Yes. You can run independent WordPress installations at paths such as https://example.com/site1 and https://example.com/site2 on the same domain and server. Each installation needs its own WordPress files, configuration, database arrangement, and correctly scoped rewrite rules. WordPress Multisite can also use those URL paths, but it is a different architecture: one WordPress core serves virtual sites rather than separate codebases in physical folders.
What “multiple WordPress installs in subfolders” actually means
The phrase can describe two different designs. In the first, you place complete, independent WordPress copies in physical directories. For example, /site1 contains one installation and /site2 contains another. Each copy has its own wp-config.php, plugins, themes, uploads, updates and database settings.

The URLs may look identical—/site1 and /site2—but those paths are virtual sites inside one WordPress installation. They do not correspond to separate WordPress code directories. The network shares one core and database while keeping site-specific tables and upload locations.
That distinction determines how you update, secure, back up, migrate and troubleshoot the sites. “Subfolder” describes the URL shape; it does not by itself identify the underlying architecture.

Option 1: independent WordPress installations in physical subfolders
How the layout works
Create a directory for every site below the web root, such as:
/site1/for the first WordPress copy/site2/for the second WordPress copy
Upload a complete WordPress distribution into each directory. During setup, open the installer through that directory’s URL, for example https://example.com/site1/wp-admin/install.php. The second installation uses the equivalent path under /site2.

You can give each site a separate database, which provides the clearest isolation, or place both in one database if every installation uses a unique table prefix. WordPress documents both arrangements. With a shared database, never reuse the same $table_prefix; assign a different value to every installation so that tables cannot collide.
Installation procedure
- Create the target directory for the first site and place the WordPress files inside it.
- Create a database and database user, or decide which existing database will be shared.
- Copy the sample configuration to
wp-config.phpin that directory and enter the database name, username, password and server details. - If the database is shared, set a unique
$table_prefix, such assite1_. Give the second installation a different prefix, such assite2_. - Run the installer at the subfolder URL and complete the site title, administrator account and permalink choices.
- Repeat the process for every additional directory, using that installation’s credentials and prefix.
The installations remain operationally independent. You can update the core, select a theme, install a plugin or change PHP-related settings for one site without automatically changing the others. That independence is useful when sites have different owners, security requirements, release schedules or plugin stacks.

What the server must do
The web server must allow the request to reach the child directory before any root-level catch-all rule sends it to the main site. Apache needs an appropriate .htaccess file in each installation, while Nginx and other servers require equivalent location and front-controller configuration. A parent configuration that redirects every unknown path to the root WordPress installation can prevent the child site from ever receiving the request.
Keep the scope of each rewrite rule tied to its directory. A rule intended for the root site must not rewrite /site1/... requests before the /site1 rules are evaluated. Back up wp-config.php and the relevant .htaccess files before changing rewrite settings.

What Multisite provides
A Multisite network is “a collection of sites that all share the same WordPress installation core files,” according to WordPress.org Developer Resources. The network has one core codebase and one database. Each site receives its own database tables and upload path, but the administrator manages the collection from a network dashboard.
In subdirectory mode, a site can be available at https://example.com/site1 or https://example.com/site2. Those are path-based virtual sites. WordPress explicitly notes that a sub-directory install creates a path-based network even though it does not use file-system directories for each site.

Requirements and setup sequence
- Confirm that the existing single-site installation uses pretty permalinks rather than a plain query-string URL structure.
- Back up the database and all WordPress files, especially
wp-config.phpand.htaccess. - Enable the network feature by defining
WP_ALLOW_MULTISITEinwp-config.php. - Open the network setup screen in the WordPress dashboard and choose the subdirectory option when it is available.
- Record the generated settings. WordPress supplies additional constants and rewrite rules that must be applied to
wp-config.phpand.htaccess. - Log out and back in if prompted, then use the Network Admin area to create the additional sites.
The official Apache example includes handling for /wp-admin, existing files and directories, WordPress PHP paths and the final front-controller rewrite. If your server is not Apache, translate the same routing logic into that server’s configuration rather than copying Apache syntax unchanged.
Important subdirectory limitations
WordPress may prevent an existing installation that has been running for more than one month from selecting the subdirectory network option. The documented reason is potential conflict with existing permalink paths. This restriction is about converting an established site, not about whether a newly planned network can use subdirectory URLs.

The main site in a subdirectory network normally uses a /blog/ post path. That behavior can affect permalink planning, especially when you want a top-level page or another site to occupy a similar path. Check the generated network instructions and your intended URL structure before enabling the network.
Independent installs versus Multisite

Separate installations maximize autonomy. Multisite reduces duplicated core administration. Neither option is universally better: the right choice depends on whether isolation or centralization is the primary requirement.

Why a subfolder site redirects to the main site
The parent rewrite rule captures the request
This is the most common architectural failure. The root installation has a broad front-controller rule that handles every path it does not recognize. If that rule runs before the child directory’s rules, a request for /site1 is passed to the main site. Inspect the parent server configuration and make sure requests are allowed to enter the child directory before the root catch-all is applied.
The child installation lacks usable rewrite rules
Each independent installation needs rules appropriate to its own directory. For Multisite, apply the exact rules generated by the Network Setup screen. An incomplete or misplaced .htaccess file can send front-end and administration requests to the wrong installation or produce 404 responses.

Apache directives cannot simply be pasted into an Nginx configuration. Use the equivalent location and PHP routing rules for the server software you actually run. If a hosting control panel manages the web server, make changes through its supported configuration mechanism and verify which virtual host serves the domain.
Diagnostic sequence
- Request a known child path, such as
/site1/wp-admin/, and note whether it redirects, returns a 404 or displays the root site. - Confirm that the child directory physically contains its own WordPress files and configuration.
- Temporarily review the root and child rewrite files, looking for a root catch-all that runs before the child rules.
- For Multisite, revisit Network Admin’s generated instructions and restore the complete rules for the current server.
- Test a static file inside the child directory. If that file also resolves through the root site, the problem is server routing rather than a WordPress plugin.
How administration changes between the two models
Separate installations
Every site has its own dashboard and update queue. You can install incompatible plugin versions on different sites, use different themes and schedule upgrades independently. The cost is repetition: updates, vulnerability checks, database backups and recovery procedures must be performed for each installation.

Multisite
Network administration centralizes core infrastructure, but it changes permissions. Network administrators install themes for the network; individual sites can use only themes that have been made available to them. Plugins can be activated for one site or across the network, depending on the plugin and the administrator’s choice. Some plugins do not support Multisite, so confirm compatibility before migrating an existing site or standardizing the network on a particular extension.
Centralization also means a faulty network-wide update can affect multiple sites at once. Test changes on a staging network or a disposable site when the consequences of failure are significant.
Backups, migration and security planning
- Back up files and databases separately. For independent installs, label every archive with its directory and database or table prefix. For Multisite, ensure the backup captures the shared core, all network tables and every site’s uploads.
- Document ownership and access. Record which administrator controls each site and who can use Network Admin. Do not grant network-level access when site-level access is sufficient.
- Plan restoration tests. A backup is useful only if you can restore the correct site without overwriting another site’s files or tables.
- Keep rewrite configuration under change control. Save the working root and child configurations before modifying them, particularly when enabling a network.
- Separate failure domains when necessary. If one site must remain available during another site’s maintenance or compromise, independent installations and separate databases provide a clearer boundary than a shared Multisite core.
Which approach should you choose?
Choose separate installs when independence matters
- The sites have different owners or administrators.
- They require different plugin and theme combinations.
- You need to upgrade, secure or migrate each site on its own schedule.
- A site must be isolated from failures or configuration changes elsewhere.
- You control the server well enough to configure child-directory rewrites correctly.
Choose Multisite when centralized control matters
- One team manages all sites and benefits from a shared dashboard.
- The sites can use a compatible, centrally maintained set of themes and plugins.
- You want one WordPress core and database arrangement rather than repeated installations.
- You accept network-wide maintenance and the additional complexity of moving a site out of the network later.
A practical decision checklist
- Decide whether each site needs independent code, plugin versions and administrators.
- Choose separate databases for the strongest separation; if sharing one database, assign unique table prefixes.
- For Multisite, verify that every required plugin supports network operation and that themes can be managed centrally.
- Map the URL plan before installation, including the main site’s post path and any reserved subfolders.
- Confirm how your web server evaluates parent and child rewrite rules.
- Take and test a complete backup before converting an existing site to a network.
- Document the recovery procedure for each site or for the network as a whole.
The bottom line
Multiple WordPress sites can run under one domain in subfolder URLs. Use independent physical installations when isolation and freedom to customize are more important than centralized administration. Use a subdirectory Multisite network when one team can share a core, database and compatible plugin/theme environment. The URL alone does not reveal which model you have; files, database structure, permissions and rewrite rules do.
