Running a modpack with friends? Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks (CurseForge, FTB, Technic) and free DDoS protection.
Yes—if you use a Raspberry Pi 5 with a 64-bit operating system, the Java version required by your Minecraft release, active cooling, and a modest player count. Fabric and NeoForge have documented headless-server workflows, and community configurations show Pi 5 boards running recent modded versions. The practical limit is the modpack and workload, not simply whether the server starts.
Treat the Pi as a small-group server that needs tuning. A lightly modded world for you and a few friends can be realistic; a large automation pack, heavy world generation, or many concurrent players is a better fit for a faster mini PC or managed host.

What a Raspberry Pi 5 can realistically handle
A Pi 5 can run the Java Edition server process and load mods, but Minecraft’s main simulation tick is sensitive to single-thread CPU performance. Every entity, redstone update, chunk operation, and mod task competes for that tick. The result is a server that may feel fine in a quiet base and then fall behind when several players explore new terrain simultaneously.
There is no reliable universal player limit. The outcome changes with:

- the number and type of mods, especially automation, machines, mobs, and map systems;
- world-generation activity when players move into unexplored chunks;
- simulation and view-distance settings;
- available memory after the operating system and other services are accounted for;
- storage latency, backup activity, and thermal throttling; and
- the number of players acting at once.
For that reason, test the exact pack in a disposable world before promising access to friends. A Pi 5 is a sensible small-group platform, not a guaranteed replacement for a desktop or a commercial server.
Recommended Raspberry Pi hardware
For a new build, start with an 8GB Raspberry Pi 5, active cooling, a dependable USB-C power supply, and a microSD card of at least 32GB. Raspberry Pi’s setup guidance lists Pi 5 configurations of 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, and 16GB; the 8GB model leaves useful headroom without making memory allocation the only design concern.

| Component | Practical requirement | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Board | Raspberry Pi 5; 8GB is the recommended starting point | Provides the strongest Pi-class CPU option in the documented setup and enough memory for a small modded server plus the operating system. |
| Operating system | 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS image | Modern Minecraft requires a 64-bit JVM; a 32-bit userspace cannot satisfy that requirement. |
| Storage | At least 32GB microSD card | Holds the operating system, server files, mods, logs, and world data. |
| Cooling | Active cooling, such as an official Pi 5 fan option | Sustained server loads can heat the board; active cooling helps preserve performance over long sessions. |
| Power | Suitable USB-C power supply | Insufficient or unstable power can cause crashes and filesystem damage. |
| Optional storage | USB 3 or NVMe SSD | Can make world and backup management more convenient. The available evidence does not establish a fixed Minecraft performance multiplier. |
Why active cooling is not optional for serious use
A server may run for hours or days, unlike a short desktop test. Raspberry Pi hardware documentation recommends active cooling for best Pi 5 performance and lists official fan choices. Install the cooler before testing the pack so your results represent sustained operation rather than a brief, cool start.
MicroSD versus SSD
A 32GB microSD card meets the documented minimum, but world saves, logs, backups, and multiple test instances consume space quickly. A USB 3 or NVMe SSD is a sensible upgrade when you expect frequent backups or several worlds. Do not assume that moving the files to an SSD guarantees a particular tick-rate improvement; the supplied configurations do not provide a controlled multiplier.
Use a 64-bit operating system and the matching Java version
Install a 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS image and verify that the Java runtime is also 64-bit. NeoForge’s user guide is explicit: Minecraft does not support 32-bit JVMs. Installing a 32-bit OS or JVM can stop the server before the mod loader starts, regardless of the Pi’s physical RAM.

| Minecraft release | Java version documented by Fabric and NeoForge guidance |
|---|---|
| 1.17 through 1.20.4 | Java 17 |
| 1.20.5 and newer | Java 21 |
Match the Java version to the Minecraft version, not merely to the loader name. A pack that targets 1.20.1 may require Java 17, while a 1.21.x pack requires Java 21 under the cited guidance. Check the loader’s startup output after installation; it should report the expected major Java version.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose the mod loader your pack actually requires
Fabric
Fabric provides an executable server launcher and a documented headless command:
java -Xmx2G -jar <launcher> nogui
Replace <launcher> with the executable launcher filename. Most Fabric mods also require Fabric API, so copy the API version that matches both your Minecraft release and Fabric environment into the server’s mods directory.
NeoForge
NeoForge has a documented server workflow and is used by current Pi 5 community configurations. Its requirements still include a 64-bit JVM and the Java version appropriate to the Minecraft release. Install the NeoForge server files for the exact version named by the modpack, then use the generated launch files or command shown by that installer.
Forge-targeted packs
Do not mix loaders casually. Fabric mods are not automatically compatible with Forge or NeoForge, and a pack’s loader is part of its identity. The documented Pi 5 workflows available here are Fabric and NeoForge. If a pack specifically targets traditional Forge, verify that pack’s loader and Java requirements on a test installation before committing the Pi as its permanent host.

Step-by-step setup for a small server
- Prepare the hardware. Fit active cooling, connect the Pi to a suitable USB-C supply, and use Ethernet if possible. Insert a 32GB-or-larger microSD card, or attach the SSD you plan to use for server data.
- Install 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS. Choose the 64-bit image, complete updates, and confirm you are not running a 32-bit userspace.
- Install the required Java release. Use Java 17 for Minecraft 1.17–1.20.4 or Java 21 for 1.20.5 and newer, as specified by the Fabric and NeoForge guidance.
- Create a dedicated server directory. Keep the server jar, loader files,
mods, config, world, and logs together so they can be backed up and restored as one unit. - Install one loader. Follow the Fabric or NeoForge server installer for the exact Minecraft version. Do not copy mods from a different Minecraft version or loader.
- Accept the EULA. Start the server once, read the generated EULA file, and set its acceptance value as required before starting again.
- Add the pack’s dependencies. For Fabric, include Fabric API when the mods require it. Keep every mod at the same Minecraft and loader version as the server.
- Start headless. For a Fabric launcher, the documented form is
java -Xmx2G -jar <launcher> nogui. Adjust the memory flag only after checking the board’s available RAM and the pack’s behavior. - Generate a controlled test world. Join locally, travel through representative terrain, use the pack’s machines or progression systems, and watch the server log and tick behavior before inviting others.
- Automate operations. Add scheduled backups and a restart monitor before exposing the server to friends. Test that a backup can actually be restored.
Memory allocation: start conservatively
Giving Java every megabyte is not a performance strategy. Raspberry Pi OS, networking, backups, and monitoring need memory too. A current Pi 5 Fabric repository documents an 8GB board with a 2GB minimum and 5GB maximum allocation. That is one working configuration, not a universal rule for every pack.
Start below the board’s physical capacity, observe garbage-collection pauses and operating-system pressure, then increase the heap only when the pack demonstrably needs it. If the kernel begins swapping, the server can become less responsive even though the Java heap appears large. Conversely, an undersized heap may produce repeated collection pauses or out-of-memory errors. Change one setting at a time and record the result.
Performance tuning that affects playability
Control exploration and simulation load
New-chunk generation is often the hardest moment for a small server. Pre-generate a limited area during a maintenance window if your tooling supports it, but do so cautiously: generating a huge radius can consume storage and time before anyone plays. Keep simulation distance appropriate to the number of active players and the pack’s entity load.
Measure tick health, not just CPU percentage
Look for rising tick times, delayed block updates, rubber-banding, and warnings in the server log while players perform normal activities. A quiet spawn area can hide problems that appear when two people fly in opposite directions and force simultaneous world generation. Test the busiest scenario you expect, then leave headroom rather than operating continuously at the limit.
Keep thermals and storage stable
Use active cooling throughout the test, keep the board ventilated, and avoid placing it where heat accumulates. Put worlds and backups on reliable storage, retain multiple backup points, and schedule backups so they do not coincide with the busiest play period.

Networking and reliability before inviting friends
Ethernet is preferable for a stable local connection. Wi-Fi may work, but a wired link removes one variable when diagnosing lag. Separate connection problems from server-tick problems: a smooth local session with delayed remote joins can indicate networking, while delayed actions for everyone point toward server load.
- Use a fixed, known server address on your home network.
- Restrict access to the players you intend to host and expose only the service you understand.
- Schedule automatic world backups and keep copies on storage separate from the live world.
- Enable restart monitoring so a crash does not require someone to reach the Pi physically.
- Apply operating-system and loader updates during a planned maintenance window, then test the pack before reopening access.
Common failure modes and fixes
The server exits immediately
Check the Java major version and architecture first. A 32-bit JVM is unsupported; a 1.20.5-or-newer pack generally needs Java 21, while 1.17–1.20.4 uses Java 17 under the cited loader guidance. Read the first clear error in the startup log rather than repeatedly launching the same command.
Mods refuse to load
Confirm that every file targets the same Minecraft version and loader. A Fabric mod will not become a NeoForge mod by copying it into another directory. For Fabric, verify that the required Fabric API is present and matches the environment.
Players report lag during exploration
Reproduce the issue while watching tick times, then reduce simultaneous exploration, lower simulation distance, or pre-generate a limited region. Check temperatures and storage activity at the same time; world generation, thermal throttling, and backup jobs can overlap.
The Pi becomes unstable overnight
Verify the USB-C supply, inspect cooling and ventilation, check free storage, and review restart logs. A scheduled backup and a tested recovery copy protect the world while you diagnose the underlying cause.

Compare alternatives against the workload rather than the device label. A mini PC or hosted server becomes more attractive when you need substantially higher single-thread CPU performance, more memory after operating-system overhead, faster or easier storage and backups, many concurrent players, or a large modpack with constant world generation. Also account for electricity, noise, 24/7 operating cost, and how much maintenance you want to perform yourself.
If your group is small, the pack is tested, and you are comfortable tuning memory, cooling, backups, and distance settings, a Pi 5 can be an economical always-on server. If those conditions are not true, plan for a more capable platform before the world becomes dependent on it.
Bottom line
A Raspberry Pi 5 can run a modded Minecraft Java server successfully with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, the correct Java release, a compatible Fabric or NeoForge installation, active cooling, and conservative expectations. Start with an 8GB board, test the exact pack under realistic exploration, monitor tick behavior, and automate backups and restarts. That approach makes the Pi a practical small-group server while leaving a clear upgrade path when the modpack or player count outgrows it.
