Yes. You can install several Linux desktop environments on the same operating-system installation and choose which one to use at the login screen. The display manager lists the installed sessions; selecting GNOME, KDE Plasma, Xfce, Cinnamon, MATE, LXQt, or another available session starts that desktop for the next login.
This is coexistence, not simultaneous use of every desktop shell. The environments share the same kernel, users, files, applications, and hardware. Their packages remain installed, but normally one graphical desktop session is active at a time. Debian documents this package-and-session workflow, and Fedora publishes separate desktop variants and Spins that can be installed on Fedora systems.
What “multiple desktops on one installation” means
A Linux desktop environment is a coordinated set of packages: a graphical shell, window manager or compositor, panels, settings tools, default applications, themes, and supporting services. Installing a second environment adds those packages to the existing system; it does not create a second operating-system installation.
After installation, the display manager—the graphical login program—discovers the session files provided by the desktop packages. At the login screen, a session or gear menu lets you choose the environment to launch. Debian’s documentation describes the important distinction: installing a desktop makes it available, but you still must select or configure the user session before you can run it.

Your home directory, documents, installed command-line tools, network connections, and hardware drivers remain shared. Each environment may add its own settings database, themes, default applications, and background services. Those shared and per-desktop components are why switching works easily but can require cleanup when several environments are mixed.
How to switch desktops at login
- Install the additional desktop packages. Use the package or meta-package supplied by your distribution. A complete environment normally pulls in its shell, session files, settings utilities, and dependencies.
- Log out or reboot to the graphical login screen. The new session may not appear until the display manager starts again.
- Open the session selector. Depending on the display manager and theme, this is a gear icon, a desktop-name button, or a menu near the user name.
- Choose the environment. Select the installed GNOME, Plasma, Xfce, Cinnamon, MATE, LXDE, LXQt, Sway, Budgie, or other session you want to test.
- Sign in. The selected session runs for that login. Most display managers remember the last choice or offer a way to make it the default for future logins.
- Switch again when needed. Log out, return to the display manager, and select a different session. You do not need to reinstall anything.
The selector may show more than one entry for a desktop—for example, separate Wayland and X11 sessions, or a fallback session. Read the session name before signing in, especially when troubleshooting graphics or compatibility.
Which environments can share a Debian installation?
Debian’s installer lets you select a desktop task and, where available, individual desktop choices. Its documented choices include:

You can also add another environment after the initial installation by installing its package or meta-package. For example, a system installed with GNOME can later gain Plasma or Xfce, while an Xfce installation can gain another listed desktop. The exact package name depends on the Debian release and repository configuration, so check the package description for the environment you intend to add rather than guessing a name.
Debian’s installer documentation includes an explicit warning: some combinations of desktop may not be co-installable. If the installer refuses a combination or proposes conflicting packages, do not force removal of core components. Choose a compatible session or use a separate test installation instead.
Which environments are available in Fedora?
Fedora Workstation uses GNOME as its primary desktop. Fedora also publishes official variants and Spins for other environments, including KDE Plasma, Xfce, Cinnamon, MATE, LXQt, Sway, and Budgie, along with additional community-supported choices.

A Fedora Spin is a prepared Fedora edition centered on a particular desktop or window manager. Installing one of those desktops on an existing Fedora system follows the same general model: packages provide a session, and the display manager offers that session at login. The exact availability and integration can vary by Fedora release, so use the repositories and edition documentation for the release you run.

They are distribution profiles. You can keep a GNOME-based Workstation installation and add another supported session, provided the package dependencies for your release can be resolved.
What to evaluate before adding a second desktop
Package footprint and duplicate applications
Every additional environment consumes disk space because its packages stay installed even when another session is active. You may also receive duplicate utilities: multiple file managers, text editors, image viewers, terminal emulators, settings panels, software centers, and archive tools. The system can ask which application should open a file, or one environment’s defaults can become visible in another.
Decide whether you need the full environment or only a specific application. Installing a complete desktop is convenient for testing, but it adds more packages and more defaults than installing a single program.
Hardware and resource demands
Desktop environments differ in how much graphical and background infrastructure they use. A lighter environment may be preferable on older or resource-constrained hardware, while a feature-rich environment may provide effects and integrated services that require more graphics and memory headroom. No universal performance numbers apply, so treat hardware suitability as a system-specific test rather than a fixed ranking.

Desktop packages can expose different session types. A display manager may list a Wayland session, an X11 session, or both. Hardware, drivers, screen-sharing tools, remote-access software, and older applications can behave differently between them. If one entry gives you a blank screen or broken input, return to the login screen and try the other session before changing packages.

Default applications and settings
When several environments are installed, each may register file associations, MIME handlers, themes, notification services, and a preferred terminal or editor. Changing a default in one environment can affect what another environment launches. Keep a note of the original defaults if you are evaluating a new desktop and want an easy way back.
Distribution integration
An environment packaged and tested by your distribution generally integrates more cleanly than one assembled from unrelated third-party packages. Fedora’s official variants and Spins and Debian’s installer choices are useful signals that the distribution has defined package relationships for those desktops. Integration is still release-specific; a session that works well on one release may need adjustments after an upgrade.
A cautious installation workflow
1. Record the working state
Before changing the system, note which desktop, display manager, login session type, and default applications currently work. Confirm that you have a current backup of personal files. This gives you a reference if a new package changes a default or if you need to undo the experiment.

Use the desktop package or meta-package associated with your Debian or Fedora release. Read the package summary and dependency list. If the package manager proposes removing your existing desktop, stop and review the transaction; the goal is to add a session, not accidentally remove the one you rely on.
3. Let dependency configuration finish
Desktop packages can install a display manager, authentication components, themes, services, and shared libraries. Allow the package manager to complete its configuration. If it asks which display manager should handle graphical logins, keep the one already working unless you have a specific reason to change it. A display manager is separate from the desktop itself, and changing it can alter the login screen and session discovery.
4. Restart the graphical login
Log out and back in, or reboot if the new session does not appear. At the login screen, open the session menu and choose the new environment. The first login can take longer while per-user configuration files and caches are created.

5. Test the essentials
- Confirm that the display resolution, keyboard layout, touchpad or mouse, audio, networking, and suspend behavior work.
- Open your normal documents and verify that file associations launch the applications you expect.
- Check external monitors, screen sharing, accessibility tools, and hardware-specific controls you use regularly.
- Log out and select the original desktop to verify that it still starts normally.
6. Decide which session should be the default
Use the display manager’s session selector to choose a default, if it offers that option. A default affects the next ordinary login; it does not uninstall other sessions. Leave the selector available so another user can choose a different desktop without changing the system-wide package set.

Common problems and practical fixes
The new desktop is missing from the login menu
First log out or reboot so the display manager reloads session files. Confirm that the desktop’s session package finished installing and that you are looking at the correct session selector rather than a power or accessibility menu. If the entry still does not appear, the package set may not provide a graphical session for your display manager or release; review the distribution package description instead of creating a session file by hand.
The login returns to the sign-in screen
Choose the original working session and sign in. Then try the alternate session type if both Wayland and X11 entries exist. A failing session can indicate a graphics-driver, compositor, permissions, or per-user-configuration problem. Testing with a fresh user account helps separate a system package issue from settings in your existing home directory.
Applications or file associations changed
Installing a desktop can register its own defaults. Reset the preferred application in the desktop’s settings panel, or select the desired program from the file’s “Open with” chooser. This change is usually a configuration decision, not evidence that the original desktop was removed.
The package manager wants to remove the original desktop
Stop and inspect the proposed transaction. Some combinations are not co-installable, and removing a desktop meta-package can also remove dependencies that other sessions use. Keep the original desktop’s core packages until the replacement has been tested and you have a recovery plan.
The system has too many duplicate services
Duplicate panels, notification agents, portals, and background helpers can appear when a session starts programs from another environment. Disable only a service you can identify and do so from the desktop’s startup settings or package documentation. Removing shared libraries blindly can break more than one session.

Removing a desktop without breaking the installation
When you are finished testing, remove the environment through your distribution’s package manager, using the same package or meta-package you added. Review the removal list carefully. Meta-packages often depend on many components, and a removal operation can propose deleting shared libraries, login components, or applications that another desktop still needs.
Do not remove the only working desktop before confirming that another session starts, networking works, and you can reach a terminal or recovery environment. If you want to keep the option of returning, leave the original desktop’s core packages installed and remove only clearly unused applications, themes, or extras.
Can several people use different desktops?
Yes. The session choice is made at login, so different users can select different installed environments. One user can keep GNOME as a default while another chooses Plasma or Xfce. Their home-directory settings remain separate, although system-wide packages, services, fonts, drivers, and default handlers are shared.

For ordinary use, assume that the selected session is the one you are actively operating and test one desktop at a time when diagnosing a problem.
When a second installation is the better choice
Coexistence is convenient when you want to compare desktops without repartitioning or reinstalling. A separate installation is safer when the package manager reports an unresolvable conflict, when you need fundamentally different system-wide defaults, or when you want a clean benchmark without services and configuration from another environment. A virtual machine or spare disk can also isolate experiments, but it introduces its own hardware and performance trade-offs.
For most users, adding one distribution-supported desktop, testing it from the login menu, and keeping the original session until the new one is proven provides the lowest-risk path. The environments can share one Linux installation, but they remain separate package collections with shared system foundations and potentially competing defaults.
