Usually, yes—you can pass on the physical disc or cartridge after redeeming a separate digital bonus, but the bonus normally stays with the account that claimed it. A buyer should not be promised a fresh code or access to account-linked content unless you have verified that it is unused and transferable. Whether the physical game itself may be resold or lent depends on the platform’s terms, the publisher, the edition, and the law where you live.
Before listing the game, identify exactly what is on the disc or cartridge, what was supplied as a one-time code, and which digital entitlements are attached to your account.

Why the disc and the digital bonus are different things
A boxed game can contain several distinct rights and items:
- Physical media: the disc or cartridge you hand to another person.
- Game software license: the permission to use the software, governed by platform and publisher terms.
- One-time code: a printed voucher for downloadable content, a season pass, currency, a soundtrack, or another promotion.
- Account-linked entitlement: content recorded against the account that redeemed it.
Redeeming a code normally changes the third and fourth items, not the physical object. The code is consumed, and the resulting entitlement is associated with the redeeming account. Handing over the disc does not normally move that entitlement to the recipient.

Microsoft’s official Digital Goods Rules describe digital goods as “licensed, not sold.” Xbox code support likewise explains that a code is redeemed to a Microsoft account. Those statements explain why a redeemed bonus should be treated as yours alone unless the specific terms say otherwise; they do not create a universal rule for every physical game or country.
Identify how this edition delivers its bonus
Check the package, insert, and the publisher’s product page for the exact edition. The delivery method determines what a buyer can realistically receive.
| Bonus format | What happens after redemption | What a buyer can expect from a used copy |
|---|---|---|
| Separate printed or emailed code | The first successful redemption consumes the code and links the content to an account. | The physical game may still work, but the code is unavailable once redeemed. An unused code is only useful if it matches the buyer’s platform and region and has not expired. |
| Content included on the disc or cartridge | The data is already on the physical media; access may still be controlled by the game or platform license. | The content may be present, but do not assume every included feature is transferable or usable without an account, update, or online service. |
| Automatic account entitlement | The platform records the bonus directly on the account that claimed or purchased it. | The buyer receives no entitlement unless the terms expressly provide a transfer mechanism. Never offer your account as part of the sale. |
| Boxed code-only product | There may be no playable physical game at all; the package is merely a key or voucher. | If the key has been redeemed, the buyer generally receives nothing. Describe it as used and do not market it as a complete game. |
The exact title and edition are not specified here, so the bonus status cannot be determined from the game’s name alone. “Deluxe,” “special,” and regional editions can contain different items.

Xbox and Microsoft accounts
Xbox download codes are redeemed to a Microsoft account. Once the code is accepted, the associated content is normally available through that account rather than transferable with a disc. Microsoft’s rules also distinguish ordinary digital goods from special disc-to-digital arrangements; a rule written for one arrangement should not be applied to every Xbox title.
For a used Xbox listing, say whether the code was redeemed, and do not imply that the recipient will receive the digital item. If a physical game requires the disc to continue qualifying for a particular digital benefit, the buyer should retain the disc and verify the title-specific conditions.
Nintendo systems
Nintendo support states that a code reporting as already used has been redeemed. Its troubleshooting guidance directs the account holder to check eShop purchase history; if the content appears there, the code has been claimed. Nintendo also warns that download codes are region-sensitive. A code that works in one country may fail on an account set to another region.
Accordingly, an already-used Nintendo code is not a bonus for the next owner. An unused code still needs a matching region and any required platform or account eligibility.

PlayStation systems
PlayStation publishes separate terms by region. The US terms describe Store purchases as personal-use licenses that are generally not transferable and treat physical purchases under separate terms. The UK Software Usage Terms specifically address disc-based software and state that resale requires express authorisation, including from the publisher when it is a separate company.
Those are region-specific examples, not a worldwide rule. Check the current terms for the buyer’s and seller’s region, the console generation, and the publisher’s license before making a broad claim that resale is permitted.
When resale, lending, and sharing are different
| Action | What changes hands | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Sell the disc or cartridge | A physical object, subject to applicable platform, publisher, and local rules. | The buyer may assume the redeemed bonus is included unless the listing clearly excludes it. |
| Lend the physical game | Temporary possession of the media. | The borrower cannot normally use an account-linked bonus redeemed by the owner. |
| Give an unused code separately | A potentially transferable voucher, if its terms allow it. | Region mismatch, expiration, prior redemption, or edition restrictions can make it unusable. |
| Share or hand over your account | Credentials and access to a personal account. | This can violate account rules and expose purchases, payment details, saved data, and security controls. Do not include an account in a game sale. |
“Sharing the game” therefore needs clarification. Lending a cartridge is not the same as sharing the digital entitlement, and neither requires giving another person your platform credentials.
Seller’s step-by-step checklist
- Confirm the physical format. Verify that you have a disc or cartridge, not a box containing only a code. Photograph the platform label and the edition name.
- Record the region. Note the country or rating mark on the package and the region of the console for which the game was sold. Region rules can apply to both codes and downloadable content.
- Inventory every included item. Check inserts, scratch-off panels, promotional cards, maps, manuals, and any separate download voucher.
- Check redemption status. If you redeemed the code, remove it from the advertised contents. If you are unsure, treat it as unavailable rather than promising a working bonus.
- Separate on-disc content from account content. A feature present on the media may still require an update, online service, or license. An item shown in your account’s purchase or download history is not automatically transferred with the disc.
- Read the current terms. Check the platform’s software or digital-goods terms, the publisher’s end-user license, and any region-specific resale language. Terms can change, so use the version in force when you list the item.
- Write an exact listing. State platform, edition, region, condition, included physical items, and whether the bonus code is unused, redeemed, missing, expired, or unverified.
- Remove personal data. Delete local save data, sign out of the console, and never provide your account, recovery codes, or payment information.
How to describe the copy accurately
When the code was redeemed
Use wording such as: “Physical disc only. The promotional download code has been redeemed and is not included. The disc and case are included as pictured.” This tells the buyer exactly what is and is not being sold without claiming that the digital item transfers.

When the code is unused and verified
Say: “Includes an unused code for the [named bonus], for the [platform] region shown on the package. The buyer should confirm regional and expiration requirements.” Do not call a code “guaranteed” if you have not checked its status or terms.
When the status is unknown
Do not advertise the bonus as included. A safer description is: “Code status unknown; no value assigned to the code. Sale includes the physical game only.” This avoids turning an uncertain voucher into a dispute.
Do not write “complete edition” when an account-bound bonus is absent, and do not use a photograph of a code to suggest availability if the code has already been revealed or redeemed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What buyers should ask before paying
- What is the exact platform, region, and edition?
- Is the game on a disc or cartridge, or is this a code-only package?
- Was every printed download code redeemed, including season-pass or promotional cards?
- If a code is claimed to be unused, can the seller show the unopened voucher without exposing the code?
- Does the physical copy require an online account, an update, or a service that may no longer be available?
- Are the buyer’s console region and account region compatible with the game and any code?
If the seller cannot answer the code-status question, value the purchase as a physical game without the bonus. A marketplace dispute is harder to resolve when the listing used vague terms such as “all DLC included.”
Checking a code without creating a second problem
Do not test a code by redeeming it to the wrong account or region. Redemption is normally irreversible, and the resulting entitlement may become tied to the tester’s account. Ask the platform’s support service about status checks when available, and keep the voucher concealed until the transaction is settled.
On Nintendo, the official support path is to review the eShop purchase history when a code reports as used. That confirms redemption for the account holder; it does not make the entitlement transferable. Similar account-history checks on other platforms can show ownership without providing a way to move the license.
Legal and contractual limits you should not ignore
Physical resale rights are not identical everywhere. A platform may distinguish a physical purchase from a digital Store license, and a publisher may impose additional conditions. The PlayStation UK terms’ express-authorisation language illustrates why a seller in the UK should not assume that a general second-hand market practice overrides the current software terms. The PlayStation US terms illustrate a different distinction between physical goods and personal digital licenses.
These documents are contractual examples, not legal advice for every jurisdiction. Local consumer, copyright, and contract rules may affect a private sale differently from a commercial resale business. If you are selling at scale or dealing with a disputed restriction, obtain advice for your jurisdiction rather than relying on a platform rule from another country.

- Listing a used code as included: Edit the listing immediately and state that the code was redeemed.
- Assuming “on disc” means “transferable”: Verify whether the feature still requires an account, online activation, or a separate license.
- Ignoring region: Match the package, console, account, and code region before promising compatibility.
- Giving away an account: Cancel the arrangement, change credentials, enable two-factor authentication, and contact platform support if access was disclosed.
- Relying on an old edition description: Recheck the current publisher and platform terms for the exact release and country.
Practical decision rule
You can make a responsible listing when all four answers are clear:
- The item is identified as a disc, cartridge, or code-only package.
- The bonus is classified as on-media, unused code, redeemed code, or account-linked entitlement.
- The platform, publisher, edition, region, and applicable terms have been checked.
- The listing promises only what the recipient can actually receive.
If any answer is missing, sell or lend it as a physical copy without the bonus and disclose the uncertainty. That approach protects the buyer from paying for a benefit that remains attached to your account and protects the seller from making a misleading claim.
Bottom line
Redeeming a separate digital bonus usually does not physically invalidate the disc or cartridge, but it normally consumes the code and keeps the resulting entitlement on the redeeming account. Resale or lending of the physical game depends on the specific platform, publisher, edition, region, and local law. Check those terms, never transfer your account, and describe a redeemed or uncertain bonus as unavailable.
