks and include a request or trace identifier in application logs; otherwise, diagnosing a cross-region failure becomes unnecessarily difficult.

2. Select the public entry point

For a reverse-proxy design, create the frontend or distribution and add both regional servers as origins. For a DNS design, create the two records for the same hostname and attach the desired latency, geolocation, weighted, or failover policy. Keep the origin hostnames distinct even when the public hostname is identical.

Do not point the public record at only one region and assume the second server is automatically used. Redundancy exists only after both endpoints are registered in the routing policy and tested.

3. Bind the domain and certificates

Add the custom domain to the global service and issue or import a certificate covering the exact names users will request. Ensure that the forwarded Host header and server-name indication match the origin’s virtual-host configuration. If the origin also uses HTTPS, validate its certificate independently; a valid edge certificate does not make an invalid origin certificate safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For direct DNS routing, install a certificate on both regional servers and verify the complete chain from multiple networks. Test the bare domain, the www name, API subdomains, and any alternate names before switching production traffic.

4. Publish a meaningful health endpoint

Expose a lightweight HTTPS endpoint such as /health. A successful TCP connection or a process that returns HTTP 200 while the database is unavailable is not enough. The probe should represent the minimum readiness required to serve real requests: application process, required configuration, database connectivity, and any essential dependency.

Keep the endpoint fast and cheap. Azure guidance notes that HEAD probes can reduce origin load when the service supports them. Do not make a health check perform a destructive operation or a slow full transaction. Return a clear unhealthy status when the server should receive no new production traffic, and protect diagnostic details from unauthenticated callers.

5. Set the routing policy

  • Performance or latency: send a user toward the region expected to provide the lowest network delay.
  • Geography: keep users in a specified continent or country when residency or policy requires it. Geolocation is not the same as measured latency; a nearby user may still have a faster path to another region.
  • Weighted split: direct a percentage of traffic to each region for a controlled rollout or capacity distribution.
  • Priority failover: make one region primary and the other standby, sending traffic to the standby only when the primary fails.

Write down the intended policy. A rule that is described as “nearest server” may actually be DNS-query latency, user geolocation, or edge-to-origin latency, and those measurements can produce different results.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Active-active or active-passive?

Active-active

In active-active operation, both regions receive normal production traffic. This can reduce cross-Atlantic latency and use capacity efficiently, but it makes the data layer the central design problem. Concurrent writes can reach different databases, and local in-memory sessions can disappear when a user’s next request lands in the other region.

Use a data model that tolerates concurrent writes, partition writes deliberately, or provide a replication and conflict-resolution mechanism appropriate to the application. Store sessions in a shared, replicated system or use stateless signed tokens. Define how caches are invalidated across regions; an object purged in the US must not remain stale in Europe when correctness matters.

Active-active is a poor fit when the application has one authoritative writer and no safe replication method. Sending traffic to two servers does not make a single-writer database globally redundant.

Active-passive

In active-passive operation, one region serves production while the other remains ready as a standby. This simplifies writes, session ownership, and operational reasoning. The cost is unused or partially used capacity and a recovery transition when the primary fails.

Keep the standby synchronized, patched, and continuously tested. Define who promotes it, how database replication is made writable, how queued work is handled, and how traffic is switched back. A standby that has not served real traffic recently may fail for reasons that a basic health probe cannot detect.

Design the data, sessions, and background work

  • Database writes: choose one writer, partition by tenant or geography, or use a conflict-tolerant design. Do not assume replication automatically resolves simultaneous updates.
  • Read consistency: document whether a user can read a slightly older value after crossing regions. Strong cross-region consistency usually adds latency or service complexity.
  • Sessions: avoid process-local session memory. Use shared storage, replicated session state, or stateless tokens with safe expiration and revocation handling.
  • File uploads: store objects in replicated or globally accessible storage rather than on one server’s local disk.
  • Queues and scheduled jobs: ensure a job runs once, or make it idempotent so duplicate execution is harmless during a failover.
  • Secrets and configuration: distribute them through a controlled mechanism and rotate them consistently in both regions.

These choices determine whether a second server is genuine resilience or merely a second place where inconsistent state can be created.

Test failover before you need it

  1. Record baseline latency, error rates, origin response times, cache status, and database replication lag for users in North America and Europe.
  2. From multiple networks in each geography, confirm that the public hostname reaches both regions according to policy.
  3. Make the US health endpoint fail while the application process remains reachable. Verify that traffic moves to Europe, and then restore it.
  4. Repeat the test with the European origin unavailable.
  5. For DNS routing, measure how long resolvers and clients continue using the old answer. Compare the observed delay with the configured TTL and provider detection interval.
  6. Test partial failures: a full disk, unavailable database, expired origin certificate, saturated connection pool, and a broken dependency should produce an unhealthy result when the application cannot serve correctly.
  7. Verify that writes, sessions, queued jobs, uploads, and cache invalidations behave correctly after a user’s requests cross regions.
  8. Document the rollback and manual override procedure, including who can change routing and how the change is audited.

Health monitoring must use more than one vantage point. Cloudflare Health Checks documentation describes selecting one to thirteen regions, with three data centers running checks in each selected region (Cloudflare, 2026). A check from only one monitoring location can miss a regional network problem or incorrectly declare an origin healthy for users elsewhere.

Monitor the edge and the origins

Track edge request volume, cache hit ratio, TLS and certificate status, routing decisions, and 4xx/5xx rates. At each origin, monitor CPU, memory, connection pools, dependency latency, database replication lag, disk capacity, and health-probe results. Alert on changes in the relationship between edge errors and origin errors: a rise in edge 5xx responses with healthy origins may indicate a routing or certificate problem, while origin 5xx responses usually require application investigation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep DNS changes, certificate renewals, firewall updates, and routing-policy edits under change control. A global routing layer can hide an origin problem until the second region is asked to absorb all traffic, so capacity alerts should account for that failure mode rather than only normal regional load.

Common failure modes and fixes

Both regions receive traffic, but users still get errors

Check that both origins use the same application configuration, database schema, secrets, and required external dependencies. Compare request IDs and origin-region labels in logs. If only one region fails, remove it through the routing policy while repairing the underlying dependency.

Failover appears not to work

Confirm that the health probe checks application readiness rather than an open port, and verify the probe’s expected status code, path, protocol, and host header. With DNS, allow for resolver and client caching; a healthy policy change cannot instantly replace answers already cached elsewhere.

Users are repeatedly logged out

The application is probably storing sessions only in one server’s memory or local disk. Move session state to shared replicated storage or use a stateless session design, then test expiration and logout behavior in both regions.

Data differs between continents

Inspect replication lag, write routing, conflict handling, and cache invalidation. Decide which values require strong consistency and which can tolerate eventual consistency. If the application cannot safely reconcile concurrent writes, use active-passive or enforce a single writer.

HTTPS works in one region but not the other

Check certificate names, complete certificate chains, SNI, origin bindings, and the forwarded host header. A certificate installed only at the edge does not correct a misconfigured origin when the edge-to-origin connection uses HTTPS.

What this setup costs and what it cannot guarantee

The architecture adds a global routing service, two regional compute environments, monitoring, health checks, and—often—replicated storage or databases. Reverse-proxy/CDN pricing depends on requests, bandwidth, cached data, security features, and origin traffic. DNS routing adds provider query and health-check charges and leaves more security work on the origins. Exact cost and failover time cannot be determined without your traffic volume, provider, protocol mix, data topology, and recovery objectives.

No routing service guarantees that every existing connection moves during a failure. In-flight requests can fail, long-lived connections may need reconnecting, and clients with cached DNS answers may continue using an unavailable address. Design retries with backoff, make write operations idempotent where possible, and communicate partial failure behavior to the application team.

Recommended decision path

  1. Choose a managed reverse proxy/CDN when the application is HTTP-based and you want centralized TLS, WAF, caching, and application-aware health routing.
  2. Choose latency- or geolocation-aware DNS when direct origin connections are acceptable, protocols extend beyond HTTP, and you can tolerate DNS-cache-dependent failover.
  3. Use active-active only after sessions, writes, replication, queues, and cache invalidation are explicitly designed for concurrent regional traffic.
  4. Use active-passive when one writer is safest and simpler recovery is more valuable than using both regions continuously.
  5. Validate the design with failure tests from North America and Europe before treating the second server as a disaster-recovery measure.

The domain name is the easy part. Reliable two-continent service comes from the routing policy, application-ready health checks, and a data model that remains correct when requests move between regions.
