Yes. GitHub Pages can host a blog built from static files in a repository, with Jekyll supported by default for branch-based publishing and other static-site generators available through a custom GitHub Actions workflow. It suits writers comfortable editing files and maintaining a build process; it is a poor fit if you need a conventional browser-based post editor or server-side application features.
How blogging on GitHub Pages works
GitHub Pages publishes HTML, CSS, and JavaScript from a repository, either directly or after a build. You can publish from a branch and folder or configure a custom GitHub Actions workflow. With branch-source publishing, Jekyll is the default generator; other generators require a custom workflow that you configure and maintain. GitHub describes the process in its Pages site creation documentation.
This is a file-and-repository workflow, not a hosted content-management system with a built-in visual dashboard for drafting and publishing posts. You manage posts and site settings as files, and changes move through the repository’s publishing process. Writers already comfortable with Git may find that natural; those who expect a point-and-click editor may find it cumbersome.
What are the advantages?
Hosting and source live in one place
Your site’s source files and publishing destination are associated with a GitHub repository. Routine updates can follow the same repository workflow as other project files, rather than requiring a separate hosting control panel.

Jekyll has built-in support
GitHub documents Jekyll as its integrated static-site generator, with support for Markdown and Liquid. For deployment, GitHub recommends GitHub Actions. See GitHub’s Jekyll documentation.
You can use another static-site generator
You are not limited to Jekyll: a custom Actions workflow can build a site with another generator and publish its static output. That flexibility comes with an operational cost—you need to configure and maintain the build and deployment workflow. GitHub’s setup documentation explains the publishing options.

Custom domains are supported
GitHub Pages supports apex domains, such as example.com, and subdomains, such as www.example.com. GitHub recommends verifying ownership of a domain before connecting it to reduce the risk of a domain takeover, and recommends using www alongside an apex domain. Its custom-domain guide covers the setup.

It serves static output, not server-side applications
GitHub Pages does not run server-side languages such as PHP, Ruby, or Python. A blog that needs server-side application logic or a conventional dynamic CMS therefore needs a different architecture or additional services. Pages can publish a static front end, but it is not a general-purpose application host.

Writing and deployment are repository-oriented
Posts and configuration are files, and custom build behavior means maintaining a workflow. That can provide control to a technical author, but it places more setup and ongoing responsibility on the writer than a managed publishing interface. The tradeoff follows from the documented workflow; it is not a measured usability comparison.
GitHub publishes usage limits
GitHub’s Pages limits documentation lists these service limits and recommendations. They are not a guarantee of capacity:

- Deployment time: A deployment times out after 10 minutes.
- Bandwidth: The soft monthly limit is 100 GB.
- Build frequency: The soft limit is 10 builds per hour. This hourly limit does not apply when a custom GitHub Actions workflow builds and publishes the site.
These figures describe GitHub’s published Pages limits, not independent performance benchmarks. Consider your expected site size, update cadence, and traffic when deciding whether the service is suitable.
Commercial use has a policy boundary
GitHub’s limits documentation says Pages is not intended as free web hosting for a site primarily directed at facilitating commercial transactions or providing commercial software as a service. A blog can discuss commercial subjects; the policy statement is narrower than a blanket ban on commercially related writing. Review the current GitHub Pages limits and policy against your site’s actual purpose.

Custom domains require DNS work
Connecting a domain means configuring DNS as well as the Pages settings. GitHub’s guidance specifies CNAME records for subdomains and A, ALIAS, or ANAME records for apex domains. Domain ownership verification is also part of its recommended risk reduction. See the GitHub custom-domain documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide whether Pages fits your blog
Compare the workflow and requirements that matter to your site rather than assuming one platform is best for every writer:
| Decision area | GitHub Pages means | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Writing and editing | Posts and configuration are managed as repository files. | Choose this if file-based authoring works for you; consider a managed publishing interface if you need a visual editor. |
| Build and deployment | You can publish from a branch and folder or configure a custom Actions workflow. | Decide how much control you want, and whether you are prepared to maintain a custom build process. |
| Required functionality | The published site is static; server-side PHP, Ruby, and Python are not supported. | List any server-side or platform-managed features your blog depends on before choosing. |
| Limits and policy | GitHub publishes repository, site-size, deployment-time, bandwidth, and build-frequency limits, plus a commercial-use restriction. | Check the current documentation against your expected traffic, update frequency, and business model. |
| Domain and operations | Custom domains are supported, with DNS configuration and ownership verification to handle. | Account for DNS setup and ongoing deployment responsibility. |
Other hosting and publishing approaches emphasize different benefits. For example, Netlify’s comparison page markets deploy previews, updates, and rollbacks as reasons to choose its static hosting; those are the vendor’s claims, not an independent performance comparison. Ghost’s comparison page describes a broader publishing product with writing and publishing functions, and is likewise vendor-authored. Use such comparisons to identify features to investigate, not as neutral proof that one option is superior.
Does GitHub Pages improve a blog’s SEO?
The available evidence here does not establish that blogs on GitHub Pages are indexed or rank better than blogs on other platforms. Choose Pages for its workflow and technical fit, not on a promise of improved search rankings.
