No. ChromeOS Flex is not supported on Apple Silicon Macs. Google requires an Intel or AMD x86-64-compatible processor, while Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4 and later) uses ARM architecture. Google’s known-issues guidance specifically lists Macs with an M1 processor as unsupported and likely to have major bugs even if they appear to work.

You may find reports of experimental boots, but a boot attempt is not the same as a supported installation. The practical choices are to keep macOS, install ChromeOS Flex on a compatible x86-64 computer, or use a separate Chromebook if your goal is the ChromeOS experience.

The short answer: Apple Silicon is outside ChromeOS Flex’s supported architecture

ChromeOS Flex is built for conventional PC hardware using the x86-64 instruction set. Google’s installation-preparation requirements specify an Intel or AMD x86-64-compatible device. Apple Silicon Macs use Apple-designed ARM processors, so they do not meet that minimum architecture requirement.

This is a processor-architecture mismatch, not a missing driver or an incorrectly prepared USB stick. Changing the startup disk, disabling a security setting, or recreating the installer cannot turn an ARM computer into an x86-64 computer. A workaround that happens to start some code would still be outside Google’s supported configuration.

Google’s explicit ARM and M1 warning

Google’s ChromeOS Flex Help “Known issues” page states: "Only x86_64 architecture devices can run ChromeOS Flex. 32-bit x86 and ARM devices are not supported." The same page says that Mac devices with a Touch Bar, T2 security chip, or M1 processor are unsupported and likely to have major bugs even if they work.

That wording matters. “Unsupported” means Google does not promise a functioning installation, updates, hardware compatibility, stability, or assistance. “Likely to have major bugs even if they work” also rules out treating a successful one-time boot as a dependable daily system.

Why an Intel Mac comparison can be misleading

Google has certified some older Intel-based Macs, but those entries do not establish compatibility with Apple Silicon. Certification applies to an exact model identifier and its tested hardware, not to every Mac carrying a similar name. A MacBook Pro from the Intel era and a MacBook Pro with an M-series chip are fundamentally different platforms for this purpose.

What the 2026 certified-model list shows

Google’s certified-model list was last updated September 2, 2026. It contains older Mac entries, including the models below. The certification end year is a time limit for that specific model, not a promise that newer Macs in the same product family will work.

Mac model identifier Certification information shown by Google What it means for Apple Silicon owners
Mac Mini 7,1 Certification ending in 2026 This is an older Intel-era model; it is not an M-series Mac.
MacBook Air 6,1 Certification ending in 2026 Its listing applies only to that Intel-era model identifier.
MacBook Air 7,2 Certification ending in 2027 The later end date does not extend to Apple Silicon MacBook Air models.
MacBook Pro 11,2 Listed among entries with certification ending in 2025 A past listing is not current support and does not imply M-series compatibility.
MacBook Pro 9,2 Listed among entries with certification ending in 2025 This older model’s history says nothing about an Apple Silicon Mac.

Google says expired models are no longer included in ongoing testing or eligible for Google support, and future updates are not guaranteed. Therefore, even an Intel Mac that once appeared on the list needs a current-status check before you rely on it.

Certified, non-certified and unsupported are different situations

Certified model

A certified model is one Google has tested and for which it guarantees functionality within the terms of its ChromeOS Flex guidance. Certification is tied to the exact model, not just the manufacturer, screen size or marketing name. Check the model number printed in macOS System Information against the live certified-model list.

Non-certified x86-64 model

A computer can satisfy the x86-64 requirement and still be outside the certified list. Google says performance, functionality and stability are not guaranteed on non-certified devices. Such a computer may be useful for an experiment, but you should expect missing drivers, unreliable sleep or networking, graphics problems, or an update that exposes a new issue.

Apple Silicon Mac

An Apple Silicon Mac falls into the more fundamental ARM restriction. It is not merely an untested x86-64 device. Google’s known-issues page names ARM devices as unsupported and calls out M1 Macs specifically. Experimental reports therefore cannot be treated as a supported installation path.

Minimum hardware requirements for a legitimate ChromeOS Flex target

If you are considering an older Intel Mac or another computer, verify every requirement before creating installation media:

  • Processor: Intel or AMD x86-64 architecture. ARM and 32-bit x86 devices are not supported.
  • Memory: at least 4 GB of RAM.
  • Internal storage: at least 16 GB.
  • Startup method: the computer must be able to boot from USB.
  • Firmware access: administrator access to BIOS or equivalent firmware controls may be required where applicable.
  • Installation media: an 8 GB or larger USB drive.

The computer used to create the USB installer can be different from the computer on which you intend to run Flex. That separation is useful if your target machine is an older Intel PC. It does not bypass the ARM requirement on an Apple Silicon Mac.

A practical compatibility check for an Intel Mac or PC

  1. Identify the exact model. In macOS, open Apple menu → About This Mac → System Report and record the model identifier. On a PC, record the manufacturer’s full model designation rather than only the product family.
  2. Confirm the processor architecture. The target must use Intel or AMD x86-64. If the Mac reports an Apple M-series chip, stop: it does not satisfy Google’s architecture requirement.
  3. Check the live certified-model list. Search for the exact model identifier, then note whether certification is active and its stated end date. Do not infer support from a similar model number.
  4. Check the physical minimums. Confirm at least 4 GB RAM, 16 GB internal storage and USB-boot capability. Meeting these numbers does not guarantee a non-certified device will work, but missing one is a clear disqualifier.
  5. Prepare suitable media. Use an 8 GB-or-larger USB drive with Google’s official installation-preparation process. The drive is only a delivery method for the software; it cannot change the target’s CPU architecture.
  6. Decide whether the risk is acceptable. On a non-certified computer, plan for possible hardware or stability problems and keep a recovery path for the original operating system and data.

What happens if you try anyway on an M-series Mac?

The installer may not start

Because Apple Silicon uses ARM and ChromeOS Flex targets x86-64, the firmware or installer may refuse to boot, stop at a blank screen, or fail before installation. A different USB image or repeated formatting does not address that architectural mismatch.

A partial or one-time boot proves very little

If an experimental method reaches a desktop, that result does not make the Mac supported. Google’s warning anticipates major bugs even when an M1 device appears to work. Components such as graphics, Wi-Fi, audio, sleep, trackpad input, external displays and power management can remain unreliable, and updates can break an unofficial setup.

Support and update guarantees do not apply

Google guarantees functionality only for certified models. For non-certified hardware it does not guarantee performance, functionality or stability; an Apple Silicon Mac is also explicitly outside the supported ARM architecture. You should not depend on such a setup for work, school, recovery access or long-term security updates.

Common questions about ChromeOS Flex on Apple Silicon

Does ChromeOS Flex work on an M1 Mac?

Google lists M1 Macs as unsupported and says they are likely to have major bugs even if they work. An M1 Mac therefore does not meet the supported target requirements.

Can a MacBook with an M2, M3 or newer chip run Flex?

Those processors are also Apple Silicon and use ARM architecture. Google’s x86-64-only requirement applies, so newer M-series MacBooks are not supported either.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will an 8 GB or 16 GB USB drive fix the incompatibility?

No. Google requires an 8 GB-or-larger USB drive for installation media, but the drive only stores and transfers the installer. It cannot make an ARM Mac satisfy the x86-64 requirement.

Why do some older Macs appear on Google’s list?

The listed machines are specific older Intel-era models. Certification is model-specific and time-limited; it should not be generalized to Apple Silicon Macs that share a MacBook or Mac mini name.

Realistic alternatives

Keep macOS on the Apple Silicon Mac

If you need the Mac’s normal hardware support, battery behavior and Apple software integration, retaining macOS is the dependable option. You can still use Chrome and web applications without replacing the operating system.

Use ChromeOS Flex on a compatible x86-64 computer

An Intel or AMD computer that meets the RAM, storage and USB-boot requirements gives you a legitimate place to test Flex. Prefer a model currently certified by Google, and check its certification end date before installing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a separate Chromebook

If your actual goal is to use ChromeOS rather than repurpose a Mac, a Chromebook is a separate device category designed for that operating system. It does not install ChromeOS Flex on your Apple Silicon Mac, but it avoids the architecture and certification problems described above.
