Yes—sometimes. An existing diesel generator can often be fitted with an EPA-verified diesel particulate filter (DPF) or diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), but there is no universal bolt-on filter. Each retrofit is verified for particular engine families, configurations, model years, exhaust-flow ranges and operating conditions. A supplier or qualified installer must confirm that your generator matches the device’s verified coverage before anyone orders or installs it.
What an emissions retrofit does
A retrofit adds exhaust after-treatment to a certified diesel engine that is already in service. The engine remains in place; the added device treats pollutants in the exhaust before they leave the stack. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) describes retrofit technologies as products that may be added to further reduce emissions from certified engine configurations.
The most common choices for generators are a diesel particulate filter, which captures soot and other particulate matter (PM), and a diesel oxidation catalyst, which chemically oxidizes hydrocarbons (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO). Some systems combine catalyst functions with a particulate filter or add an active regeneration system.
Verification matters because the filter changes exhaust backpressure, temperature and maintenance requirements. EPA states that a device is expected to achieve its verified performance and durability only when it is installed as described on the verified technologies list and within the stated scope of coverage. A generic filter selected by pipe diameter alone can fail to regenerate, overload with ash, create excessive backpressure or fall outside the engine’s emissions approval.

A DPF is the usual choice when the goal is a substantial reduction in visible smoke or PM. A DOC can be more suitable when HC and CO are the principal concern and the generator’s operating pattern cannot support DPF regeneration. The decision should be based on the verified application, not on a device’s advertised reduction percentage in isolation.
How much pollution can a verified retrofit remove?
EPA verification results illustrate what a matched system can achieve. They are not guarantees for every generator, because the figures apply only to the named technology under its stated baseline, test criteria and coverage.

These numbers describe verified performance of specific systems, not a universal generator result. Real-world reductions depend on the engine’s original emissions, load profile, exhaust temperature, fuel and oil, installation quality and maintenance.
Compatibility checks to complete before buying anything
Collect the following information from the generator nameplate, engine documentation and operating records. A verified supplier will use it to determine whether a listed retrofit covers your application.

- Generator and engine manufacturer, exact model and model year.
- Engine displacement, rated horsepower, turbocharger and exhaust-gas-recirculation (EGR) configuration.
- EPA engine-family name and certification information.
- Whether the installation is classified as a stationary or non-road application, and any local classification that affects permitting.
- Annual operating hours, typical load and duty cycle, including long periods at light load or idling.
- Exhaust flow and a measured or logged exhaust-temperature profile across the actual operating range.
- Engine-out PM, visible smoke or opacity, fuel sulfur level and lubrication-oil consumption.
- Available space, pipe dimensions, stack arrangement and the exhaust system’s allowable backpressure.
Do not infer compatibility from horsepower alone. Two engines with the same rating can have different combustion systems, engine families, exhaust temperatures and verified retrofit options.
Step-by-step retrofit process
- Identify the exact engine. Photograph the engine and generator nameplates, record the serial numbers and obtain the engine-family designation from the certification label or manufacturer documentation.
- Characterize operation. Record annual hours, normal and emergency duty, load percentage, start-stop frequency and the amount of time spent at low load. Log exhaust temperature during representative runs; data logging is commonly required for DPF selection.
- Check engine health. Correct injector, turbocharger, EGR, compression, oil-control and maintenance problems first. Inspect for excessive smoke, high oil consumption, leaks and damaged exhaust components. A filter cannot compensate for an engine that is producing abnormal soot or oil ash.
- Confirm fuel and oil. Verify that the fuel meets the retrofit’s sulfur requirement and that the lubricant is the specified low-ash formulation. Keep records of fuel and oil use because both affect filter loading.
- Search the verified lists. Check the EPA verified technologies list and, where applicable, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) verified list. The listing must explicitly include the engine family, model-year range, application type, horsepower or displacement range and operating conditions.
- Obtain an application assessment. Ask the verified supplier or qualified installer to calculate exhaust flow, expected temperature, pressure drop, mounting requirements and regeneration method. Have the supplier identify every condition that would invalidate the verification.
- Install and instrument the system. Mount the device in the approved orientation and location, use the specified sensors and insulation, and install a backpressure monitor or alarm when the verified instructions require one. Preserve required clearances from combustible materials and provide safe access for inspection and cleaning.
- Document commissioning. Record pre-installation emissions or opacity observations, backpressure, temperatures and engine condition. After installation, repeat the checks, verify alarms and controls, and retain the supplier’s installation and verification documents.
Does a generator DPF need regeneration?
Usually, yes. A DPF stores soot until it is oxidized during regeneration. Passive regeneration relies on the exhaust reaching an adequate temperature for the specific filter and catalyst. Standby generators often run briefly, at varying loads or below the temperature needed for passive regeneration, so their duty cycle can be the central compatibility issue.
An approved active system supplies additional heat or uses another controlled method to regenerate the filter when normal exhaust conditions are insufficient. Active regeneration adds controls, sensors, fuel or electrical demand and operating procedures. It must be part of the verified configuration; adding an improvised heater or dosing system can change the emissions and safety characteristics of the installation.

Fuel, oil and cleaning requirements
Use the ultra-low-sulfur fuel and low-ash oil required by the verified technology and engine manufacturer. Sulfur can interfere with catalyst performance, while lubricant ash remains in the filter after soot is burned. Oil consumption that is normal for an old engine can still shorten the interval between cleanings.
Filter maintenance normally includes tracking differential pressure or backpressure, checking temperature and regeneration history, inspecting for damage and removing accumulated ash at the specified interval. Cleaning frequency is not universal: it depends on engine-out PM, oil consumption, hours, duty cycle and the particular filter. Keep dated records of cleanings, alarms, pressure readings, fuel and oil changes, and any regeneration fault.
Special considerations for standby and emergency generators
A standby genset may sit unused for long periods and then run at high load during an outage. That pattern can produce too little heat during routine testing for passive regeneration, followed by rapid soot loading during an extended event. Conversely, a lightly loaded generator that runs frequently can accumulate soot without reaching the conditions needed to burn it.

Confirm that regeneration can occur without violating the emergency operating procedure or exposing occupants to additional heat. If the duty cycle cannot meet the DPF’s requirements, the supplier may identify a verified active-regeneration configuration or a DOC-based approach instead.

Backpressure, safety and installation risks
Every after-treatment device adds some restriction. Excessive backpressure can reduce engine performance, increase exhaust temperature and damage the engine or turbocharger. The verified installation instructions define the allowable pressure and the monitoring method. A pressure alarm should be connected and tested when required, with a clear response procedure for operators.
The housing and regeneration process can become very hot. Provide the specified thermal insulation, guards, ventilation and clearance from wiring, fuel, oil, walls and other combustible materials. Review condensate drainage, rain protection, stack support and access for ash removal. Never bypass a temperature, pressure or regeneration interlock to keep the generator running.

Adding a filter does not automatically cancel an emissions permit, and it does not automatically satisfy every local requirement. Stationary-source permits, emergency-generator limits, reporting duties, noise rules and ventilation or fire-code requirements are set by the relevant jurisdiction. Ask the air-quality authority or permit professional whether the modification requires prior approval, a revised permit condition, notification or post-installation testing.

For warranty protection, involve the engine manufacturer or an authorized service organization before modifying the exhaust. Use the verified parts, sensors and software specified for the system, and keep the approval, installation and maintenance records. A device that is technically functional but outside the engine maker’s approved configuration can create a warranty dispute.

What a retrofit costs and how long it lasts
There is no reliable single retrofit price, service-life figure or payback period for all generators. Cost depends on engine size, exhaust layout, the need for active regeneration, sensors and controls, structural and thermal work, permitting, commissioning and future cleaning. Service life depends on soot and ash loading, oil consumption, duty cycle, regeneration quality and maintenance.
Request a written quotation that separates the device, engineering, installation, controls, monitoring, permit support, commissioning, scheduled cleaning and warranty. Have the supplier state which assumptions could change the price, such as a failed engine-health check or an exhaust-temperature profile outside the expected range.
Troubleshooting common retrofit problems
- Frequent regeneration or rising backpressure: Check for low-load operation, restricted exhaust, excessive engine-out soot, high oil consumption, failed temperature sensors or an overdue ash cleaning. Stop and investigate before the pressure exceeds the verified limit.
- Filter never reaches regeneration conditions: Compare logged temperatures and load with the verified operating window. A standby schedule may need an approved active-regeneration strategy or a different verified technology.
- Unexpected smoke after installation: Inspect the engine, injectors, turbocharger, EGR system and exhaust joints. A DPF can hide symptoms temporarily, but it cannot correct an underlying combustion or oil-control fault.
- Alarm immediately after commissioning: Confirm sensor orientation, wiring, calibration, pressure taps and the device’s flow direction. Do not suppress the alarm without identifying the cause.
- Permit or inspection conflict: Provide the regulator with the exact verified technology, engine-family coverage, installation records and monitoring plan; local approval may still be required even when EPA verification exists.
When a retrofit is the right decision
A retrofit is a strong candidate when the engine is healthy, the application is covered by an EPA or CARB verification, the duty cycle supports regeneration (or an approved active system is available), and the owner can provide the required fuel, oil, monitoring and cleaning. It is a poor candidate when the engine family is not covered, exhaust temperatures cannot meet the verified window, backpressure limits cannot be maintained, or local rules prohibit the proposed configuration.
The practical next step is an application assessment with the generator’s identification data, operating logs and exhaust-temperature measurements. That assessment—not a universal product label—determines whether an emissions filter can be installed legally, safely and effectively on the existing generator.
